Why You Should Eat Dessert for Breakfast—Really!
When you’re trying to eat healthy, dessert is probably the last item on your to-do list, right? What if I told you that everything you thought you knew was wrong? Treating yourself to dessert for breakfast is the new method to stay satisfied throughout the day and avoid overindulging in snacking. It’s hard to believe, but I decided to give this dessert-first fad a go for myself and report back.
The science: How it all works
Changing your eating habits is a significant step. However, there is some evidence to suggest that having dessert for breakfast may assist to keep hunger at bay for a significant portion of the day, according to the researchers. According to a research conducted by the Endocrine Society, having a 600-calorie high-carb breakfast that includes a small dessert such as a sweet cookie or chocolate may aid to enhance weight reduction results by increasing metabolism. A study involving two groups of volunteers was conducted over an eight-month period to compare the results of those who consumed a low-carb breakfast and those who consumed a high-carb meal instead.
People who consumed a greater caloric and carbohydrate intake were more successful at losing weight and keeping it off than those who consumed a lower caloric and carb intake.
The test: Eating dessert for breakfast
Getting out of bed and into whatever clothing I can find is my typical morning ritual, followed by a quick cup of coffee before rushing out the door to go to work. When it comes to eating, it’s generally the last thing on my mind, especially when it comes to dessert. I had to do a little meal planning the night before in order to get myself ready for breakfast, which is a meal that I generally avoid. I went with something straightforward that was both carb-heavy and sweet: pancakes, chocolate chips, and a generous amount of maple syrup.
- do you know which pancake mix was rated the finest by our Test Kitchen?).
- It’s all in the name of science!
- In the wee hours of the morning, when my alarm awakened me from an extended nap, I stumbled into the kitchen, sleepy-eyed and uninterested in the prospect of devouring a whole stack of pancakes.
- The first few bites were a touch too sweet for my taste at that hour, but I quickly got over it and devoured the entire thing.
The results: Curbing my hunger pangs
My typical weekday looks something like this: I arrive at the workplace, pour another cup of coffee, and take a seat with a cookie (which is normally my first food of the day). My eating schedule is as follows: I eat at approximately every hour, on the hour. Mini cheese biscuits, chips, fruit, oat bars, chocolate, and whatever else I can get my hands on are some of my go-to snack foods. This time, I walked into the workplace and made myself a cup of coffee before getting to work. It wasn’t until 12:35 p.m.
I took a quick lunch of a baked potato and beans before returning to my desk to continue working.
Surprisingly, the day flew by, and I barely had time to think about eating (except in one weak moment when a co-worker offered me some chips; I had three). I didn’t feel the urge to eat anything else until I came home and started preparing my evening meal.
Conclusion
Of course, it’s possible that the placebo effect had a role: Throughout the day, I was very conscious of the fact that I’d consumed a substantial amount of sweet breakfast far too early. Having dessert for breakfast, on the other hand, had a significant influence on my overall eating patterns. I no longer felt the need to continually load up on junk food and eat anything I could get my hands on to satisfy my hunger. As an alternative, I kept to real meals and went about my business. This experiment, at least in my opinion, was a resounding success.
Yes, assuming I can manage to drag myself out of bed each morning at a reasonable hour.

We need to call American breakfast what it often is: dessert
For many people in the United States, breakfast is little more than a disguised dessert, as illustrated by this tweet from author and scholar Alan Levinovitz: Breakfast items transformed into desserts include: Cupcakes are the same as muffins. a smoothie is the same as a milkshake Yogurt + granola = streusel on top of the yogurt Waffles are a type of cookie. Alan Levinovitz (@AlanLevinovitz) is a Twitter user. The 8th of July is a public holiday in the United States. Look no farther than the IHOP menu, where dessert for breakfast is the order of the day.
- Keep in mind that the government suggests that no more than 12 teaspoons of sugar per person per day be consumed by an individual (though the average Americanconsumes23.) You don’t have to travel to IHOP to receive a day’s worth of sugar in your morning breakfast, but you might want to.
- And what about yogurt?
- Despite this, firms such as Yoplait and Chobani have developed yogurt empires in America by saturating their products with sugar.
- And if you think granola is any more nutritious than other cereals, think again.
Kevin Quealy and Margot Sanger-Katz, writers for the New York Times, noted that “granola bars were the meal that evoked the most difference of opinion between professionals and the general people.” “Around 70% of Americans considered it healthy, while just fewer than 30% of dietitians did,” according to the study.
