How To Draw Realistic Food Dessert

Realistic Desserts in Watercolour (8 easy steps!)

Watercolour is such a free-flowing, unexpected medium that it may be difficult to create realism in some pieces. Figuring out the water component of watercolour is a tremendous learning process, and then there’s the issue of blending the colors, which is another puzzle. When it comes to watercolour realism, Lenard Laiis an amazing artist from whom to master the craft. He specializes in food painting since it is both entertaining and appetizing, and because it allows him to obtain realistic shines and edges with watercolour!

Step 1: The Sketch

Because it is the easiest approach, Lenard begins by tracing his line work onto the canvas. In the demonstration, he outlines his tracing procedure. In this particular instance, doing the line art freehand was more efficient for me, so that’s what I did. No matter whatever style you choose, make careful to draw gently and avoid leaving your lines too squished together. I based my line art on the inverted reference Lenard traced, which means that my painting is the inverse of the picture in the demonstration.

Watercolor necessitates much planning in order to keep bright tones; therefore, manually sketching the highlights is beneficial.

Step 2: Starting the Cherries

Because it is the shortest approach, Lenard begins by tracing his line work on the page. This demonstration includes an explanation of his tracing method. Since doing the line art freehand was more efficient for me in this situation, I went ahead and did so. Make careful to draw softly and avoid leaving your lines too muddy, no matter which style you choose to employ. In order to create a painting that is reversed from the one seen in the demo, I sketched my line art from a flipped reference Lenard traced.

In order to keep bright tones in watercolour, careful preparation is required; therefore, manually painting the highlights is advantageous.

Step 3: Realistic Shadows

For this phase, having a basic grasp of complimentary colors would be really beneficial. Red and green have a tendency to cancel each other out, resulting in a darker and more neutral color. Consequently, to create the darkest shadows, combine a deeper red with a dash of green and a smidgeon of blue to prevent the color from turning brown. Rewet each cherry, working in a smart manner so that no contacting parts are wet at the same time, and then apply the darker color to the shadow portions of each cherry.

Add more colour to the areas between the cherries and in the cherry pits where the shadows are cast. In addition, you may moisten the highlights a little to smooth them down and make them a more authentic off-white in appearance.

Step 4: Cherry Stems!

To get the authentic stem color, combine a little amount of dark red mixture with a small amount of green to make the combination more green in color. To construct the stems of the cherry, use a crisp brushstroke without pausing and resuming. They’re starting to look delectable!

Step 5: The Cast Shadow

Painting the cast shadow behind the cherries with the dark mixture from earlier, possibly with the hue neutralized even further, is a good idea. Maintain your edge as exact as possible in order to keep this as realistic as possible.

Step 6: The Tart

Lenard has a favorite color of gouache that he prefers to use for his tart. Because I didn’t have it, I blended a yellowy-orange into the colors that were already on my palette instead. However, Lenard did not moisten the paper’s surface before applying the wash of brown, whereas I did so.

Step 7: Another Cast Shadow

This part would have gone better for me if I had used less staining colors in the first place. Painting a bit further out than I desired, then lifting the excess with a paper towel to create a gradient was my idea, but it didn’t work out quite that way. Nonetheless, I believe everything is in order! “There are no errors, only happy accidents,” says Lenard, invoking the words of artist Bob Ross.

Step 8: “The Sprinkle of Love”

I took the luxury of adding a few gel pen highlights to this painting to make it stand out a little more from the rest of the painting. After that, I proceeded to the most enjoyable stage. Lenard refers to this stage as “The Sprinkle of Love,” and it is the method by which he completes all of his culinary paintings. Make a little spatter of crimson on your paper with your brush by tapping it above the surface of the paper. These are spontaneous and enjoyable steps that also serve to bring the entire picture together with a whimsical touch.

I’m confident that you gained as much knowledge from his Live Demos as I did, so be sure to check out his Mini Workshop!

Adobe Creative Cloud video screenshot courtesy of Adobe Have you ever fantasized of making your own edible artwork on the scale of those shown in Studio Ghibli films? With the help of Adobe Fresco, a free painting program for the iPad, Japanese painter and media creatorTainosukihas been creating stunning illustrations of tasty dishes. The artworks are so convincing that you nearly feel like you could reach inside the sweets with a fork. The schools of fish that the artist enjoys including into the composition are what gives them away.

