What Goes With Jambalaya? – 13 Perfect Side Dishes
*Some of the links in this post may be affiliate links. For further information, please check mydisclosure. Jambalaya is one of those foods that may nearly be considered a whole dinner in and of themselves. It has meat and flavorful spices, as well as rice, vegetables, and whatever else you choose to throw in it. This is a heavy dish, but even if you serve it with a light and simple side dish, you should serve it with something substantial. Choosing a side dish for a main meal can be difficult at times since you have to choose tastes that will complement rather than detract from your main dish’s characteristics.
What is a good accompaniment to jambalaya?
You may always switch up the meats, serve only dessert, or provide a light side dish that complements the rich and spicy flavor of jambalaya, depending on your preferences.
The combination of every one of these dishes creates a comprehensive and delectable supper that you will find yourself craving over and over again.
13 Perfectly Paired Side Dishes for Jambalaya
People differ in their views on whether or not to offer jambalaya as a full dinner. Some believe that some form of side dish or complementary addition is required, while others disagree. If you’re in the first category, we might be able to persuade you to reconsider. If you fall into the second category, you’ve come to the right spot for terrific side dish inspiration! Jambalaya is absolutely a dish that may be served on its own. However, we believe that if you serve it with a complementary side dish or perhaps a dessert, the flavor of the heavy spices would be enhanced significantly.
Jambalaya is a dish that has a great variety of ingredients.
It results in a meal that is both filling and tasty.
Cornbread is our first and most important suggestion! Nothing goes better with a substantial, spicy dinner like this than a freshly baked loaf of cornbread from scratch. In fact, if you’re eating this Creole cuisine the way it’s supposed to be eaten, cornbread is almost certainly going to be included. Cornbread has just the right amount of corn taste, combined with corn, and it may even be made sweet or savory depending on your own preferences.
When combining with jambalaya, we recommend something sweet since it not only brings out the flavors of the jambalaya, but it may also help your palate cope with the spicy quality of the jambalaya. These two are a match made in heaven, with no bars barred!
2. Corn or Corn on the Cob
Corn, particularly corn on the cob, is an excellent alternative to meat. Again, corn is a basic dish in Creole cuisine, so serving delicious corn on the cob alongside your jambalaya will complete your dinner to perfection. Corn on the cob may be prepared in a variety of ways, and it can be seasoned to your desire with butter or seasoning salt. When combined with the deep and spicy aromas of jambalaya, the light but savory flavor of corn will be a perfect match! You’ll have a crunchy side dish to go with your not-so-crunchy main meal if you use corn on the cob.
3. Green Salad
Corn, particularly corn on the cob, is an excellent alternative. Again, corn is a fundamental dish in Creole cuisine, so serving fresh corn on the cob with your jambalaya will complete your dinner to perfection. It is possible to prepare corn on the cob in a variety of ways, all of which may be seasoned to your preference. It will be amazing how well the mild yet savory flavor of corn will complement the rich and spicy flavors of jambalaya. You’ll have a crunchy side dish to accompany your not-so-crunchy main meal if you use corn on the cob.
4. Fried Okra
Some individuals include okra in their jambalaya, although it was never supposed to be included in the recipe in the first place. Some fried okra, on the other hand, makes an excellent side dish for jambalaya. Jambalaya is a southern cuisine, and fried okra is a southern dish, thus pairing the two dishes makes sense. Fried okra has a mild flavor and is crisp, so serving it alongside jambalaya is a delicious way to finish out the dinner.
5. Cheddar Biscuits
What is one thing that jambalaya never has? Cheese! You will have the perfect creation to serve alongside your jambalaya if you make some cheddar biscuits that feature lovely garlic and cheddar in the recipe. Cheddar biscuits are a simple addition to any spicy jambalaya meal, and the cheddar taste will go perfectly with the heat of the dish.
6. Hush Puppies
Many of these sides share a common theme in that they include either crunchy vegetables or corn in their flavor profile, and some of them include both. Hush puppies, another Southern side dish that is fantastic when served with jambalaya, offer both crunch and corn to the table. The combination of the spicy deliciousness of jambalaya and the sweet corn in hush puppies results in a compact and straightforward side dish that, once again, complements the entrée without adding too much additional.
