How To Make Apple Crisp Dessert With Pie Filling

Easy Apple Crisp with Pie Filling

The use of pie filling is a wonderful option since it allows for a quick and easy preparation. I made a slight modification to the topping by substituting 3/4 cup flour for 1 1/4 cup oats. I also used 3/4 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup walnuts in addition to the rest of the ingredients. Warm it up and serve it with ice cream, wonderful!

Apple Crumble (Apple Crisp)

Apple Crumble is one of those desserts that you wouldn’t mind eating for every meal of the day if you had it every day! Soft cinnamon-spiced apples, brown sugar, and buttery crispy baked oats make up this delicious dessert. The quick and easy way to make apple pie that is full of flavor and requires little work.

APPLE CRUMBLE OR APPLE CRISP

In the past, most apple crumbles (or apple crisps, depending on where you are in the world) have been either too dry on the inside or too watery, resulting in a super soggy crumb topping instead of a CRISPY topping. This recipe is different. An incredible oatmeal cookie-like crumble tops a soft apple pie filling that has baked in a naturally occurring syrup for a decadent dessert. Make sure to serve with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream and watch as it melts all over your hot crumble. There is SO MUCH DELICIOUS THICK SYRUP on the INSIDE that it is ridiculously delicious!

HOW DO YOU MAKE APPLE CRUMBLE?

First and foremost, you’ll need to slice up your apples. Slice your apples finely to ensure that they cook all the way through, resulting in a soft, delicate apple filling. If you want them exactly thin, you may use a mandolin to achieve this. They become really sensitive and mushy, almost melting in your lips as you bite through them. Increase the thickness of the slices for a little crunchier filling. Bake until the crumble topping is brown and crispy, around 20 minutes after you’ve finished mixing the crumble ingredients.

HOW DO YOU MAKE APPLE CRISP TOPPING?

Prepare your crumble topping using materials that I KNOW you already have in your kitchen cupboards, such as:

  • The finest oats are those that cook quickly. Use rolled oats for a chewier topping
  • Otherwise, use quick oats. Flour is available in two varieties: plain and all-purpose. Alternatively, whole wheat or wholemeal flour can be used. Brown sugar that is not too dark. Dark brown sugar can be used to achieve a more intense molasses flavor. Cinnamon that has been ground. You may also use ground cloves and/or all spice in your recipe. Please don’t forget to include baking powder in your recipe. This will assist you in recreating the cookie in your topping. The importance of melted butter cannot be overstated.

Before sprinkling the crumble on top of the apples, make sure the butter has soaked into the dry ingredients.

BEST APPLES FOR APPLE CRISP

The taste and sweetness of red apples are what we want, therefore I always use them. Apples such as Red Delicious, Fuji, Ambrosia, Cortland, and Gala are excellent choices. If you like a tarter crisp, use Golden Delicious or Granny Smith apples instead of the Granny Smiths. Alternatively, you may use canned tomatoes if that’s all you have on hand, but I suggest making your own because you have complete control over the flavoring.

BEST APPLE CRUMBLE RECIPE

I do have one final word of caution. Start eating by yourself before anybody else notices what you’re doing, because the entire pan will be gone in seconds if no one else notices. Just keep an eye on your portion. Keep it safe. Keep it hidden. Pretend there aren’t any more. Pay attention to meeeeeeeeee. CAN YOU MAKE APPLE CRISP IN ADVANCE?

Absolutely!

Apple crumble is simple to prepare, and you may get a head start on it by prepping ahead of time. Fill your baking dish with the ingredients and place it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days before cooking.

Tips from the Betty Crocker Kitchens

  • Tip No. 1 “Whenever I was a little girl, my mother always let me to assist her in the kitchen, and the first thing I ever remember preparing was peach crisp. I was around three years old at the time of this occurrence. It was my job to pour the peaches into a baking dish and mix up the crisp topping, after which Mama would hand it off to me to sprinkle it on top of the peaches. The next night at supper, everyone would exclaim over how Christy had cooked the finest peach crisp they had ever tasted! I was ecstatic with myself. Consequently, when I had my own children, it was the first recipe I taught them as well, which was a natural progression.” – Christy Jordan
  • Second suggestion Because it is so precious to all of us for this reason, we like packaging the topping mix and giving it as presents to others so that they may also spend special baking time with their families. I enjoy allowing my children to make gifts for their teachers out of things they find around the house. To make it even more entertaining, we create our own labels for store-bought canned fruit, such as “Brady’s Yummy Peaches” or “Katy’s Rose Pears,” and label them accordingly. I had the kids color these in and stick them on the outside of the trash bin. In an assembly line, we prepare batches of fruit crisp mix, placing it in resealable food-storage plastic bags before cutting strips of fabric with pinking shears and wrapping it around the bags before tying them with ribbons to finish them off. In the end, it makes for a lovely basket. Tips 3: Package the topping mix in a resealable food-storage bag and present it as a gift along with two cans of pie filling. This is a wonderful method to teach youngsters about the joy of giving from the heart and with their own two hands, and it also lets the recipient to spend some quality time baking with their family.