- The crunchy dish, which was made famous by hippies, was deemed unhealthy by less than half of the experts polled.
- The majority of it has surprisingly high levels of calories and sugar, particularly when consumed in the proportions that individuals are prone to consume.
- (1/4 cup, or 4 tablespoons, for certain brands, is a single serving.) (2) Many people consume far more than that in a single sitting, which implies that one bowl of cereal might have 600 calories or more.
- Numerous investigations from health advocacy organizations such as the Environmental Working Group have highlighted the excessive quantity of sugar found in commonplace cereals such as Lucky Charms and Honey Smacks.
- Cheerios Protein, with its four teaspoons of sugar, has far more sugar than a normal breakfast cereal targeted to children, such as Trix or Frosted Flakes, according to Michael Jacobson, head of the Cheerios Protein Institute (CSPI).
“They should actually call the product Cheerios Sugar,” says the author. While this is true, a serving of Honey Nut Cheerios has more sugar than three Chips Ahoy cookies combined. Cookies crumbled and thrown into a bowl: That is how many cereals should be seen in the first place.
Breakfast doesn’t have to be dessert
According to Marion Nestle, a food policy and nutrition expert, there are several cereals available that look and taste nothing like dessert — and have sufficient of fiber to keep you full while containing little or no added sugar. A useful ranking of cereals based on their nutritional value is available from the Food Advertising to Children and Teens Score project (see Resources). In a similar vein, certain yogurts are far healthier than others. It has been my pleasure to write about Siggi’s, an Icelandic yogurt that was developed in reaction to the excessively sugary choices available in American stores.
- The most reliable option is plain yogurt from any brand, and it’s generally a good idea to avoid yogurts with names like Key lime pie and Philly cheesecake, which are both flavored.
- Because of their high protein and fat content, they are also quite filling.
- Alternatively, you could choose to try something altogether different.
- In Japan, for example, breakfast is frequently comprised of a filling combination of fish, rice, and miso soup.
- And don’t forget that not everyone is required to consume a morning meal.
- Update/Correction: In our graphic, we’ve updated the food items with serving size information, and the quantity of Oreos has been adjusted to reflect the amount of regular-size cookies.
r/Cooking – Why and how did breakfast become “sweet”?
I’m sure that’s not the case in other countries, but why is it that breakfast in the United States and Canada is often sweet – pancakes, waffles, sugary cereal, muffins, doughnuts, and so on? In my childhood, I assumed that I didn’t like eating breakfast simply because I don’t care for sweet foods. Then I understood that I could eat whatever the hell I wanted for breakfast and that arbitrary norms weren’t actually that important after all. I was shocked. Breakfast is become one of my favorite meals.
- Usually, it’s a lovely green salad with a sardine toast on the side to start the meal.
- However, it makes me wonder why so many breakfasts are sugary in the first place.
- When I was fresh out of university, I worked as a medical receptionist while still attending graduate school, and it was a great experience.
- My coworker glanced at me and inquired whether that was my breakfast, to which I said affirmatively.
When she was through, she stated something along the lines of “Such a meal is something I would never allow my children to eat in my house. Cereal and toast are the staples of the morning meal.” I mean, why?! Lmfao.

Most breakfast in the USA is actually dessert
The amount of sugar and fat in most breakfast items is equivalent to that of a sweet treat! Breakfast foods that are often consumed and that many people perceive to be healthy are really rather unhealthy. If you begin your day with these meals, it may be hard to shed weight or improve your health in the long run. In addition to preventing fat burning, the high sugar level increases cravings and hunger for most of the rest of the day. Fruit juice, flavored yogurt, oats, cereal, and toast with sweet toppings are some of the common morning items that many people consume to get their day started.
- Over the course of several years, the public has been educated about how much sugar is included in most morning cereals, resulting in a decline in cereal sales.
- Six and a half teaspoons is the correct amount of sugar.
- When you combine it with a glass of orange juice, you have a sugar bomb on your hands.
- A granola bar is approximately as satiating as a candy bar, and most people are still hungry an hour after eating one, according to research.
- Plain, unflavored yogurt is a nutritious food; but, when fruit or vanilla are added, a significant amount of sugar is added in most circumstances.
- Sugar and fat levels in muffins, raisin toast, smoothies, and banana bread (which is actually just cake) are comparable to those found in the usual dessert.
