10 Cool (and Easy) Buns That Work for Short Hair

As a girl with bob-length hair, I understand the frustration of waking up late and wanting nothing more than to toss your hair up in a messy bun, only to find yourself unable to do so because you don’t have enough hair to do so. Please do not misunderstand me. I really enjoy having short hair. However, the messy-bun existence is one that I occasionally yearn for. There is some bad news, though, in that buns with short hair aren’t nearly as straightforward as they are for people who have 12 inches of hair to play around with.

In fact, it’s more than probable that this will happen.

For all of my short-haired sisters out there, this one is for you.

On the days when you don’t feel like pulling out your curling iron or straightening iron, simply refer to this list for inspiration.

Braided Topknot

Getty 1.Distribute a dry texture spray, such as Obrie’sDry Texturizing Spray($22), evenly throughout hair to provide more grip. 2.Pull your hair into a super-high ponytail and tie it with an elastic band. Don’t be concerned about making things seem nice! 3.Pull the ponytail all the way down and secure it with a clear elastic band at the bottom. Using a bobby pin, bind the braid around itself, starting at the base and working your way up the length. 5.After the braid has been coiled all the way up into a bun, fasten it with a couple more bobby pins to finish it off.

7.Spray your hair with a flexible-hold hairspray.

8.

Sporty Space Buns

Getty1.Space buns are all the rage this summer, and now it’s your opportunity to show off your own style. To finish, part your hair down the center and spray all over with Rusk’sTexture Dry Finishing Spray ($25). 2.Pull the hair from either side of your head into a high, tight ponytail on one side. Wrap each ponytail around itself and tie it with a couple of bobby pins to finish the look. 4.The more muddled, the better! Pull each bun outward to add volume, then pull out a few loose strands to frame your face with a few loose strands.

Boho Double Knot

Image courtesy of Getty1. A dry shampoo, such as Living Proof’sPerfect Hair Day (PhD) Dry Shampoo ($25), or a greattexture spray is the key to this casual summer style. Spray evenly from the middle of the shaft to the ends. 2.Split your hair into four equal portions, two on either side of the front and two on either side of the back, and pin them up in a high ponytail. 3.Take a portion from the rear of the bun and coil it around the base to form a bun shape. Bobby pins can be used to keep the hair in place.

You should be left with two areas that have not been touched up front.

Pick up one front piece and pull it toward the rear bun, allowing the section to hang down and drape over your ear. Roll the tail of the front piece over the rear bun and secure it with a safety pin. 6.Repeat the process on the opposite side. Take a few face-framing items and you’re ready to go! 7.

Bedhead Bun

Getty1.Have you not heard the news? Compared to the topknot of yesteryear, the low bunis is incomparably cooler and colder to wear. To create the desired effect, softly back-comb the hair at the top of your head to give it lift. Make a loose, sloppy ponytail at the back of your neck and tie it off with an elastic band. Simply hold it in place for the time being; do not bind it with an elastic. (3) Twist the ponytail around itself using your other hand to form a bun shape, and fasten with pins.

Messy Half-Knot

Getty1.For short-haired girls, this is the ultimate bun to achieve. Begin with strands that have not been washed. It doesn’t matter how filthy the environment is. Using your hair, create two sections on either side of your crown. Keep the components as straight as possible because they will be apparent in the final product. 3.Make a high ponytail out of the hair between the two pieces and place it exactly on top of your head. Make sure not to drag the ponytail through the elastic on the final loop; otherwise, you’ll end up with a loose bun.

Instead of leaving the ends sticking out the bottom of the bun, just wrap them around the base of the bun and pin them in place!

Modern Milkmaid Bun

Getty1. Although this is more of an updo than a classic bun, it still serves the purpose of keeping your hair out of your face in a stylish manner. Begin by splitting your hair down the center and dividing it into two equal parts with your fingers. To give your hair near the crown of your head a little additional volume, back-comb it a few times. 3) Create a French braid on one side of your head, starting near to your face and working your way out to form a braided pigtail. 4. Clear elastic is used to keep it in place.

Using a bobby pin, pin the end of the first French braid behind your head to keep it in place.

7.Spray the braid with a medium-hold hair spray, such as L’Oréal Tecni, to keep it in place.

Classic Ballet Bun

This laidback variation on the traditional ballerina bun is polished and easy, as shown in the image above by Getty1. In order to begin, pull your hair back into a ponytail at the very top of your head. In the event that you have shorter pieces that fall out, pin them up at the back of your head with a bobby pin. Secondly, open the elastic and draw the hair up halfway through to form a loop to give the topknot a larger appearance. 3.Take the excess length that was left over from the loop and coil it around the base of the loop to conceal the elastic band.