THE BEST APPLE CRISP (+Video)

Using a cinnamon apple pie filling and a butter crumble topping (there is no oatmeal in this recipe), you can make this Easy Apple Crisp in no time.

THE BEST APPLE CRISP

This Apple Crisp recipe is one of my favorite desserts to cook throughout the fall season. I adore it with all of my heart, you guys! This apple crisp is a little different from your typical apple crisp recipe. This recipe does not contain oats. Because my spouse does not care for the brown sugar/oatmeal topping, I had to come up with a different solution. And do you know what else? I actually ended up liking it much more this way!

CAN I USE OTHER PIE FILLINGS?

This recipe is versatile and may be used with virtually any pie filling. It’s been flavored with cherries, peaches, and blueberries. They were all delicious when topped with this sauce. With the exception of the peach pie filling, I just omit the cinnamon from the other pie filling recipes. The addition of a few drops of almond essence to the cherry pie filling will enhance the flavor even more!

HOW DO I MAKE APPLE CRISP WITH FRESH APPLES?

If you want to make your own apple pie filling instead of using canned, you’ll need roughly 5 cups fresh apples (peeled and sliced), 12 cups sugar, 12 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon vanilla essence. Combine the ingredients in a baking dish and bake for 30 minutes. After that, prepare the topping according to the directions listed below.

In a medium-sized mixing basin, whisk together the flour, sugar, and cubed butter. Using a fork or pastry cutter, incorporate all of the ingredients until they are thoroughly blended. Making certain that the butter is “cut” into the mixture. To be honest, there are instances when it is just easier to use your hands. Toss the butter into the flour/sugar mixture until it is crumbly, then remove it from the oven.

Add in the pecans and mix well.

Placing it on the center rack of the oven and baking it for around 25-30 minutes should suffice. It should have a light golden brown color and bouncy in appearance. Spoon into plates or into bowls and top with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, caramel, or any combination of the three!

Easy Apple Crisp (7-minute prep time)

Warm apple crisp, perhaps with a side of potato soup, screams “autumn” more than anything else. Apple crisp is one of my favorite desserts, and I look forward to cooking it every fall. The apples are delicious, but my favorite part of this pie is the “crisp” component, which is the topping. To that end, I modified a recipe I discovered in a local high school cookbook to include a little bit extra topping (if you’re not a topping fanatic like me, simply make the oats, flour, brown sugar, and butter each equal 1 cup in volume).

And the greatest thing is that this dessert can be assembled in only 7 minutes with minimal preparation time! Believe me when I say that I timed myself. Evidently, I’m a complete moron.

Ingredients:

2 cans of apple pie filling (optional). 1 1/2 cups rolled oats1 1/2 cups flour1 1/2 cups brown sugar1 1/2 cups molasses 1 1/2 sticks of butter (about 3/4 cup) a quarter teaspoon of baking powder a quarter teaspoon of baking soda 1 tsp. ground cinnamon (unless your pie filling already has cinnamon in it, then omit)

How To Make Easy Apple Crisp With Pie Filling:

1. Grease a baking pan (I used an 8-inch square pan) and then drop in both cans of apples. 2. Melt 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) of butter in a saucepan. 3. Combine the remaining ingredients in a separate bowl. 4. Place the apples on top of the mixture and spread evenly. The reason why my appears to be “dry” in certain spots is because I attempted to get away with using only one bar of butter. It didn’t work, so I had to melt another 1/2 stick of butter and sprinkle it on top of the melted butter. I would advise simply combining everything together in step three.

Bake for 45 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Serve with vanilla ice cream, if you wish…or just eat it on its own! Delicious and easy!