- It’s acceptable to indulge in these meals on occasion if you really love them, but if you’re attempting to lose weight and keep your desires under control, these foods will jeopardize your attempts to achieve your goals.
Eggs, whey protein powder, and supper leftovers are all good alternatives for a nutritious breakfast. Please see my new weight loss book, “I can’t lose weight and I don’t know why,” for additional information.
Scientific proof that Americans basically eat dessert for breakfast – The Daily Gazette
On most mornings at home, we go through the same motions of getting ready, going to the kitchen, and putting some brand name cereal into a bowl while still groggy from the night before. That cereal in your bowl may have around 18 grams of added sugar, which is something you certainly wouldn’t want to think about before drinking your first cup of coffee in the morning. The traditional American breakfast consists primarily of processed foods such as toaster pastries, waffles, and cereals, all of which are high in added sugars and low in nutritional value.
- As a result, we discovered traditional breakfasts from nine different nations and compared them to see how individuals throughout the world begin their nutritious day.
- However, the amounts of different types of nourishment, such as fats, sugar, and protein, varied significantly from one nation to the next.
- If all of England’s residents suddenly decided to have a typical English breakfast every day, one that has a staggering 855 calories and more than 2,000 grams of salt, the country would most certainly be facing a huge public health catastrophe, according to the World Health Organization.
- If you’re in the Philippines, for example, your breakfast could include a couple wonderfully salty slices of Spam on the side.
- People’s breakfast plates soon were dominated by processed meat, which finally displaced more traditional meats.
- According to the USDA, added sugars should account for no more than 10% of your daily calorie consumption.
- The cliche “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” has been proven to be inaccurate, and as a result, we can all feel a little less guilty about the carbs we consume in the morning.

- Take, for example, the breakfast from the Philippines that we featured, which includes a few wonderfully salty slices of Spam.
- However, while the use of Spam would nudge a Filipino meal toward the unhealthy end of the spectrum of breakfasts that we examined, the American breakfast got the prize for being the most nutritious.
- With its sugary cereal, manufactured waffles and syrup, and orange juice, the typical American breakfast seen in our film included 7.46 percent of the recommended daily calorie intake.
- However, 80 grams of added sugar in a single meal is not a healthy option.
Breakfast Foods That Are Actually Dessert
When it comes to breakfast, we here at HuffPost Taste aren’t messing around. Every single artery-clogging meal is a favorite of ours. Everything about this meal is just perfect: the bacon, the sausage, the pancakes, and the French toast. Jelly donuts have captured our hearts. We would be completely lost if we didn’t have our chicken and waffles. Furthermore, a meal that did not include at the very least the option of biscuits and gravy would be just bizarre. However, we must be really honest in this situation.

- Cinnamon Rolls, perhaps?

Donuts Are Not Breakfast Food
Everything about a warm, glazed doughnut is great in this world, and there is nothing better. A simple sugar or chocolate glaze, or something a little more adventurous like maple bacon or Fruity Pebbles, is all you really need. You may purchase your doughnut in a variety of sizes, including super-sized, mini-sized, and the “bread” of a sandwich (looking at youstate fairs). Donuts, on the other hand, are not morning items, according to my strong stance on the subject. I realize this is a controversial viewpoint, but if you consider the following arguments, you may come to agree with me.
1. There’s No Nutritional Benefit
Donuts are among the most delectable foods on the planet, but they, like many other delectable foods such as soda and fried chicken, are not always good for you. Each doughnut has a few hundred calories in and of themselves. The calories in a Dunkin’ Donuts jelly-filled doughnut are 221 calories per donut that you consume. It is true that you require calories, but there are several alternative options for obtaining the calories you require in the morning that can help keep you satisfied until your next meal.
This gorgeous sparkling glaze also contains a lot of sugar, which makes it even more delicious.
2. Donuts Do Not Start Your Day
If you’re eating a doughnut in the morning because you’re hoping to get a rush of energy from it, reconsider your strategy. When you have an excessive amount of donuts as your first meal, you are unlikely to have the stamina and power to make it through to lunch without eating something else. A food, such as another doughnut, might be appropriate. A good explanation exists for the adage that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” Eating breakfast first thing in the morning signals to your body that you are ready to jumpstart your metabolism and burn more calories throughout the rest of the day.
Make no mistake: don’t start out by putting a handful of sugar in your body and expecting to be your most productive self.