Sleek Low Bun

Getty1.A slicked-back hairstyle that screams “cool chick” will have you looking as effortlessly elegant as Rihanna. This is one of the few occasions in which Rihanna wore her natural, blown-out hair without the use of extensions. Before you begin, smooth your hair back into a bun with a boar bristle brush, such as the DenmanBoar Bristle Ceramic Brush ($26). Secondly, let some of your flyaways and sideburns to dangle loosely. Don’t be concerned with everything being in exactly the right position.

3.Pull your hair back into a ponytail with the help of an elastic. Make a coiled, twisted ponytail out of the ends of your hair. Take a second elastic band and wrap it around your topknot to secure it.

Embellished Top Knot

Getty1. Hair ornaments are timeless and will never go out of style. Furthermore, they quickly transform any bun from plain to badass. Take inspiration from Issa Rae’s Black Panthermoviepremiere performance. Begin by parting your hair into three sections in the center of your head with a rattail comb, such as Krest’sPintail Combs ($5). 2.After that, braid three little cornrows and tie them together at the crown of your head or wherever you want your bun to end up. 3.Put your hair and the ends of your three braids into a ponytail and secure it with an elastic band.

Using circular motions, wrap your braid around the rest of your hair to form a braided topknot.

6.

Install gold cuffs throughout your braid to give it a little extra flair.

Backwards Braided Bun

Getty1.If you have piecey bangs and want to style them in a lob or bob, this is the style for you. Allow your bangs to hang loosely in the front and frame your face in the back. Begin by dividing your hair into three medium-sized portions at the back of your head. 2.In the back of your head, braid three medium-sized cornrows, halting at the crown of your head and braiding in the direction of your ponytail. 3.After that, pull your hair into a ponytail. Using a rubber band or a hair tie, pull your braids into a ponytail once you’ve completed braiding them.

Don’t be concerned about further flyaways.

How To Make A Bun – Easy Step by Step Tutorial – Your Daily Dance

For the majority of dance parents, there comes a period in their daughter’s dancing career when they will tie her hair up in a bun. The reason for this may be for a recital, a requirement for a lesson, or a performance, or she may simply enjoy the way it looks – like an official ballerina – and request that her hair be pulled back. When I remember back to when I attempted to make a bun out of my dancer’s hair when she was younger, I have to giggle. While a bun was not required for the performance, I like the appearance and would attempt to give the impression that she had much more hair and, consequently, a much bigger bun than she actually had by styling her hair in a bun.

But unless I wanted her thin hair to seem like it was the size of a donut hole on the top of her head, we were going to need some professional assistance.

When I started looking for information on how to build a bun, I came upon the right product for us — the hair doughnut.

Watch the video below to see how we combine the hair donut into a bun that is suitable for dancing class, school or any performance situation. The lesson below may also be useful for dancers with thicker hair who do not need to use a bun doughnut but still want to look stylish.

How To Make A Braided Bun – Quick Tutorial

What we used were the following products: a hair donut (donut brush), a comb (comb), gel (gel), clear elastic hairbands, hair pins, and Bobby pins

Step 1: Add Gel To Hair:

This is a new gel for us, and we were excited to give it a try. Would love to know if you have a favorite styling gel that you use to keep your hair up. In the aftermath of this, we were going out to dinner, and she did not want her hair to be slicked down in the way that we would normally do for a performance or dance competition. When it comes to flyaways, I prefer to apply gel more thickly to the front, sides, and below the hair in the back to help avoid them.

Step 2: Put Hair Up Into Ponytail

Hair should be pulled back into a ponytail depending on the sort of bun you want. A high ponytail is required for a high bun, a bun that is straight back is required for a straight back bun, and a low bun is required for a low bun. Because my dancer favors a high bun, we will be showcasing it in this tutorial. I use transparent elastic bands that I purchased from Sally’s Beauty Supply to hold her ponytail in place. Even though they are affordable and durable, I just use them once and then throw them at the end of each day during competition season.

Step 3:Pull Ponytail Through Hair Donut

The ponytail should be able to slide up through the middle of the hole in the hairdonut.

Step 4:Let Hair Fall and Cover Hair Donut

Adjust the angle of your dancer’s head forward and draw the ponytail straight up, allowing the hair to fall over the doughnut and cover it completely on all sides. When purchasing a hair donut, be sure to get one that is as near to the color of your dancer’s hair as possible so that it will integrate seamlessly even if it is not totally covered.

