Abstract

While everyone is familiar with the term “comfort foods,” many people are unfamiliar with what they are and what impact, if any, they have on our mood. In this review, I outline the evidence on this crucial issue, emphasizing the role that comfort foods play in easing loneliness by stimulating good thoughts of earlier social encounters, at least among those who are firmly bonded to their partners or families. Also discussed is the information pertaining to individual variances in the kind of food that are most likely to be considered comfort food by different parts of the population.

Following such findings, several notable headlines have suggested that the very concept of comfort food is a fiction, rather than a reality.

In some ways, this offers a challenge for all of the marketers out there who are eager to identify their goods with the alluring concept of comfort food.

Comfort Food Without the Guilt

Nobody can resist piping hot macaroni and cheese with a crunchy golden-brown crust, chewy chocolate chip cookies fresh from the oven, or a pile of fluffy white mashed potatoes topped with a puddle of warm melted butter. Comfort foods provide us with comfort and nourishment, but they often come with a high nutritional price tag: They’re often heavy in fat, particularly saturated fat, calories, and, occasionally, sugar. If we merely refrain from soothing ourselves with the foods we want, is this the best solution?

“I do not believe that we should deprive ourselves of foods that we have strong emotional links to,” Reeves adds.

“If we starve ourselves, we’ll only want to consume more and more,” says the author. To avoid overindulging in our favorite comfort foods, Reeves recommends that we consume them in moderation – especially when these meals are heavy in calories and fat.

2 Ways Comfort Foods Help

Is it possible to get any benefit out of consuming comfort foods? Yes, without a doubt! There are at least two ways in which comfort foods might be beneficial to your health: first, they can relieve stress.

  • Many popular comfort meals have great nutritional value, especially when they’ve been modified to be lower in fat and sugar and richer in fiber and other key nutrients, as has been done in recent years. Higher-fiber breads, lean meats, and stews and casseroles that incorporate veggies are all good choices for healthy comfort food.
  • The nutritional worth of many popular comfort meals has been demonstrated, particularly when they have been reformulated to be lower in fat and sugar but richer in fiber and other essential elements. Increased-fiber breads, lean meats, and vegetable-based stews and casseroles are all good choices for healthy comfort meals

“Comfort foods, on the other hand, can become addictive,” says Mary Dallman, PhD, one of the UCSF researchers. The negative of consuming them after stress is that these extra calories are mostly channeled into the harmful abdominal fat pads, which is not good for one’s overall health. Without ingesting all of those additional calories and fat, it is feasible to provide yourself with some comfort. Here are four suggestions for savoring comfort food without sacrificing your fitness goals:

  • Prepare a version of your favorite comfort meal that is reduced in calories, fat, salt, and sugar wherever feasible. (“Comfort Food Makeovers,” a new cookbook I’ve created that contains a slew of these nutritionally refined recipes
  • Seek for it at your preferred online bookshop.”
  • If you’re actually hungry for comfort food, consume it, then stop eating when you’re satisfied, rather than satisfied yet filled Consume your comfort foods as part of a normal meal rather than as a snack consumed on the spur of the moment to reduce the likelihood that you are eating for emotional reasons. Make your delicious comfort meals more nutritious by include veggies or beans wherever feasible in the preparation process. When making sweet comfort foods, increase the amount of fruit you use, lower the amount of sugar you use (or use half sugar substitute), reduce the amount of oil you use by a third or more, and use whole wheat flour for half of the recipe when possible.

Our Favorite Comfort Foods

Prepare your favorite comfort meal with less calories, fat, salt, and sugar when it is at all possible to do so. (I’ve created a new cookbook, Comfort Food Makeovers, that’s full of these nutritionally fine-tuned recipes; check for it at your local bookstore or on Amazon.com. ; If you’re actually hungry for comfort food, consume it, and stop eating when you’re satisfied, rather than satisfied and stuffed; Take pleasure in your comfort foods as part of a regular meal rather than as an after-dinner snack to reduce the likelihood that you’re eating for emotional reasons.

When making sweet comfort foods, increase the amount of fruit you use, lower the amount of sugar you use (or use half sugar substitute), cut the amount of fat you use by a third or more, and use whole wheat flour for half of the recipe when possible.

Light Rosti with Mushrooms and Onions

1 cup “starchy items with no more than 1 teaspoon of fat” + 1/2 cup “vegetables without additional fat” OR 1 “frozen dinnerlight, pasta or rice dish with chicken or fish or vegetarian with lite sauce” + 1 ounce normal cheese

By utilizing frozen shredded hash browns, I was able to eliminate the stages of cooking and shredding the potatoes. I also made this dish lighter by reducing the amount of butter used and substituting olive oil; substituting turkey bacon for sausage; and substituting reduced-fat cheese for normal cheese. It’s OK to substitute roughly 1/2 cup of lean, finely chopped ham for the turkey bacon if you like. 8 cups shredded hash browns from the freezer 1 teaspoon of table salt a total of six slices Louis Rich turkey bacon is a delicacy (or similar) 1 cup finely minced onion 1 stem fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon dried thyme (optional) 2 cups of raw mushrooms, chopped 4 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil Sliced Jarlsberg Light cheese (about 4 ounces) into thin slices (or substitute gruyere)

  • In a microwave-safe covered container, place frozen hash browns
  • Cover with 1/2 cup water and microwave on HIGH until cooked, about 2 minutes (about 15 minutes). Drain the water, sprinkle it with salt, and leave it away to cool a bit. Canola oil should be sprayed into a big nonstick skillet. Fry the turkey bacon in a skillet over medium heat until it is fairly crisp. Allow to cool on a paper towel before crumbling into bits. Cooking spray made from canola or olive oil should be used in the same frying pan. Cook until the mushrooms and onions are tender, about 5 minutes (about 5 minutes.) Remove the pan from the heat and whisk in the bacon pieces and shredded potatoes until combined. In a small nonstick frying pan, heat a teaspoon of olive oil over high heat until shimmering. 1 cup of the potato mixture should be placed in the center of the baking pan. Make a round, flat cake out of it by flattening it with a spatula. As soon as the bottom has browned well (approximately 2 minutes), turn it over and proceed to cook the underside while adding an ounce of sliced cheese to the top. As soon as the underside is gently browned, either flip the Rosti onto a dinner plate or finish melting the cheese by placing the skillet in the broiler for a few seconds
  • This technique should be repeated with the remaining potato mixture, olive oil, and cheese.

This recipe makes 4-6 servings. Whether it’s consuming an entire bag of chips out of boredom or consuming cookie after cookie while studying for a huge test, we’ve all been there before. However, when done frequently — and especially when done without realizing it — emotional eating may have a negative impact on one’s weight, health, and general well-being. Many of us do not realize the link between what we eat and how we are feeling.

One of the most common misconceptions regarding emotional eating is that it is triggered by unpleasant emotions.

Emotional eating, on the other hand, can be associated with pleasant sentiments as well, such as the romanticism of sharing dessert on Valentine’s Day or the joy of a holiday feast.

In most cases, however, it is the myriad small everyday pressures that lead someone to seek solace or distraction in food.

If a child is offered cookies as a means of calming down, he or she may come to associate cookies with comfort.