Three phases are involved in his digital drawings: a basic sketch generated with the pencil tool, a base paint to establish the overall tone of the image, and the finishing touches of shading and texture to complete the image.

The artist offers one final piece of advice to anyone aspiring to master the art of shading: “The secret to creating a realistic artwork is to avoid using pure white while sketching,” he advises.

How to Draw a Cake with Watercolor and Colored Pencils

Drawing a piece of delectable chocolate biscuit cake with tangerine and berries is the subject of this colored pencil tutorial. While the end result will be delectable, there is no requirement for baking expertise. This is a mixed media project since we will be using a variety of art items to produce this piece of artwork. Using watercolor to create an under layer, while colored pencils are utilized to add texture and details, this painting comes to life. As part of this class, I’ll walk you through the steps of producing a food illustration, including how I include a color scheme into my workflow and how I make rational decisions.

Art Supplies for this Project

I’ll be using an A4 piece of watercolor paper for this project. Our advantage may be found in the rough roughness of its surface, which can be exploited to our benefit. We’ll need a graphite pencil to do an underdrawing for this project. I recommend using an HB or H pencil for this task. Softer alternatives generate thicker lines that are more difficult to remove than harder options. Keep some erasers on hand for this job – a kneaded eraser and a vinyl eraser are the ideal combo for this task.

  • It is OK to use any brand of toothpaste that you like.
  • For the watercolor application, we’ll also need some paintbrushes.
  • A synthetic bristle brush is also available for use in the creation of expressive watercolor splashes.
  • Chinese White is a color from the Derwent collection.
  • It makes it easy to add highlights to your photos.

It should be noted that because this pencil is incredibly soft, the tip goes dull quite rapidly. A pencil sharpener will assist you in maintaining the sharpness of your pencils so that you can make exact marks. The names and swatches of the colored pencils that were selected are listed below.

Details and Colors for the Cake Drawing

Before we begin sketching, I strongly advise that we generate an idea for our work. What should the design of your cake be? Will the foundation’s shape be similar to that of a triangle, a square, or a rectangular shape? Is there going to be anything on the top plane of the cake to garnish it? The most straightforward method of obtaining a ready-made notion is to make use of a high-quality reference photo. You may also go through some existing cake recipes with images to see if you can locate one to use as a starting point.

  1. I’m going to make decisions based on what I remember and what I imagine.
  2. Take, for example, the fact that my piece of cake will resemble an elongated cube – or, more accurately, a rectangular cuboid.
  3. The top plane of the cake will be topped with a chocolate icing to make it look more festive.
  4. Why did you choose a tangerine instead of an orange?
  5. In terms of flavor, I feel that a tangerine is a superior choice when paired with berries.
  6. It may be beneficial to jot down or draw out your thoughts.
  7. The actual color of the cake will be anywhere between light yellow-orange and dark orange in hue.
See also:  How To Make Strawberry, Jello, Angel Food Cake, Dessert

In addition, I’m planning to incorporate some pure orange and yellow-orange highlights into the design.

I’m going to include various blue components — the berries – in order to make the artwork more fascinating.

A small amount of the complimentary hue will be sufficient to produce a pleasing color contrast.

Inside your head, you may go through the process of choosing color selections.

Do you like the color scheme that was created?

Drawing a Cake with a Graphite Pencil

Starting with the structure of our cake, let’s get started. The shape is similar to that of a cube, although it is somewhat extended. To a limited extent, the vertical lines diverge, which adds to the sensation that we’re gazing down on a cube from above. This also gives the artwork a more alive and dynamic sense. Maintain the lightest possible graphite markings on your paper. Please keep in mind that I have increased the contrast between the lines in my process shots for your convenience. It’s possible that your lines are hardly visible.

  • Keep the laws of perspective in mind when you draw the lines around the area!
  • On the upper level, I work on refining the components.
  • I use an eraser to smooth the edges of the layers that are between each other.
  • The same may be said for the outside margins of the cake as well as the basic contour line of the cake.