3. They’re Just Better for Dessert
Is it possible that you’ve gone to a wedding, a recruiting event, or any other major gathering where a doughnut wall was present? If looking at all that glistening glaze and delectable toppings wasn’t the nicest part of your day, tell me what was. If you’re looking for a dessert, donuts are just fantastic. Consider it a reward for yourself at the end of the day rather than at the start of the day, as is customary. In addition to being deliciously sweet and sugary, donuts have the ability to put us in a cheerful frame of mind, as previously said.
Donuts are usually a crowd pleaser, whether in meetings, in class, or at parties. They’re a win-win situation, but they’re not suitable for breakfast. To summarize, take your time in the morning, eat your nutritious items, and reserve the chocolate glaze and rainbow sprinkles for later.
10 Common Breakfasts and How to Make Them Healthier
Despite the fact that breakfast is frequently referred to as the most essential meal of the day, the importance of your morning meal is dependent on what you consume. A nutritious breakfast should contain a range of nutrient-dense foods that are high in fiber, protein, and healthy fats to help you get your day started on the right track. Unfortunately, many of the most popular breakfast foods are highly processed and/or deficient in these essential vitamins and minerals. Take a look at these 10 healthy ways to make some of the most popular breakfast items, such as waffles, muffins, and toast, a little more nutritious and get your day started on the right foot.
1. Breakfast cereals
While breakfast cereals are frequently seen as a healthy choice for both children and adults, many varieties are highly processed and high in refined grains as well as added sugars and other additives. Eating an excessive amount of added sugar may increase the risk of developing a range of chronic health disorders, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and liver disease ( 1 ). Refined grains are similarly lower in fiber than unrefined grains. Fiber is an important nutrient because it helps you feel more full after you consume a meal ( 2 ).
Look for morning cereals that are low in sugar and produced from whole grains, such as oats, brown rice, or wheat bran, in order to get the most nutritional value.
summary Several morning cereals are highly processed and high in refined grains and sugar, whereas others are low in both.
2. Pancakes and waffles
Whether at home or at a restaurant, pancakes and waffles are popular choices for weekend morning meals. Despite the fact that they include more protein than some other breakfast dishes, pancakes and waffles are often cooked using white flour, which is a processed grain that does not contain a significant amount of fiber. As an extra sugar source, maple-flavored pancake syrup is commonly used to top pancakes and waffles, which contains high-fructose corn syrup and hence contains a significant amount of sugar.
Make pancakes or waffles using whole grains or nuts instead of white flour to add a healthy touch to your breakfast.
Increasing the consumption of plant-based whole meals high in fiber has been associated to lower insulin resistance ( 6 ).
summary Pancakes and waffles are frequently cooked with refined flour and topped with syrup to create a sweet treat. Instead of white flour, use whole-grain or nut flour, and top your baked goods with nutritious toppings such as fresh fruit, yogurt, or a drizzle of pure maple syrup.
3. Toast with margarine
It may appear that toast covered with margarine is a traditional breakfast option. White bread, on the other hand, is manufactured from refined flour, which means that it is deficient in fiber and key nutrients. Furthermore, certain forms of margarine include trans fats, a type of fat that has been shown to cause inflammation and contribute to heart disease in some studies ( 7 ). Instead, pick whole wheat bread whenever feasible, and healthy toppings for your toast, such as sliced avocados, nut butter, hummus, or ricotta, will make your toast taste even better.
It is possible to have a healthy breakfast by using whole wheat bread and selecting healthier toppings for sandwiches.
4. Muffins
Typically, muffins are produced with refined flour, vegetable oils, eggs, and sugar, but they can also be made from other ingredients. Muffins served in bakeries, coffee shops, and grocery stores are frequently extremely big, resulting in a higher concentration of added sugar and calories than the majority of consumers would anticipate. In fact, a chocolate chip muffin from a prominent coffee chain contains 36 grams of added sugar (equivalent to 9 teaspoons) more than a chocolate frosted doughnut from the same establishment (8,9) There are a plethora of healthy muffin recipes accessible online that you can create at home using components such as whole wheat flour, fresh fruit, and Greek yogurt, amongst other things.
summary Muffins are often heavy in refined flour, calories, and sugar, and they are also high in fat.
5. Fruit juice
While fruit juice may appear to be a simple method to increase your fruit intake, many fruit drinks on the market actually contain very little fruit and are sweetened with sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, which is not healthy. Although 100% fruit juices have more nutrients than 100% fruit juices, they frequently contain significant quantities of natural sugar and lack the fiber that you would receive from eating entire fruits, which helps you stay fuller for longer ( 10 ). Rather than juice, go for whole fruits instead, and if you enjoy juice, consider diluting it with water or seltzer to help lower the amount of sugar in your cup.
