Ingredients
- 1-1/2-cup cold 2 percent milk
- 2 packages (3.4 ounces each) instant vanilla pudding mix
- 1 carton (12 ounces) frozen whipped topping, thawed
- 1 package (15-1/2 ounces) Oreo cookies, crushed
- 1 package (15-1/2 ounces) Oreo cookies, crushed Optional: shaved white chocolate (optional).
Directions
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the cream cheese, butter, and confectioners’ sugar until smooth and combined well. In a large mixing basin, whisk together the milk and pudding mixes for 2 minutes. Set aside for 2 minutes, or until the pudding is soft-set. Gradually incorporate the sour cream into the cream cheese mixture. Fold in the whipped topping until it is well-combined. 1-1/3 cup smashed cookies should be spread into a 13×9-inch baking dish that has not been buttered. Half of the pudding mixture and half of the remaining cookies should be layered on top of each other. Layers should be repeated. Make sure to chill the dish for at least 1 hour before serving. if desired, garnish with shaved white chocolate (optional).

How Long Can I Make Dirt Pie Cups In Advance?

So, what exactly is dirt pudding, and how do you make it? No matter what name you choose, the term “dirt cake” or “dirt dessert” or “Oreo pudding” or “worms in dirt” refers to the same no-bake delicacy that blends fluffy, creamy, whipped pudding with buttery crushed Oreos. Every church picnic and family reunion I attended as a child consisted of chocolate dirt pudding. A huge (clean) sand bucket served as a serving container for my aunt’s dessert, which was strewn with gummy worms and served with a little shovel.
The worst part about reaching the dessert table was finding that all of the dirt and worms had been washed away with the food.
How to Make Dirt Pudding
It’s true that you could do things the hard way by making your own pudding and whipping up your own cream. Although it is created with store-bought conveniences such as instant pudding and Cool Whip, the dirt dessert that I am familiar with and like tastes extremely fantastic!
What goes in Dirt Pudding? Here’s what you’ll need!
- 1 1/2 (14 ounce) packages Oreos (I use regular Oreos, but double stuff also works)
- 1 1/2 (14 ounce) packages chocolate chips 1 cup melted butter (salted or unsalted)
- 3 1/2 cups unsweetened almond milk 2 small cartons of your favorite instant pudding (see below for additional information!).
- At make the frosting, combine 8 ounces cream cheese, melted to room temperature
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 12 ounces whipped topping or Cool Whip, defrosted
- And 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Optional: gummy worms (optional)
Making Dirt Pudding
- Begin by smashing the Oreos into small pieces. My preferred method is to place them all in a zip lock bag and smash them with a rolling pin until they are coarsely chopped. Because I believe that the dish tastes best when there are both large and little bits of Oreo, I recommend not pulverizing them totally. Pour the melted butter into the Oreos and shake it to coat them completely. To make the pudding, combine the milk and pudding in a mixing dish and whisk until it begins to thicken, about 2 minutes. Remove from consideration
- Beat on medium high speed until the cream cheese and sugar are smooth in a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Add the pudding mixture and mix on a moderate speed until everything is well blended. Fold in the Cool Whip until well combined. In a bowl, bucket, or pan, layer the pudding with the crumbs, finishing with the crumbs on top of the pudding. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, if not overnight.
Chocolate Dirt Pudding or Vanilla? That is the question.
In our house, there is a lot of debate regarding what makes the ultimate best dirt cake and what does not. My husband favors his dirt dish with chocolate pudding above the rest of the recipes. It’s best served with French vanilla pudding, in my opinion. We’ve also experimented with chocolate fudge pudding and a cheesecake-chocolate combination. To celebrate Halloween, we like to cook Halloween Dirt Pudding, which we serve with pumpkin pudding. My advise is to experiment with a few different variants and see which one your family prefers the most.
How to Serve Oreo Pudding
- My favorite way to serve mud pudding is in a sand bucket with a sharp edge, such as these. Place a Cool Whip lid as far down the bucket as it will go before removing it from the bucket. This eliminates part of the empty space at the bottom and ensures that your pudding layers reach the top of the pan. In addition to the “dirt cake,” you can also make “dirt cupcakes” by layering thin pudding and Oreo layers in a 9 x 13 inch pan
- Glass trifle bowls are particularly great since they enable you to see through all of the layers. It’s also possible to manufacture individual Dirt Pudding cups, similar to the ones we used in our Pumpkin Dirt Pudding parfaits.
Make Ahead Dirt Cake
Because it must be prepared ahead of time, Dirt Pudding is an excellent choice for parties and celebrations. The recommended minimum chill period is 2 hours, however I find that it works best after around 24 hours of chilling.
Having spent a whole day in the refrigerator, the soft, pudding-soaked Oreos are utter perfection. Dirt dessert can keep for about 3 days in the refrigerator. Following that, the Oreos begin to degenerate into mushy territory.

- If you’re serving the pudding in a big play pail, you may want to set the whipped topping lid upside down in the bottom of the pail. Stir until well combined. This shortens the length of the bucket and ensures that the pudding will fill it all the way to the top. Start with a layer of Oreos at the bottom of the pan. Place a layer of the pudding mixture on top of the cake. Continue until the Oreos are gone, starting and finishing with the Oreos each time. Gummy worms should be arranged on top. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours, if not overnight, before serving.

Instructions
- Prepare the cake mix according to the directions on the box, using a mixer. Combine until everything is well-combined. Bake the cake in a 9×13″ pan for 22-28 minutes, depending on the size of the pan. Check the cake’s doneness by putting a toothpick into the center of the cake. Using a toothpick, check to see whether your cake has finished baking. After that, wait for 10 minutes of chilling. If you want to poke holes in your cake while it is still warm, use the end of a wooden spoon or another round item to poke holes all over it. Heat the jar of hot fudge sauce in the microwave until it is warm enough to mix and thin out with a spoon (about 30-60 seconds depending). Pour the full jar of hot fudge sauce over the top of the cake and allow it to seep into the cake until the cake has completely cooled before cutting into it. Looking for a delicious, sweet treat to make with the kids or grandkids? Look no further! This Dirt Pie is even better than the one you remember from childhood. Add gummy worms or a scoop of vanilla ice cream to really kick it up a notch!
1 box chocolate fudge cake mix, plus all of the additional ingredients listed on the package’s ingredients list The following ingredients are needed for the topping: 14.3 ounces Oreos 12.8 ounces of homemade hot fudge Chocolate instant pudding mix (3.4 ounces) made by Hershey’s Dark Chocolate. 1 3/4 quarts of milk For the soil, you’ll need 3.4 ounces. Instant pudding mix made with Hershey’s Dark Chocolate. 1 3/4 quarts of milk 1 tub of Cool Whip (optional). Hot fudge on top of that Oreos with optional garnishes
Directions
Step 1 Prepare the cake mix according to the directions on the package. Bake the cake in a 9×13-inch baking dish for 22-28 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out completely clean. Allow for approximately 10 minutes of cooling time. Step 2 While the cake is still somewhat warm, puncture holes in the top with the end of a wooden spoon or a rubber spatula to allow air to escape. To make the hot fudge smooth and easily mixed, heat the jar of hot fudge in the microwave for 30 seconds at high power.