Step 5:Cover The Hair and Donut with an Elastic Hair Band

Adjust the angle of your dancer’s head forward and draw the ponytail straight up, allowing the hair to fall over the doughnut and cover it on all four corners. It’s important to purchase a hair donut that is as similar to the color of your dancer’s hair as possible so that it will blend in smoothly if it is not fully covered.

Step 6:Cover With a Hair Net

When I’m done, I wrap the leftover netting around the bun and fasten the end with bobby pins to keep everything in place.

Step 7:Add Hairpins to Secure the Bun

Hairpins should be inserted into the hair and secured with a doughnut. On most occasions, I enter the pin in a downward motion and then raise it back up again. This method appears to be more effective than simply inserting the hairpin straight into the bun.

The Finished Product – Spray with hairspray and your dancer will be performance ready!

Do you have a favorite hair product that you like to use while styling the hair of your dancer?

Fortunately, there are several options. The sloppy bun is the topic of discussion today, and you guessed it right! Make a commitment to join us in our search for innovative methods to arrange your hair in a bun that is everything from usual.

Messy Bun Ideas

A bun updo is nothing new, but each of the hairstyles in this collection has a unique shine that will make you take a second look and like them even more.

1: Fringed Donut Style

This one is at the top of our list of the most adorable messy buns. After all, it’s a winning combination: doughnut meets sloppy meets fringes, and it’s just as simple to make as it appears to be. All you have to do is gently curl and twist little strands of hair with your fingers as you go to get this look. It also looks well with short bangs.

2: Not-So-Messy Bun

Uptight and disorganized are not mutually exclusive as your employer would have you think. This bun will allow you to have the best of both worlds, which is especially beneficial if you have curly locks. Learning how to do a sloppy bun and making it less messy as you go will be essential skills. The final outcome is credible enough to be presented at a board meeting.

3: Peony Blossom Updo

With this untidy bun, you may transform the rear of your head into a blossoming vase. It all starts with a low ponytail, some bobby pins, and a few little lengths of hair wrapped together. When hair fixators arrive, your hair will be able to bloom from day to night without a care.

4: Curly Pastel Purple Bun

With this messy bun, you can transform the back of your head into a thriving vase. A low ponytail, a few looped lengths of hair, and a few bobby pins serve as the foundation for this look. And then you’ll have hair fixators to help your hair look its best from morning till night.

5: Low Bun with Medieval Braid

Braids and buns have been around for quite some time; this hairstyle is inspired by a hairstyle that was popular back in the day when a tutorial was hard to come by. You will find that it is far less complicated than it appears, especially if you remember that the braid is only meant to be cosmetic and should be the final thing you do. Just before completing, tuck the tip of the braid into the low bun that you created earlier.

6: Messy Bun with Embellishment

This sweeping style with a flower is one of many variations on the sloppy bun, but none is quite as adorable as this one. You may accessorize your final appearance with a number of accessories such as barrettes, diamonds, flowers, butterflies, and ribbons to make it a little more fancy.

7: Side Braid Into Bun

If you have unruly hair that you like to keep long despite the drama, you should try this hairstyle on for length. Starting with a side braid, wrap the hair over the back of the head and twist the remaining hair into a low bun for finishing. Hair elastics and bobby pins can be used to keep it in place. What is the most appealing aspect of this style? You have the option of allowing some tendrils and natural strands to freely flow.

8: Crowned with a Colored Bun

Hair color may be used for a variety of objectives, but none are as entertaining as creating a fashion statement with it. When you’re ready to experiment with a completely different look, dye the bottom area of your hair a vibrant color while leaving the roots natural. When you tie your hair into a high bun, twist it in the appropriate direction to show off the color.

9: Double Braid Messy Bun

Long-haired ladies are well aware of the necessity of having a variety of messy bun hairstyles on hand for those days when your mane is refusing to cooperate with your style.

This attractive and somewhat complicated style is suitable for all seasons and can be worn with a range of hair textures.

10: Tucked Chignon

Thischignon hairstyle is basic and sweet, and it’s simple to try. Begin by combing all of your hair back in a straight line, then backcomb it vigorously. Using your fingers, gather your hair into a low ponytail and then criss cross and twist portions of it to create a sloppy knot. Using bobby pins, secure each area of hair until the hair elastic is completely covered. When your hair is moist, this style is a little simpler to do. Additionally, air dried hair has a naturally playful and disheveled look to it.

11: Business Bun

Whether you work from home or in an office, you’ll need a go-to style that isn’t overly intricate while yet exuding elegance and professionalism. Enter the high bun style, which is produced by creating a high ponytail and wrapping it around itself several times. Leave a few loose strands in the back and on the sides to keep the appearance from seeming overly harsh.