You may include some textural characteristics in your cake – a slice of cake often has a porous appearance and feel. Make a variety of hollow apertures, including some that are smaller and some that are larger. Do not, on the other hand, overburden the drawing with too much visual information!

Painting the Under Painting with Watercolor

Now that we’ve got our drawing in place, it’s time to start working on the colored underlayer of watercolor. The completion of this phase will allow us to save time before moving on to colored pencils. Colored pencils have the benefit of covering a large area rapidly, thus there are no flecks of white paper showing through the applications when using watercolor. For some painters, working with watercolors might be scary. It’s no surprise, considering that this medium needs expertise and experience in order to produce art pieces that are either more or less intricate.

  1. Everything we’ll be doing in the next phases is appropriate for complete beginners.
  2. After the watercolor has been applied and dried, it is very hard to remove any remaining graphite.
  3. I use the bigger round brush to wet the area with clean water before applying the paint to the surface.
  4. Yellow Ochre is applied to the cream layers that are lighter in color.
  5. I use this color to treat the nuts as well.
  6. I use Golden to coat the tangerine slice on the plate.
  7. Allowing the surrounding areas to dry completely before painting over them with contrasting blue paint can help to prevent bleeding and desaturation.

Following that, I’ll go back and repeat the identical steps that I did in the prior stage.

The brush has a considerable amount of moisture on it.

With additional Burnt Umber and Yellow Och, I make the vertical planes of the cake somewhat darker than its top, creating a more dramatic effect.

You have complete control over the placement of the light source and the character of the lighting in your photograph.

This technique aids in the creation of a gritty or porous texture between the biscuit layers.

The use of this hue in other places of the artwork can be enhanced by using a light application of it.

In addition, I use this hue to add some strokes to the lighter layers of the cake.

I do, however, have an idea on how to give our artwork a more artistic appearance.

First and foremost, we’ll need a protective stencil that closely replicates the shape of our cake, including the adornments on top of the cake.

The quickest and most straightforward method of creating a stencil is to place a sheet of thin (printing or tracing) paper on top of your artwork.

Draw a rough outline of the shape with a pencil and then cut it out.

This is an example of my artwork that has been covered with a stencil (see below).

As you can see, the stencil is doing an excellent job at completing its task!

In order to ensure that the water in your container is clean, it may be a good idea to replace the water.) Then, using your finger, push the bristles of a paintbrush of any color into the paint as indicated in the illustration below.

When you let go of the bristles, they’ll spring back into place and the paint will fall onto the paper, producing a pattern of splashes on the page at random.

I propose that you experiment with numerous positions before making a final decision.

Vary the pressure applied to the bristles, the angle at which they are positioned in relation to the paper, and the amount of water in the brush. To create the splashes, I utilized watercolor paint in all four of the available colors.

Drawing the Cake with Colored Pencils

After we’ve completed our watercolor underpainting, we’ll be ready to add colored pencils to the top of the painting. I useCream to cover the lighter portions in the picture, including as the nuts and some of the tangerine slice’s surface area. The pencil is moving in little circles, and the coating is even and thin across the whole surface. I applyBurnt Siena on all of the brown places of my body. The top plane of the cake retains its brighter color than the cake’s vertical sides. By darkening the right side of the cake, I can establish a tonal contrast between the vertical planes of the cake.

  1. Lines that point in a certain direction are also an option.
  2. Using this shade, I apply a tiny coat over the darker sections of the nuts in order to bring the items together in terms of color.
  3. It becomes more colorful and contrasting as the peel and the inside parts grow more contrasted.
  4. Consider the possibility that the cream contains small pieces of tangerine as an ingredient.
  5. Additionally, I paint a little layer of this color to the shadows under the blueberries that have been cast.
  6. Along with that, I emphasize the shadows between the chocolate shavings and beneath the nuts.
  7. I use this hue to bring the darker parts of the blueberries into harmony with the rest of the fruit.

It is possible to include this color into the pulp to produce a pleasing variety.

In addition, I use this color to highlight the nuts and orange spots in the cream layers.

Raw Umber is used to cover the brown spots on the canvas.

Then I put a thin layer ofRaw Umberto on top of the cream layers of the cake and bake it for another 15 minutes.

It requires only a slight desaturation.

The upper portion of the tangerine retains a modest lighter hue in order to give the impression that light is streaming through the pulp.