7. Cucumber and Tomato Salad
As a result, it may be a little more difficult to pull off because you will need to get your tastes exactly perfect. Because cucumber and tomato salad is frequently blended with vinegar, it may be too acidic to be used as a topping for jambalaya. However, if you use a mild vinaigrette, such as an apple cider vinaigrette, or anything that is not nearly as sour, it may be a delicious side dish.
The ingredients are simple: cucumbers, tomatoes, perhaps some onions, and a modest bit of dressing are all you need. Simply season with salt and pepper to create a light side dish that is refreshing when served with the spicy and flavorful jambalaya on your platter.
8. Grilled Oyster
We’re quite aware of what you’re thinking. Isn’t grilled oysters another option for a main dish? It is not required to be such! Grilled oysters will be sweet, buttery, and perhaps a little briny, so your savory and spicy jambalaya will make a fantastic match for them. To complement the grilled oysters, we propose some remoulade sauce, which may be served on the side. You’ll find that they go well with the jambalaya when prepared this way.
9. Collard Greens
Collard greens, or even chard, are another vegetable that goes well with jambalaya as an accompaniment. Please bear in mind that your side dish is designed to be a complement to your main meal, therefore the flavors should be mild or complementing. As far as flavor is concerned, chard and collard greens are both delicate and mild, which is why they mix nicely with jambalaya. You can sauté them and you’ll have a nutritious, nutritionally dense side dish that will really assist to balance out the rest of the dinner.
You may even throw in some onions if you want to.
10. Corn Maque Choux
Yes, you are correct! Corn, yet again! We already know from our previous suggestions that corn goes really well with jambalaya, so we won’t say anything else. It produces something crisp and sweet, as well as something delicately scented. Cauliflower, tomatoes, and bell peppers are used to make Corn Maque Choux. Your jambalaya most likely already has tomatoes and bell peppers, but they will be placed in a fresh creation dish to ensure that they remain crisp and crunchy when served. This dish from Louisiana is ideal for serving with jambalaya.
11. Fruit Salad
Reduce your reliance on bread and vegetables in favor of a refreshing fruit salad. The fruit will be sweet and light, and it will be paired with the spicy and savory tastes of jambalaya to create a delicious dish. It could even make you feel like you’re eating dessert! Fruits such as berries, bananas, kiwi, and mangoes may be added to the mix to further round out the tastes.
12. Fried Zucchini
Fried zucchini is a tasty complement to any meal, much as fried okra is to any meal. With a mild flavor, zucchini makes an excellent side dish. The breading and frying procedure results in a light, flavorful, and crisp side dish that will complement the flavors of jambalaya while also helping to level out the spicy meal.
Because jambalaya contains rice, we normally do not advocate serving it with another carb on the side. A fast side dish of potatoes, on the other hand, may really bring your jambalaya to the next level. Avoid making your potatoes too filling by opting for something basic like mashed potatoes or potatoes au gratin. You could even try some cheesy scalloped potatoes for a win.

- What a disaster!
- This is quite risky since the jambalaya and beignets, as well as the pecan bread pudding with whiskey sauce, are still on the menu.
- As I had just finished dining at Cafe du Monde (which feels like yesterday but also forever in beignet time-haha), I’m curious to see how the two restaurants compare.
- It is no longer operating, but some of the owners have built a new restaurant on the other side of Bethesda, which isn’t quite the same, but isn’t too awful either.
I’m quite interested!
My favorite dinner consisted of jambalaya, a Louisiana-brewed beer, and bread pudding studded with raisins and dipped in bourbon sauce, all of which I enjoyed immensely.
They also prepared some of the nicest beignets I’ve ever had, although it was more of a breakfast treat than anything else.
Beignets served with chicory coffee, for a truly authentic New Orleans finish, would be ideal.
That, on the other hand, is more of a breakfast item than a dessert.
If you’re feeling very adventurous, try it with a touch of bourbon.
That brings me to bread pudding – this particular recipe (which was a contest winner!) is also citrus-flavored.
When it comes to citrus, I agree with nutcakes.
For those who are not fans of shellfish, there is something filling available.
