All Star Wars nerds are invited to attend: It was necessary to fix Princess Leia’s hair after adorning the house with geeky decorations, creating a DIY version of our favorite character’s outfit, and obsessing over the franchise’s main females. It is, without a doubt, epic. As Star Wars Day (May the Fourth be with you!) approaches, our princess deserves to take the stage once more, this time with a contemporary twist. Three of my favorite Princess Leia hair moments have been reworked into entertaining, five-minute hairstyles that any level of fan or fashion lady would want to put on.

Princess Leia’s Double Braids from “​Episode VI: The Return of the Jedi​” –Casual Rope Braids

These pigtails give a casual twist to tight, leather-threaded braids, making them ideal for lazy days when you want a quick and simple look to throw on.

Step 1: Section + Twist

Pick up one hair near your temple and divide it into two equal portions by separating the strand into two equal sections. Take one strand in each hand and wrap it around your fingers in a counterclockwise pattern, starting with one strand in each hand. Then, in a clockwise manner, cross the pieces over one another and continue on your journey.

Step 2: Secure + Repeat

Using a transparent elastic, tie the rope braid together when you reach the end of the length of the strand. Then do the same thing on the other side. If you want to dress this look up a little more, you may curl the ends of your hair.

Princess Leia’s Milkmaid Braid from ​”Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back​” –Messy Fishtail Crown Braid

The thick milkmaid braid used by Princess Leia is given a romantic makeover with a sloppy fishtail-Dutch plait and loose, long tendrils that frame your face.

Step 1: Section

To begin, divide your hair into two halves and pin them together. Place a pin through the right portion of the fabric so that it will be simpler to deal with the left section.

Step 2: Fishtail Dutch Braid

Take a tiny strand of hair from the crown of your head and begin fishtail braiding, making the following modifications: Braid beneath rather than over the top (this creates a stunning 3D aspect in the braid) and integrate little strands as you progress.

Step 3: Secure + Repeat

Princess Leia Space Buns from “Episode IV: A New Hope” –Half-Up Half-Down Double Buns

While this is without a doubt Princess Leia’s most famous hairstyle, it is also one of the most difficult to pull off outside of Halloween. With a pair of little buns, this half-up, half-down style feels more approachable and current.

Step 1: Section

Make a section from the top of your head to the bottom of your ear with a fine-tooth comb.

Step 2: Cheerleader Pigtails

After that, pull your hair into a high ponytail and tie it with an elastic. Once you’ve finished, repeat the process on the opposite side.

Step 3: Create the Buns

Finger comb your hair to provide a little volume, then start twisting your ponytail to form a bun for a more formal look. Bobby pin it in place, and then repeat the process on the other side. Princess Leia Cinnamon Buns Hairstyle: A New Hope.

The hair in Star Wars is arguably of the most beautiful hair ever seen in science fiction; perhaps the most renowned hairdo is Princess Leia’s signature cinnamon buns from Episode IVA Hew Hope, which can be seen here. A frequent misconception regarding these buns (as well as most of the hairstyles in Star Wars) is that they are created using Leia’s own naturally long hair. This is not true. As a matter of fact, Carrie Fisher had short hair during filming Star Wars, and Leia’s buns were most likely produced with the use of hair extensions.

Breakdown of Leia’s Buns:

An examination of Leia’s cinnamon buns indicates that they are most likely not wigs or hairpieces in disguise. Although just slightly different from scene to scene, the form and location of Leia’s buns can be seen changing practically every time she appears on screen, and her hair can be seen unraveling following action sequences. In addition, take note of the fact that Leia’s hair buns are a somewhat different hue than (Carrie Fisher’s). Throughout the film, the forms of the buns alter as well, going from very round to somewhat oval in shape.

1. It takes several layers of twisting and coiling to create Leia’s giant bun, which is formed like the shell of a snail (fallow the numbers from 1 outwards.) Leia’s buns cover practically the entire ear and just a little portion of the checkerboard.
2. (the height and positioning of the buns) In the photographs above, the arrangement of Leia’s buns is such that the top edge of the bun comes to approximately an inch over Leia’s temple.
3. Leia’s buns begin around at eye level and beneath the shell of her ear, with the center starting around eye level.
4. (Please keep in mind that all of these characteristics of Leia’s buns will vary significantly from person to person.) Also, keep in mind that Carrie Fisher has a widows peak, which might make it difficult to split her hair along the middle of her head.

One of the reasons we believe Leia’s buns in the movies were most likely created using hair extensions is that the buns alter every time they are fashioned, making it appear as though her own hair is being groomed rather than a wig piece.