Chinese White is used to make little dots on the cake’s layers, which I then pipe onto the cake.

This pencil is used to burnish the berries and nuts on the cake.

Also see: 12 Colored Pencil Techniques Because the pencil is really delicate, I try not to press down too hard.

Chinese White is applied over the lighter cream layers to help them blend together.

Because I want to create the illusion of a shine on the citrus pulp, I leave visible strokes in the upper section of the tangerine. Now it’s time to assess the work of art. Please feel free to include any other information if necessary.

How to Draw Mouth-Watering Anime Food by melisdilisen

When it comes to food, eye appeal is quite important, especially when the meal is only a picture. In this article, I’ll show you how to add visual appeal to your drawings of food by creating a visual appeal for the dish. However, while the food in this video is predominantly drawn in an anime style, the methods and tricks presented here may be used to any other digital art medium as well as anime. Before I get into the specifics, I’d like to share some basic advice on how to prepare delectable dishes with friends and family.

1. GENERAL TIPS

1- When it comes to food, humans have evolved to be drawn to bright and colorful hues since they are visually appealing. This might be due to the feeling of freshness and non-contaminated appearance that we humans get from the brilliant hue. To make our food more visually appealing, we need to employ greater chroma, which means more vibrant colors than what would be seen in conventional cuisine to make it more appealing. This idea is not just applicable to the arts, but also to the food sector, which may use it to make items that are more colorful in appearance.

As a result, many of them may favor lighter shades of colors as well.

The more gleaming the meal is, the more mouth-watering it appears to be.

In order to get a nicer appearance for food commercials, photographers generally spray their food with hairspray in order to make it bright and brilliant.

2. ANIME STYLE FOOD DRAWING

Line art: When painting food in the anime style, you either draw a very thin line art or none at all, similar to how you would paint food in a realist painting. However, for my photos, I want to use thin line art and then color them in later when I get around to coloring them in. Even though there is line art on the food, it is not always black; instead, it may be tinted with a hue that matches the dish’s own base color. There is often no line art on the plates when it comes to the lithographs.

Despite this, there is a wide range in quality amongst different animes.

In the meanwhile, the aesthetic of Studio Ghibli remains somewhere in the middle.

3. DRAWING RAMEN

The use of line art is common when portraying food in anime style, yet it is either very thin or non-existent when depicting food in realist paintings. However, for my photos, I want to use thin line art and then color them in later when I get around to painting them properly. As a result, even if there is line art on the food, it is not always black, but rather colored in accordance with the item’s base color instead. There is often no line art on the plates when it comes to the game. The color of food coloring frequently extends beyond the color scheme of the anime it is used in, and it has a more realistic tone to it, as opposed to the color of anime characters, who are usually one flat color and minimal shading.

Food Wars, on the other hand, has a more realistic approach where line art is not evident and the color palette is rich with subtle progressive transitions between different hues, whereas Heidi has a very plain dual color scheme with firm lines.

3.1. DRAWING CLEAR LINES

While Heidi has a very plain dual color scheme with harsh lines, Food Wars has a more realistic approach where line art is not evident and the color palette is rich with subtle progressive transitions between different hues.

3.2. DRAWING THE SOUP (LIQUIDS)

Now I’ve gotten to my broth coloring, and I started by creating a circular broth layer that covered all of the food before deleting any of it. Because I wanted to utilize bold colors, I chose red instead of brown for the broth color instead of brown. In addition, I changed the layer mode to ‘Multiply.’ In a later step, I made this layer invisible for a short period of time by clicking on the eye symbol adjacent to the layer, and then I went back to my ‘food color’ layer and used the ‘Auto Choose’ tool to select all of the meals that I wanted to display above the soup.

  • Except for the noodles, everything of the cuisine is now totally free of red coloring.
  • I opened my ‘food color’ layer once again in order to display the noodle pieces that float above the liquid.
  • When I returned to my broth color layer, I only removed the portions of the noodle that I wanted to remain above the broth, as I had done previously, and lowered the opacity of my layer to 75% in order to differentiate between the noodle below and above the soup, as I had done previously.
  • In a subsequent step, I cloned my broth layer and set it as my second broth layer, but I altered its mode to Normal and its opacity to 100 percent instead.
  • The colors of the soup were brought out more vividly as a result of this.