During this time of year, apple desserts are really popular, and a delicious crisp recipe is one of my favorite sweets to make. So I decided to combine a couple recipes to create an extremely simple caramel apple crisp with pie filling and a brown sugar oatmeal topping that was also delicious. Rather than peeling and slicing fresh apples, this recipe combines the convenience of apple pie filling with a variant of my mother’s renowned crisp topping, saving time and effort. Add in some caramel ice cream topping with cinnamon, and you’ve got yourself a delicious dish in less time!

How to Make Caramel Apple Crisp with Pie Filling and Brown Sugar Oatmeal Topping

Peeling and slicing apples for apple dessert recipes is one of my least favorite portions of the dish preparation process. However, in this delicious crisp recipe, canned apple pie filling is used for the convenience of fresh apple pie filling. There’s no need to peel or slice anything!;)

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce (to use as an ice cream topping) ** Please keep in mind that if you like a less sweet dish, you may reduce or delete the caramel topping. 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup old-fashioned or big flake oats
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 cup old-fashioned or large flake oats

Step by Step instructions

Unlike other dessert recipes, this one is divided into two parts: the apple filling and the crumble topping. To begin, you may prepare the filling directly in the bottom of the 9 x 13 pan that you’ll be baking it in if you like!

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Save yourself the trouble of washing another bowl by preparing the filling for this simple crisp recipe directly in the bottom of a 9 x 13 baking pan instead!

Step 2: Mix together the pie filling, caramel topping and cinnamon in the bottom of a 9 x 13 baking pan.

Evenly spread the filling in the bottom of the pan by smoothing it out with your hands.

Step 3: Prepare the streusel crisp topping by mixing together the flour, sugars, and oats in a mixing bowl. Cut in cubes of cold butter with a pastry cutter or two knives.

After the butter has been broken up into large chunks with the pastry blender, finish mixing the topping together with your clean hands until the mixture resembles large crumbs in texture.

Step 4: Sprinkle the crisp streusel topping over the filling mixture in the 9×13 inch pan. Sprinkle with chopped pecans.

The tastiest apple crisp, in our opinion, is served slightly warm with a dollop of vanilla ice cream on the side.

Delicious and cozy, Caramel Apple Crisp is the ideal treat for Fall! A drizzle of caramel topping adds the ideal finishing touch to this apple pie that will melt in your mouth!

Daughter’s Apple Crisp

Preparation time: 10 minutes 40 minutes in the oven

Makes

There are 9 servings in total. My mother’s apple crisp is, without a doubt, the greatest in all of Texas. After a small adjustment, I now spend less time in the kitchen and more time catching up with my vibrant 92-year-old mother, who is still as active as ever. North Richland Hills, Texas resident Joan Hallford Photo courtesy of Taste of Home of Daughter’s Apple Crisp Recipe.

Ingredients

  • 2 apple pie filling cans (each containing 21 ounces)
  • 2 teaspoons butter
  • To make the topping, combine 1 cup all-purpose flour with 1 cup sugar and 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg. Add 1/2 cup cold butter cubed and 1 big softly beaten egg. Serve with vanilla ice cream, if desired.

Directions

  1. Fill an 11×7-inch baking dish halfway with pie filling and dot with butter. In a large mixing basin, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and nutmeg. Using a pastry cutter, cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over the filling after mixing in the egg just until moistened. 375°F for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling, if using an uncovered pan. Serve while still warm, with ice cream on the side if preferred.

Classic Apple Crisp (Easy Recipe)

This season’s must-have dessert is apple crisp, and we’re chanting its praises from the rooftops. This comfort food staple, which is made with warm, gooey cinnamon apples and a brown sugar oat topping, takes half the time and work that regular apple pie does. To get started, you just need a few basic ingredients, including baking apples such as Granny Smith and Honeycrisp, to get the recipe going. How many different recipes can we create using apples? You may have been enjoying sweet and simple baked apples, or you may have delved deeply into apple cinnamon bread and caramel apple upside down cake, among other things.

For the time being, though, let’s stick to the fundamentals.

This apple pie is a delicious end-of-meal treat that requires very little preparation and yields a lot of taste.

