In the event that a Survivor television program were to air with nutritionists as participants, what foods would they take in their bags to keep them nourished? As I imagined myself trapped on a tropical island, I thought about the items I would pick to bring with me if I knew I was going to be stuck there (in mydreams, my island has a resort, is equipped with the comforts of home, and located somewhere idyllic like the South Pacific). Of course, there would be no resort on a reality program – just an oasis of floral beauty with fresh water appropriate for drinking and a plethora of fish to be found in the sea.

Just the Basics

Because my paradise island is equipped with readily available fresh running water, I will not be required to bring the most basic of necessities with me. In order to fulfill my sweet craving and provide a source of vitamin A, mango trees would be readily accessible on the island. Seafood such as fresh fish from the sea would supply a significant amount of low-fat protein as well as cardio-protective omega-3 fatty acids. Making a spear from a branch and adding a point fashioned from a piece of treasure I’ve discovered on the island is what I imagine myself doing.

How to Survive on A Desert Island

What is the best way to survive on a desert island? We consulted with a local Islander expert! My name is Joel Gallagher, and I’m the commander-in-chief of Reaper Feed. It was last year that I joined the Let’s Buy an Island team, and I haven’t looked back since! For the price of a cup of coffee, I wrote a book a few months ago called theMilitary Grade Travel Guide, which delivers potentially life-saving travel advice in an increasingly hazardous world. Following the publication of the book, I was approached by the team at LBI and asked to write an essay on how to live on a desert island, which I gladly agreed to do for them.

  2. When their food and water supplies ran out after a year of self-imposed seclusion, the couple’s trip quickly turned sour, leaving them isolated and fearing death until they were rescued by local islanders.
  3. Eventually, the explorers ran out of supplies, and in despair, the majority of the men escaped across the icy sea in an attempt to get assistance.
  4. Ada was left alone with the only surviving member of the gang, and she cared for him until he died of natural causes.
  5. Because she was need to defend against Polar Bears, she became proficient with a rifle.
  6. Stunning tales, but I hope none of you who are reading this ever find yourselves alone on a lonely island, unless, of course, you are on Islandia, where there is a never-ending supply of drink options.
  7. Finding fresh drinking water, shelter, and finally rescue are just a few of the methods available.

1. STOP

STOP is an acronym that stands for “Stop, Think, Observe, and Plan.” Even the most terrible events in life may be conquered if one maintains one’s composure. Make every effort to keep your thoughts quiet and your breathing regular. Assure yourself that you will get out of the situation safely and that this is only a temporary predicament. You’re stranded on an island, and you have no way of knowing when aid is going to arrive. Avoid panicking and begin the following survival actions in the order of importance.

  1. Find or create a supply of drinking water
  2. Find or construct a shelter
  3. Start a fire
  4. Send out rescue signals
  5. Locate a source of food. Make fishing equipment to capture food

2. Finding a source of drinking Water

It’s no secret that water is essential for living in every environment. You may survive for around three weeks without food, but if you do not have access to appropriate drinking water, which is especially important in hot climates, you will die in a terrible manner within three days. Water sources may be found in a number of locations and situations. As you travel deeper inwards, you will have a much higher chance of finding a supply of fresh drinking water, such as waterfalls and streams, which would be much more difficult to come by on the outside sections of the island.

Raindrops may be funneled into containers by using large leaves as funnels.

In the case that you are unable to locate a source of freshwater and are subjected to prolonged periods of dry weather, your next step should be to construct a solar water still, as explained here.

  • Step 1: Dig a hole in the sand towards the edge of the trees and fill it with water. You want to dig a hole that is deep enough so the hole is contained inside the wet sand underneath it. Placing a container in the center of the hole is Step 2. The next step is to fill up any gaps around the container with damp materials such as wet leaves. Step 4: Cover the hole with a plastic sheet and secure it in place with bigger pebbles placed around the perimeter of the hole. 5. Place a tiny rock in the center of the plastic, right above the container, and tape it in place. Condensation will form on the bottom of the plastic and will flow into the center. Step 6: Dripping water will be collected in the container, filling it with distilled drinking water.

3. Find or Build Yourself a Shelter

Following the acquisition of water, the following step in your survival strategy should be the construction of a suitable shelter to shield oneself from the elements. A adequate shelter in the form of a Tepee may be erected using a simple four-stage plan, which includes the following steps:

  • During the first stage, explore the island and collect around 20 long and thick branches. The structural integrity of your Tepee will be improved by using thicker branches. Take advantage of the opportunity to gather any dense foliage you can
  • Putting three of the longest branches into the ground to form a tripod structure is the second stage. Stage 3: Using the remaining branches, arrange them around the tripod to make a tight circle with a tiny opening in the center to act as an entry point. Stage 4: Using the vegetation you collected, wrap the sticks in it to form a protective barrier from the weather.

4. Build a Fire

Once you’ve gotten situated into your new home, which shouldn’t take long, the next step is to construct yourself a roaring fire to keep you warm throughout the winter months. The process of lighting a fire without the typical tools for doing so may appear difficult at first, but it is actually not that difficult at all. Fires may be used for a variety of purposes, including cooking food, boiling water, and sending out a distress signal that can be seen by airplanes flying overhead or ships and people thousands of miles away.

  • Stage 1: Gather a substantial amount of dry tinder as well as a variety of different-sized dry sticks
  • Using your Tepee-building talents, it’s time to construct a little structure out of the smaller branches and set it in the center of the area where you want your fire to be. Stage 3: Locate a piece of wood and carve a groove into the bottom of it. Stage 4: Place some tinder at one end of the rope that you will use to light the fire. Stage 5: Using a firm stick, plow the end of the stick up and down the groove to generate friction. Stage 6: The tinder will begin to smolder, and you should blow on it to assist it burn. The seventh step is to gently blow on the fire to foster its growth while simultaneously adding smaller branches and twigs on top of it.

5. Locating Food

If you find yourself on a desert island, fish will most likely be your only source of sustenance. If you don’t care for fish, it’s time to buck up and eat like a caveman. In such circumstances, spearfishing is the most effective method of catching fish. A spear may be built from a long branch that you discover on the island; sharpen the end and make sure it is long and weighted enough to throw; bind stones to the spear with twine or shoelaces to keep it from flying away. You will have the best chance of catching fish on an island if you look for it along the shore in shallow water near the beach.

Make sure the water isn’t too deep and move carefully so as not to frighten them if you have no other alternative than to walk in it.

Make a quick movement with your arm and hurl the spear. Always aim for the fish’s head while catching it. For the first few times, it will be difficult, but with perseverance and practice, you will be able to spear your meal in no time.

6. Be Aware of Predators on the Island

This stage is dependent on the place in which you find yourself trapped, however predators might pose a very real and present risk if you find yourself stranded on an island, as Ada Blackjack discovered to her cost. As a result, you must be extremely conscientious of the types of animals and critters with whom you are sharing your new temporary home. Never allow yourself to become too comfortable if you believe the island may be home to dangerous animals, and always keep an eye out for any monsters that may be pursuing you.

Keeping the spear you use for fishing near by and making a knife from shorter branches can help you survive on land.

If you go out into deep water, you are entering the domain of a predator, and your chances of survival are quite slim if you are attacked.

7. Getting Rescued

In the event that you are rescued, the odds are high that your disappearance will have launched an official manhunt for you. Keep in mind, however, that if you are still missing after a specified amount of time has passed, the official search may be called off. For example, individuals have been left to fend for themselves on an island for up to 18 years in the past, like in the instance of Juana Maria in 1853.