I created a new broth layer and, using the soft airbrush tool and the same red color as before, I drew round objects in random locations across the broth, before switching the layer mode to multiply (see below).

3.3. COLORING THE LINE ART

Following the completion of our flat color drawings, we may begin coloring our line work. To do this, we will click on the “Lock Transparent Pixels” button located above the layers window, and we will be able to color our line art without worrying about painting beyond the lines. After I’m through with the base colors of my meal, I’ll add some decorative elements to my dish to make it appear more appealing. I designed a brush for the plate ornamentation, which I then submitted to Clip Studio Assets for use.

  1. Please feel free to use it into your artwork as a decorative element.
  2. In order to design my ornamentation, I established a new layer to make it less mistake prone and to allow me to simply delete the areas if I accidentally overflowed the canvas.
  3. To do so, simply click on the tool icon and select the brush tip that I have generated.
  4. To make it easier to discern between the two layers, I colored my shadow layer blue and my highlights layer yellow.
  5. However, I choose not to employ that strategy in order to have greater control over my color palette.
  6. For the bowl shadow, I create a new shadow layer in the layers panel.
  7. I imagined the light source to be coming from the right side of the bowl, and I drew shadows within the right side of the bowl and outside the left side of the bowl to represent that idea.
  8. In order to do this, I constructed a separate layer since, physiologically speaking, the reflection over water is stronger than the reflection over solid foods.
  9. As a result, I need to shine more light on my broth and perhaps a little more light on some of the wet areas of the noodles.
  10. When it came to the lighting, I chose a light orangish hue and created light beams around the ramen soup, particularly around the point where the noodles descended into the bowl.

3.4. CREATING HEAT EFFECT FOR FOOD

When I think of mouth-watering cuisine, the first thing that springs to mind are the freshly prepared main courses that have just been prepared. In many meals, heat causes a chemical reaction that enhances flavor and adds scent when it is administered in adequate amounts to the item. As a result of the reaction in our taste receptors, a signal is transmitted to our brain, which becomes more strong as the temperature of the meal increases. As a result, it would be preferable if we depicted food that was still hot from the oven, as if it had just been taken out of the oven.

To get a steamy appearance, we may start by selecting a white hue and applying it with a light brush from the airbrush tool.

For me, I went with 45 percent.

Smudge some areas of the steam to give it a more complicated form, as demonstrated in the illustration below.

Last but not least, I selected a wooden table below for the background. For those who want a more exaggerated anime aesthetic, we can create a backdrop with the gradient tool, as I will demonstrate for sundae in the video below.

4. DRAWING SUNDAE

When I think of mouth-watering cuisine, the first thing that springs to mind are the freshly prepared main courses that have just been served. In many meals, heat causes a chemical reaction that enhances flavor and adds scent when it is administered in sufficient quantities to the item. The reaction in our taste buds sends a signal to our brain, which becomes more strong as the temperature of the meal rises in our stomach. Because of this, it is preferable if we depict food as if it has just been taken out of the oven rather than as if it has been sitting there for some time.

  1. We may start by selecting a white color and applying it with the delicate brush from the airbrush tool to create a steamy appearance first.
  2. 45 percent was the number I picked.
  3. Smudge some portions of the steam to give it a more complicated form, as illustrated in the illustration above.
  4. For those who want a more exaggerated anime aesthetic, we can create a backdrop with the gradient tool, as I will demonstrate for sundae in the next section.

4.1. GLASSES

When I think of mouth-watering delicacies, the first thing that springs to mind are the freshly prepared main dishes that have just been cooked. When applied to a significant amount of food, heat causes a chemical reaction that enhances flavor and adds scent. The reaction in our taste receptors sends a signal to our brain, which becomes more strong as the temperature of the meal rises. As a result, it is preferable if we depict food that is hot, as if it has just been taken out of the oven. In order to do this, we must add steam.

We may also use a rough steaming technique to lower the opacity of the layer to our desire.

Following that, we’ll choose the ‘Smudge’ tool from the Blend Tool collection.

Finally, I wanted a wooden table below for the background.