Here’s Why You’ll Love This Apple Crisp

  1. Simpler than Pie:Apple pie is a delectable dessert, but making it from scratch is a time-consuming task that requires dedication. In this fruit crisp, we’ve replaced the pie crust with an oat streusel topping to make it more healthy. Leave your rolling pin in the cupboard and skip all of the chilling time for the pie dough. Basic Ingredients:Crisps are rather simple to make, and there are no unusual ingredients necessary. The majority of the components you’ll need are the same in both layers as well
  2. There will be no eggs: The need for egg-free baking recipes such as these has been expressed by many bakers. Even though we all enjoy handmade pie, it need a lengthy chilling period in order to properly firm up. Sometimes we need a crowd-pleasing dessert that is a bit quicker to prepare but is just as seasonal and stunning
  3. Here is the recipe for you. And it’s very delicious: What could be better than warm cinnamon apples topped with a chewy-crisp oat mixture? This is a must-have for the colder months.

And, most importantly, if you have little children, this dessert is both convenient and manageable. No need to wait for anything to reach room temperature, to cool down or to warm up before you can use it. Children like pouring the apples into the baking dish and sprinkling the oat crumble on top of the apples.

Overview of Apple Crisp Ingredients

Apple crisp is made up of two parts: the apple layer on the bottom and the oat topping on top. The topping is the same recipe we use for blueberry crumble pie and bourbon cherry crisp, with the only difference being that it is somewhat bigger to fit a 913 inch baking dish.

  1. Apples: For the best apples to utilize, see the list below. About 8 medium apples, peeled and sliced into bits, are needed for this recipe. Brown Sugar: We use brown sugar to sweeten and taste the entire meal, as well as to provide color and texture. It is required for both the apple layer and the apple topping. All-purpose flour thickens the apple filling and serves as the foundation for the crumble topping. Do you require a gluten-free version of this product? Enjoy this delicious gluten-free apple crisp that is packed with flavor. VanillaSalt: I’ve tried a number of apple crisp recipes over the years, and none of them come close to the way I make it today (recipe below). Vanilla brings out the best in these toasty tastes, while salt helps to balance out all of the richness. Trust me when I say that you don’t want to skip it either– the dessert will taste flat if you don’t. To make the apple layer, sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg on top, followed by another sprinkle of cinnamon on top of the topping. Using extremely cold butter will help to prevent it from melting too quickly and losing its consistency. Remove it from the refrigerator and cut it into cubes as soon as possible. Toss it into the flour mixture along with the brown sugar and cinnamon, using a pastry cutter or fork if necessary. This phase should not be overcomplicated
  2. The mixture should be sloppy, crumbly, and gritty. Less is more in this case. (This is wonderful music to our ears! )
  3. Oats: Some oats get somewhat crunchy, while others remain soft and chewy. Make sure to use whole oats to get the nicest texture. After you’ve chopped in the butter, add the oats to the topping mixture and combine well. Especially with strawberry crispas, you don’t want the oats to break down too much because the fruit is so sweet.

What Are the Best Apples to Use for Baking?

Apples that are firmer are best for baking. Apples that are soft, mealy, or mushy should be avoided. When baking with apples, it’s recommended to use a combination of tart and sweet varieties for maximum taste. I normally use 4 tart apples and 4 sweet apples to make apple crisp.

  • I enjoy baking with tart apples such as the Granny Smith (in my view, the greatest overall baking apple), Braeburn, Jonathan, and Pacific Rose
  • I also enjoy baking with sweet apples such as the Granny Smith. Jazz, Pazazz (which can be difficult to come by but is quite amazing! ), Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, and Fuji are some of my favorite sweet apples to bake with.

PeelSlice Apples into Chunks

If you don’t want to peel the apples, you may omit this step, however many people love peeled apples in desserts. This OXO peeler (affiliate link) is something I use and really like. Apple slices are commonly used in apple crisp recipes, but I like apple chunks since they are easier to handle with a spoon or fork. In addition, it’s impossible to produce completely consistent slices, which means that some portions may be significantly thinner than others– and this results in mushy apples.

Apples should be cut into 1-inch chunks that are between 1/4 and 1/2 inch thick for this apple crisp. Then combine all the other apple layer ingredients and sprinkle on the crunchy oat topping to finish it off.

Apple Crisp Toppings!

Of course, you can serve apple crisp on its own, but a dollop of vanilla ice cream elevates this delicious treat to a whole new level. It’s just that apple crisp is an unavoidable need! For good measure, sprinkle some salted caramel over the top. This is the greatest fall dessert you’ll find anywhere.