SummaryFruit juice contains a lot of sugar and should only be consumed in small amounts.
6. Toaster pastries
Pastries baked in a toaster oven are an unquestionably quick and simple breakfast alternative. They are, however, heavily processed, and often contain refined flour as well as added sugar. Furthermore, they are poor in protein, which is a vital food that may aid in the reduction of hunger and the enhancement of sensations of fullness (11). For example, several firms have begun providing toaster pastries that are strong in protein and low in added sugar, which might be considered a healthier option to many popular brand names.
summary Toasted pastries are heavy in sugar and refined carbohydrates, but they are lacking in protein and fiber. Some firms offer healthier options, or you may try creating your own at home if you want to save money.
7. Scones with jam and cream
Scones covered with jam are more like a dessert than a nutritious breakfast due to their high sugar and calorie content. Scones are produced by combining refined wheat flour, butter, and sugar, along with any flavorings that you like. After that, the dough is molded and cooked. They’re often served with whipped cream and jam or jelly on top. At the end of the day, you’ll have a high-calorie, sweet breakfast that’s low in fiber and protein. Fiber has been found to provide a variety of advantages, including the ability to keep your blood sugar levels within a healthy range.
While scones should not be considered a mainstay in your morning meal, they may be incorporated into a healthy, well-balanced diet and enjoyed in little amounts.
summary Scones covered with cream and jam have a lot of sugar and calories, but also have a lot of fiber in them.
8. Sweetened yogurt
Healthy and well-balanced breakfast options include plain Greek yogurt with fresh berries, which is an excellent example. A large number of popular variants of fat-free, flavored yogurt include significant amounts of added sugar, with some variations containing about 60 percent the amount of sugar found in vanilla ice cream ( 13 , 14 ). Aside from that, you may be tempted to purchase fat-free yogurt in order to keep calories down, but fat is a vital nutrient since it helps to slow the emptying of your stomach, which allows you to feel fuller for longer periods of time ( 15 ).
Instead of purchasing yogurt that has been sweetened with sugar, go for plain yogurt and flavor it with delicious ingredients such as fresh fruit, nuts, and seeds to make it more flavorful.
Instead of sugary yogurt, choose for unsweetened yogurt, which can be readily sweetened by adding your favorite toppings.
9. Granola bars
Although granola bars may appear to be healthy breakfast alternatives, they are often nutritionally identical to candy bars in terms of calories and sugar. According to studies (16 and 17), many granola bars have just 1–3 grams of fiber per serving, and they are also low in protein, with only a few grams per serving (16, 17). Aside from that, some of the most popular products contain a combination of added sugars including sugar, corn syrup, and honey, in addition to other components such as chocolate chips or dried fruit.
Check labels to check if the granola bars contain added sugars and are created from high-nutrient foods such as oats, almonds and seeds.
summary Numerous granola bars include a lot of sugar, but they are also poor in fiber and protein. Instead, consider low-sugar granola bars produced from nutrient-dense ingredients. You may even experiment with making your own granola bars from scratch.
10. Processed gluten-free breakfast foods
Diets that are gluten-free have grown increasingly popular in recent years as a result of growing worry about the possible harmful health consequences of gluten ( 19 ). However, while removing gluten has no negative consequences, many gluten-free meals are highly processed and made with refined components such as rice, potatoes, and tapioca, which can lead to blood sugar spikes and crashes ( 20 ). Aside from that, gluten-free breakfast dishes such as pancakes, muffins, and other baked goods are often low in protein and fiber, comparable to the traditional wheat-based versions of these meals.
summary Apart from having low protein and fiber content, many gluten-free packaged goods have a high degree of processing and refinement.
With a substantial serving of fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals, breakfast has the ability to set you up for a successful day at the office.
Make use of some of the nutritious choices listed above to give your morning meal a nutritional boost.

Not only are they brightly colored, but they are also packed with acidic cranberries and the softest sweet dough you’ve ever tasted.

Chocolate chip pancakes could possibly be the most amazing morning item on the planet. Everyone like them because they are filling, sweet, and really flavorful.

Although it may seem odd, using a glass container for this recipe might improve the flavor of yogurt and cereal. After all, we consume food via our eyes! These, on the other hand, are creamy, fruity, and crisp in every single bite.