4.2. TIPS ON HOW TO DRAW ICE-CREAM FAST

Later on, I started sketching the ice cream on the canvas. I have a time-saving suggestion for you in this case. I utilized the three colors that I have depicted in the diagram below. I started by filling up my flat color. Second, I used a soft airbrush to draw several parallel lines that were parallel to each other.

After that, I smeared in the same direction as before using the ‘Finger tip’ option in the blend tool. Later, I used the pen tool to draw fine lines with the dark color I had chosen. Finally, I smeared them in the same direction as before. And this is what the final product looks like.

4.3. DRAWING A MOIST BROWNIE

Because the exterior layer of a brownie is drier than the internal layer of a brownie, I dyed the inside of the brownie a darker brown and the outside layer a lighter brown. In addition, I used the dark brown pigment to make cracks in the cake. Later, I used the ‘Droplet’ subtool in the ‘Airbrush’ subtool to draw holes in the brownie with a deeper brown color using the ‘Droplet’ tool. I used the white paint to accent some areas, particularly around the fractures. With the light brown hue, I created “droplets” into the cake, using the ‘Airbrush’ tool, to give it a wet appearance inside the cake.

4.4. CREAMY SURFACES

I used the gray pen tool to draw firm lines on the top of the sundae to represent the cream, which I then smeared with a damp brush. To color my line art, which is entirely optional, I returned to my line layer and selected the ‘Lock transparent pixels’ option from the layer panel, after which I was free to color the lines as I pleased. As a way to add some more coloring and draw shades on the glass, I started by coloring the regions where I believed there could be shadows using the pen tool, and then smeared them with the ‘finger tip’ tool to give them some depth.

4.5. PAINTING WATER DROPLETS FOR COLD FOOD AND BEVERAGE

I drew water droplets all around the glass to give it a cooler appearance. A frequent physical phenomena that you may notice in many glasses or tins that contain cold beverages or meals is the formation of ice crystals. The term for this event is condensation, and it happens when water vapor changes from a gaseous to a liquid state. Because of the cold surface of the tin or glass, when the ambient temperature meets it, it achieves its dew point, and as a result, water vapor condenses on the surface and condenses to create little droplets of water.

After I had drawn all of the droplets, I used the ‘Auto Select’ tool to select them all at the same time.

I selected SelectInvert Selected Area and created a new layer by clicking on it.

After selecting SelectInvert Selected Area a second time, I created a shadow inside the droplet using the same tool and on the same layer as the first.

4.6. DRAWING FLUID CHOCOLATE

My next step was to begin sketching the chocolate glaze using the brown hue as my foundation color, which I completed after finishing the previous step. I put lines inside the chocolate with a light brown hue to make it look more realistic. I copied the layer and changed the mode of the new layer to ‘Add (Glow). I selected FilterBlurGaussian Blur from the drop-down menu and set the blur level to 6.

Following that, I created a new layer and set it to screen mode. I used the orange color’soft airbrush’ tool to draw lines along the chocolate glaze to give it a sparkling appearance. After that, I drew white lines along the glaze using a black marker.

4.7. DRAWING ABSTRACT ANIME BACKGROUND

If you are using a table to display the glass, you will need to add light reflection in the opposite direction of the source of light directly close to the bottom of the glass for a finished look in terms of backdrop. In the ramen tutorial, I stated that solids are not as reflective as liquids, however this does not applicable to glasses, since they are very reflecting. Glasses have a higher reflecting power than other materials, and a light beam can always be seen right next to the glass on the table top.

However, I will use a different backdrop for the sundae.

These backdrops contribute to the enhancement of the sensations and emotions present in the scenario.

A new gradient tool going from the pink to the yellow hue was built in order to produce this type of background.

Later, on a new layer, I applied the default ‘Star,’ ‘Sparkle,’ and ‘Circle’ brushes from the decorating tools on the effect subtool, which I named ‘Star,’ ‘Sparkle,’ and ‘Circle,’ respectively.

Whatever the background, stars and glitter always make a dish appear to be much more than it actually is.

Try painting stars on the spinach and see for yourself how even the most mundane meal can appear to be so fantastic.

I selected FilterBlurGaussian Blur from the drop-down menu and set the blur to 25.

My instruction on how to draw food comes to a close.