Can I Make Apple Crisp Without Oats?

Yes, without a doubt. If you don’t want to use oats in your apple crisp, you may use the topping from apple crumble pie, only slightly increased. 3/4 cup (150g) brown sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour, and 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, melted and gently cooled, are the ingredients for this recipe. Combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, and flour in a large mixing bowl. Toss the cooled melted butter into the mixture, stirring constantly, until the mixture is thick and crumbly.

  1. Bake at the same temperature and for the same amount of time as listed below.
  2. Cold butter, cut into the batter in the same manner as in the recipe below, will provide a crispy crumble topping.
  3. Rather than an oat topping, cobblers are typically topped with a biscuit or cake-like topping.

Description

Classic apple crisp with warm gooey cinnamon apples and a buttery brown sugar oat topping is a favorite of many people. Make-ahead and freezing instructions may be found in the recipe notes.

Filling

  • 8 medium apples, cut into 1-inch chunks that are 1/4 – 1/2 inch thick (approximately 10 cup chunks)
  • 1/2 cup (100g) packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup (31g) all-purpose flour (spoonleveled)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Topping

  • 7/3 cup (94g) all-purpose flour (spoonleveled)
  • 3/4 cup (150g) packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 1 cup (80g) old-fashioned wholeoats
  • Optional: salted caramel and vanilla ice cream for serving
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (177 degrees Celsius). Prepare a 9-by-13-inch baking pan by lightly greasing it. Any baking dish that holds 4 quarts would suffice. All of the filling ingredients should be mixed together in a large mixing dish before being put onto the baking pan
  2. Make the icing by combining the following ingredients: In a medium-sized mixing basin, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. A pastry cutter or fork can be used to crumble in the butter until the mixture is extremely crumbly. Add in the oats and mix well. Sprinkle on top of the filling
  3. Allow 45 minutes for baking, or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit juices are bubbling around the edges. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and set it on a wire rack to cool for at least 5 minutes before serving the cake. Plain or with salted caramel and/or vanilla ice cream, serve warm, room temperature, or cold. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 5 days after covering them with plastic wrap.

Notes

  1. Make AheadFreezing Instructions: Baked and cooled crisp can keep in the freezer for up to 3 months if stored properly. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator, then bake (covered) at 350°F (177°C) for 30 minutes, or until the potatoes are completely cooked through. You can make the crisp up to step 3, then cover and chill for up to 1 day before baking the crisp in the oven. You may also freeze the unbaked crisp for up to 3 months if you choose not to bake it. Allow the meat to defrost overnight in the refrigerator before continuing with step 4. Due to the fact that the crisp will be cold, the baking time will be slightly longer. Apples: For information on the finest apples to use, see the blog page above. My favorite apple crisp recipe calls for an equal mixture of Granny Smith and Jazz or Pink Lady apples. Oats: Whole oats are preferred, although quick oats can be substituted if necessary. The crumble topping will just be a tad more powdered as a result. (Don’t be tempted to minimize the amount of flour used
  2. Otherwise, the topping would be oily.) Make a 1:1 substitution of whole oats for quick oats. See the blog article linked above for an oat-free topping. Add 1 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts to the crisp topping if you’d like to jazz it up a bit. When you add the oats, make sure to stir them into the mixture. If you want to make half of this recipe, simply divide the ingredients in half, then bake it in a 9-inch square or round baking dish. Reduce the baking time to approximately 30-35 minutes.

Apple crisp, fruit crisp, and apples are some of the keywords to remember.

Cooking an Apple Crumble Pie is a delicious and simple pie that everyone will ask you to make over and over. A delicate flaky crust filled with luscious juicy cinnamon kissed apples and topped with a delectable crumb topping completes this wonderful dessert. This is the ideal apple pie to serve as a dessert after any meal.

Why This Is the Best Apple Crumb Pie Ever!

A declaration like “the best” is a significant one, and it’s not one I make lightly.

and the phrase “The Best” aptly describes this Apple Crumb Pie! It was many years ago that I served this apple pie for Thanksgiving, and it was a huge hit; it has since been requested on several occasions.