Tips When Using Kayley Melissa’s Method:

Hair spray should be used from 10″ away to coat the hair and then brushed through; this will maintain the hair smoother and less frizzy after it has been tied with an elastic tie. In order to achieve the optimum results, all hairspray should be applied from a distance of around 10″ when a little flexibility is required. (It is also important to note that hairspray should not be used on synthetic hair.) In this style, huge hair pins should be used instead of little ones; there are many other types of hair pins available, but large hair pins will perform the best in this situation.

After that, drape a hair net over the tops of the buns to complete the appearance.

Things You’ll Need For Leia’s Buns:

• Large hair pins (that match the color of the hair)
• 2 hair nets (that match the color of the hair)
• 2 elastic hair ties (that match the color of the hair)
• Hair braiding supplies, 2 containers of Kanekalon gigantic braid (matched to hair color) (Note: Color2 is a dark brown that is almost black in appearance.) A comb

A Brief History of Princess Leia’s Buns

Carrie Fisher’s mother, actress Debbie Reynolds, reportedly cautioned her to avoid parts that needed “any strange hairstyle.” Carrie Fisher followed her mother’s advice. Fortunately, Fisher did not follow her mother’s advice and instead elected to play as Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan, a fierce diplomat-turned-rebel leader who has one of the most famous “strange hairdos” in cinematic history, as seen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

What was the inspiration for Princess Leia’s buns? How did George Lucas come up with them? He stole them from someplace else, like he did with a lot of the richStar Warsmythology that exists.

PAGING PANCHO VILLA

“I was striving very hard to create something unusual, something that wasn’t fashion,” Lucas explained to TIMEMagazine in 2002. “So I went with a type of Southwestern Pancho Villa lady revolutionary aesthetic,” Lucas continued. “The buns are essentially from Mexico around the turn of the twentieth century.” Which sounds like a well-thought-out explanation—except that locating examples of Princess Leia-style buns on the heads of revolutionaries from the turn-of-the-century Mexican Revolution is extremely difficult, as Kitbashed’s Michael Heilemann discovered when he began his investigation into Lucas’ allegations.

According to Heilemann, “If you stop and think about it for a second, it makes perfect sense.” “When would revolutionaries find the time to put your hair up in two absurd buns, which are hard to maintain for any length of time, even with contemporary state-of-the-art hair product technology, if you manage to tame your hair enough to play along in the first place?”

TWO BUNS, ONE STONE

Another likely source for Leia’s buns, and one that is considerably more old than “turn-of-the-century Mexico,” is Spain’s Lady of Elche, who is said to have inspired the princess. According to legend, the Lady is the bust of an Iberian princess or priestess who lived 2,500 years ago; in addition to her ornate necklaces, she also sports a headpiece that looks a little like the Millennium Falcon, which is attached to each side of her cap with pins. Was Lucas able to discover inspiration for both the Falcon and Princess Leia’s hair during a single visit to the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid?

SQUASH BLOSSOMS IN BLOOM

Young Native American women of the Hopi people in the southwest United States (near Pancho Villa’s stomping grounds) would be a more plausible source of Lucas’ inspiration. These ladies dressed their hair in what were known as ” squash blossom whorls,” which were reminiscent of squash blossoms. When wearing whorls, which were created by coiling extremely long lengths of hair around flexible wooden shapes, women were often in their adolescent years, and they served as a sign of fertility (though men were also known to wear the bunsduring religious dances).

PARKING IN THE COOTIE GARAGE

However, the eventhosebuns don’t precisely resemble the cinnamon rolls Princess Leia would eventually wear since they appear to poke out too far from the head.

BUNS IN SPACE

Though Leia’s style of bun remained largely dormant for the next 50 or so years, Heilemann points out that it was featured in the 1955 filmThe Dam Busters, which tells the remarkable true story of the RAF’s “bouncing bombs” during World War II; in the film, they were worn on the head of scientist Barnes Wallis’ wife, who was played by actress Julie Christie. According to Heilmann, Lucas would have surely watched the film, given that it served as inspiration for the Star Wars saga’s Battle of Yavin, which was one of the earliest Rebel triumphs and the battle in which the first Death Star was destroyed.

Of course, once Fisher donned the buns for the first time in Star Wars in 1977, it was game over; today, it’s nearly impossible not to associate side buns with Princess Leia (despite Ariana Grande’s flirtation with “space buns,” which sparked all sorts of misinformed headlines in an attempt to link her buns to Leia’s buns).

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOUR HAIRSTYLIST

Star Wars fans will be interested to know that, while Leia’s buns are her most recognizable appearance, they are by no means her only outré hairdo. Despite Lucas’ claims to the contrary, Skepchick does an excellent job of not only chronicling Leia’s many hairstyles (which, despite Lucas’ claims, are definitely influenced by the times from which they came), but also pointing out just how difficult each one would be to achieve for real, un-Forced hair without a team of hair and make-up wizards—not to mention painful!

Fisher revealed that she will feature in the next film Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but she also stated that she will not be bringing her buns to the set of the film.