12: Messy Bun with Bangs

Asymmetrical bangs are always in vogue, and if you’re fortunate enough to have long, medium-to-thick hair, you’ll be able to pull this look off with ease! Instead of using a brush or a comb, finger comb hair into place to get the perfect messy bun. Finish the outfit with a ribbon, headband, or bandana to complete the appearance.

13: Twisted Style for Long Hair

Hair twists are a terrific option since they are simple to customize to your specific hair length and texture. Make a ponytail by combing your hair out and twisting it into either large or little parts. Tie the rest of your hair into a bun and tie it in place using hair pins. Make use of a high-quality setting spray to keep your hair looking neat and tidy all day.

14: Voluminous Bun with Teased Roots

When it comes to great style and low effort, this hairstyle is the best of the best. This style is best suited to long hair that is thin or medium textured, since it is perfectly coiffed without slicking it down too much in the process. Wear the bun during the day, and then dress it up with jewels and heavier makeup when it’s time to enjoy the nighttime festivities.

15: Ageless Messy Bun

Messy buns aren’t only for teenagers or young ladies; anyone of any age may pull off this hairdo. If your hair is more mature, attempt a low bun that is done only with your fingers, rather than with a brush. Don’t get too caught up in making it flawless; the whole point is to showcase your free spirit.

16: Side Bun with Braided Headband

The versatility of messy buns allows you to wear them in a multitude of ways; however, for something unusual, try pairing a side bun with a braided headband. In accordance with your hair’s length and thickness, this style may be achieved as either a big, dramatic appearance or a more subtle, wispy beauty.

17: Braided Low Bun Updo

After beginning with a French braid that runs down the back of the head, this hairstyle comes to a close with the lower half of the braid being twisted and tied into a low bun.

What is it that makes it so exciting? The sloppy appearance, as well as the bright and dramatic color contrasts, such as brilliant purple against jet black, are all appealing. Many color combinations look fantastic – the only way to find your favorite is to experiment with different ones.

18: Crimped Messy Bun

Do you want to know how to create a messy bun that is completely different from the rest? Crinkle your hair before styling it to resurrect the crimped hairstyle from the 1980s. – If you don’t have access to a curling iron, sleep with wet strands sectioned into micro braids all over your head while you’re awake.

19: Mini Messy Style

If you’re in the process of growing out your hair, you’re probably familiar with the irritation of not having enough appropriate styling options. In the event that your hair is at least chin length, low buns can save the day. Nothing is wrong if certain layers or strands fall out; it only contributes to the overall fashionable, chaotic effect you’re striving for.

20: Braids into Top Knot

If your hair is thin and not too long, you can attempt this variant of the top knot once again. Straighten hair and pull it back into a ponytail, leaving a few front parts out so you may braid them. Using your fingers, pull the braids back and tie them together with the rest of your hair into a loose knot.

21: Upside Down Braid and Bun

French braid your hair from the base of your neck all the way up to the top of your head by flipping it upside down. Using an elastic, wrap your hair around the elastic and spritz with a mild setting spray. Cute messy buns may be as basic or as complex as you choose – they are all equally stunning in their own way.

22: Side Swept Low Bun

Using only your fingers, divide your hair into three portions and pin them up. To finish, twist and pin each portion in a variety of places, culminating with a messy bun that has been pushed to the side. What a beautiful shambles!

23: Messy Bun with Volume

This elegant style adds volume to the hair without making it seem overdone or cheesy. When styled with a bouffant, the untidy bun is suddenly elevated from casual to dressy. The addition of highlights is usually a welcome bonus when working with techniques that involve twisting and wrapping your hair.

24: High Bun with Flat Twists

Do you want to know how to make a sloppy bun appear more artistic? The solution can be found in the plaited details. If you want to stand out from the crowd, try this hairstyle with rope twist braids up either side of the head and a fishtail top bun.

25: Messy Twisted Bun

A low bun with totally dry strands and a portion of hair twisted over the hair elastic will provide a subtle but attractive accent to the otherwise plain appearance. To soften the look, add bangs or side tendrils to the knot you’re wearing.

26: Parisian Chic Hairstyle

This appears to be a natural appearance, at least on the surface. Let yourself be inspired by the high life in Paris and wear your messed-up bun to a formal occasion. Remember to use your preferred hair fixator to ensure that your hair will remain in place throughout the day. It may be worn with pearls and sunglasses to create an effortlessly stylish Parisian style.