  • It’s easy to prepare ahead of time, and it bakes up flawlessly every time. It’s easy to prepare using homemade pie dough or store-bought pie crust if you want something quick. It can be served warm, at room temperature, or chilled, according to preference. Simple items that you most likely already have on hand

The Best Apples for Pie

Making the ideal apple pie (or apple crumble) begins with selecting the best apples available to you. An apple that is crisp and somewhat sour, yet that will maintain its form when baking, is what you’re looking for. Using a Granny Smith apple, such as the one I used in my apple crumb pie recipe, is a good choice for baking apple pie. While you may use any apple in this recipe, some apples have a softer texture or are less crisp than others, which means your pie may get mushy or the apples may not maintain their form as well.

How Many Apples are Needed for a Pie

This will vary depending on the recipe you’re using and the topping you’re using; for example, this specific recipe utilizes a fantastic crumb topping, which allows the apples to be piled extremely high. There will be around 6-7 cups of apples in this apple crumb pie if you use eight medium Granny Smith apples. Always peel your apples before baking them in a pie since the skin can turn rough and chewy once baked.

How Many Cups is a Sliced Apple?

You should anticipate 3 medium apples (about 1 pound) to generate around 2 1/2 cups of sliced apples from a 1 pound of medium apples. Stack the apples high in this apple crumble pie recipe since they will shrink slightly as they bake. Cut the apples fairly thin (approximately 1/8′′) and place them in the pie pan. If you plan on using a lot of sliced apples, an apple peeler, corer, and slicer will make this process much easier. It’s a terrific investment that will save you hours of time!

Crumb Topping for Apple Pie

The topping is what distinguishes this pie from the traditional apple pie recipe. The crumble is simple to create, and this pie serves a large number of people! It’s a straightforward concoction of:

Tips for a Perfect Pie

  • Granny smith apples are a good choice since they are hardy and long-lasting. Pile the apples high on the baking sheet
  • They will shrink a little as they bake. If your crumb topping appears powdery, it means that it has not been well blended. Make use of your hands to thoroughly combine the ingredients until larger crumbs form. If you find that the topping is starting to brown too soon, lay a tiny square of aluminum foil over the centre
  • Otherwise, proceed as directed. I make my pies in a great deep dish pie plate that I place on a baking sheet that has been coated with parchment paper before baking. Because it is smaller, it is simpler to get the pie in and out of the oven and will collect any drips or spills if the pie should bubble over

Storage/LeftoversReheating Apple Crumb Pie

The pie can be kept at room temperature, uncovered, for up to 24 hours after it has been allowed to cool. It’s OK to prepare this apple crumb pie ahead of time and then reheat it in the oven just before serving. Reheat for approximately 20 minutes at 325°F (heated from room temperature). This is served with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped topping, as well as caramel sauce. Either before or after baking, you may put this pie in the freezer. If the pie is frozen before baking, it can be cooked directly from the freezer.

Place the pie in the oven for 20 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.

  • 12cup butter cold and cubed
  • 1 cupflour

Filling

  • 1 cup white sugar

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 18 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 8 granny Smith apples

FollowSpend with Pennies on Pinterest for more information.

Directions

  • Using a fork, combine all of the topping ingredients until they are thoroughly combined and crumbly

Filling:

  • Apples should be peeled, cored, and sliced into thin slices (about 1 inch thick). Sugar, flour, lemon juice, lemon zest (if used), cinnamon and nutmeg are mixed along with apple slices. Apple slices should be layered in a pie shell (it will be rather full) with any remaining juice being poured over the apples. Apple slices are topped with the topping, which is patted down over the apples. Place pie pan on a cookie sheet (pie pans have a tendency to spill when they are extremely full, so this will preserve your oven from damage)
  • Baking time: 15 minutes at 450 degrees F, then lower heat to 350 degrees F and bake for an additional 45-55 minutes. Check the apples by poking a hole in the center of the pie to make sure they are mushy all the way through. Warm or at room temperature are both acceptable serving temperatures.

The topping must be thoroughly combined in order to keep together; if it is powdery, it has not been thoroughly combined. You can use your hands to combine the ingredients if necessary. Make careful to keep an eye on the crumble topping while it bakes. If it begins to brown prematurely, add a tiny piece of aluminum foil on top to prevent it from burning. For their acidic flavor and ability to retain their form, Granny Smith apples are my top recommendation. Either before or after baking, you may put this pie in the freezer.

Preheat the oven to 425°F and cover the pie loosely with aluminum foil if you are baking it from frozen.

Reduce the heat to 350°F and bake for another 45-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