27: Long Side Braid Updo

Adding a messy bun for long hair to your side braid can take it to the next level. We understand that it is difficult to imagine that a braid and a bun can work so nicely together, but this hairdo proves us wrong. Anyone who has highlights or a variety of color colors should give it a try at least once.

28: Cotton Candy Hairstyle

Is there anything more intriguing than this color degradation?

With all of the twists and richness of color in this low bun, one can’t help but think of unicorns and cotton candy. Once you’ve decided on a color, keep an eye out for the appropriate length: the loose hair that will frame your face should not be longer than your shoulders.

29: Chunky Bun with Flowers

Here’s a hairdo that calls for more improvisation than it does technical proficiency. This is the most imaginative of all the messy bun hairstyles since it allows for complete freedom of expression. You may use actual flowers tied to bobby pins (you’ll need a lot of them) or hunt around for hairpins with different flowers on them; think of it as a garden of flowers for your hair.

30: Shades of Blue on the Side

It takes more imagination to pull off this look than it does technical ability. This is the most imaginative of all the messy bun hairstyles since it allows for the most creative expression. It’s possible to use actual flowers affixed to bobby pins (you’ll need a lot of them), or you can hunt for hairpins with different flowers on them; imagine it as a garden.

31: Bohemian Chic Low Bun

When you have unkempt buns like these, there is always something elvish about them. The mix of bright hues and bohemian hair jewelry made of leather and metal transports us to a completely different realm. This is not a hairstyle you should wear every day; instead, keep it for special occasions. And, certainly, the frantic need to demonstrate how your rings complement your hairstyle qualifies as something remarkable in our eyes.

32: Inverted Braid and Bun

When it comes to this haircut, you have two options: 1) You have extremely long hair; 2) You are comfortable with the use of hair extensions. It’s all about the duration in this case. For this look, you will need enough hair for a thick inverted braid starting from the bottom of your head, and even more hair for an epic messy bun on top of your head.

33: Double Braided Side Bun

When it comes to long hair, this style is great for those who need to refresh their neck region during sunny days but are weary of ponytails and basic doughnut buns. For beginners, we recommend starting with the braids and leaving the rest of the hair loose so that the ends of the braids can easily mesh to produce the falling appearance of this messy bun. For more advanced stylists, we recommend starting with the braids and leaving the rest of the hair loose.

34: Braided Casual ‘Do

This messy bun is made out of 50 percent braid and 50 percent bun; not all messy buns can make that claim. Simply begin a waterfall braid like you normally would, keeping it lower and looser as you go, and when you get half way through, roll it everything up in a sloppy knot. Remember that the hairband will be visible, so you may wish to match or contrast it with the rest of your ensemble.

35: Twisted Messy Bun

Let’s get this party started with a twist. This bun updo is full of twists, rolls, and depth, making it perfect for any dance floor. If you have contrasting highlights, as seen in the photo, your hair will not only look rhythmic, but it will also taste delicious – and we are not talking about ice cream swirl delicious here.

36: Bun with Tangled Braids

With this messy bun for long hair, you’ll feel like you’re knotted in knots.

This version of the iconic braid, which was inspired by French maids, is lighter and more casual than ever. This bun is perfect for rainy days, especially if you are continuously wearing a hood. Nothing to be concerned about if a few hairs are out of place: it is all part of the overall appearance.

37: Neatly Rolled High Bun

We have created a style that is suited for those with short hair. In order to get a more or less complex hair roll, the length of your hair will be important. Not only is the pretzel look popular in formal hairstyle catalogues all over the business, but it will not detract from your overall appearance. So go ahead and experiment with it!

38: Big Looped Bun

This is the best and most stylish of all the messy bun hairstyles that have been featured in this post. What is it about it that we find so appealing? Because it stays loyal to its origins and all it does is accentuate the impact of the original, more restrained design, it is a popular choice. However, we must agree that the great chalk color game that we saw here earned us a few more points.

39: Formal Bun for Medium Hair

With this twist bun with braid, attending family reunions and meeting the in-laws will be a lot less stressful. It will take some upkeep, so you may want to ask a buddy over to help you with the hairstyling. You will not be disappointed as you get closer to the finish line, as you will feel prepared for meeting and greeting for the following 24 hours.

40: Elegant Updo with a Bouffant

Toss out your sock bun for a moment. Because your hair will be performing the majority of the work, this hairstyle will require little to no support or filling. If you have thick hair, you will have an edge when it comes time to tangle the ends of your locks and branches. There are a variety of products available on the market that might be beneficial to persons with thinning hair. We’ve gone through 40 different bun hairstyles and are still alive to tell the tale.
