Because it was so near to the Fourth of July, I decided to prepare a pie to share with friends and family.

I particularly enjoy cherry pie, so the combination of the two flavors seemed like a perfect decision to me.

How to make a flaky pie crust

Then there’s my Grandma’s recipe for no-fail crust (which, to be honest, probably came from a flour bag, a butter packet, or a Betty Crocker cookbook at some time years and years ago, but our family has used it for generations so we claim it as our own because we don’t know where it came from). Flaky, soft crust made with both butter and a dab of shortening, with a pleasant buttery flavor, is the consequence of combining both butter and shortening. It’s the most difficult part in making the crust to be delicate with it and avoid over mixing it.

I assure you that if you don’t overmix it when you lay it out, it will come together easily and quickly.

How to make Apple Cherry Pie

The filling for the pie is made with only a few ingredients, but boy, is it tasty and delicious to eat. The cherries give the apples a slight red tint, but the apples and the cherries are a delicious combination when cooked together. The combination of sweet cherries and acidic granny smith apples is really delightful! It’s making my mouth wet just thinking about it!

What kind of apples to use for apple pie

A tart apple with great texture retention is what I recommend using for this recipe. In this recipe, I used a Granny Smith apple, but you could also use a sun crisp, gold rush, or Jonathan apple. Apples such as the Fuji, Golden Delicious, Crispin, and Red Rome are ideal alternatives if you like a sweeter apple. There are also apples that are sweet and tart that work well. In such instance, a Braeburn and a pink lady are the two varieties I would recommend. Despite the fact that they have a sweet and tangy flavor, they don’t get too mushy when cooked.

How many apples do you need to buy

Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Fruit comes in varied shapes and sizes, but three medium-sized apples will provide around 2 1/2 cups sliced apples in general. I usually buy more than I need since an apple pie baked loses a lot of volume and the extras don’t go to waste.

Everything will be OK if you just dump them all in the centre of the pie shell. PRO TIP: Make sure the apples are chopped into a uniform thickness before baking; I cut mine to about 1/3 inch thick so they soften while baking but don’t turn to mush!

What kind of cherries to use for the best cherry pie

I used canned tart cherries from Oregon Specialty Fruit for this recipe. I know they are canned, but it is really difficult to get tart cherries in supermarkets, and even if I do manage to locate them, I despise the process of pitting cherries. Tips for a successful Apple Cherry Pie Recipe

You’ll want to save aside some of the cherry juice to combine with the sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, cinnamon, and salt in a mixing bowl. In order to have a wonderful velvety texture for the sauce, it should be cooked until it has a caramel-like texture. Because the cornstarch works as a thickening, it is important to stir constantly while the dish is cooking. Once the liquid has reached a wonderful caramel-like consistency, pour it over the cherries and apples and let it aside for a few minutes to allow the liquid to fully coat the fruit mixture.

After that, you may either use a simple pie crust to cover the top or a cookie cutter to cut out designs to decorate the top of the pie with.

  1. Prepare a handmade pie dough or use a pre-made pie crust. After the pie dough has been allowed to cool, begin making the pie filling. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Remove from the fire and stir in the remainder of the sugar until it is thoroughly incorporated. Afterwards, pour the sauce over the cherry apple mixture and let it aside for 15 minutes. Roll out the pie crusts while the fruit is resting. (Roll out the crust to be 2 inches thick.) “(It should be broader than your pie pan.) Place one pie crust in the bottom of a pie pan, allowing the sides to hang over by 2 inches on each side “in addition to this, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] Tuck the edges under and then crimp the edges. Cover the edges of the pie with aluminum foil at this time to prevent it from becoming too brown. (It’s easier to do this before you put the filling in the pie.) The number of cuts you will require may vary depending on the form you choose. In order for the steam to escape as the cake bakes, overlap them as you put them
  5. However, leave a few open “vents” between them. Once the pie has been covered with cutouts, bake it for 50 minutes at 400 degrees. For the final 10 minutes, you can remove the aluminum foil edging. Allow the pie to cool fully on a wire rack before slicing it.

Notes

When making spritzer bottles, you can add the water one tablespoon at a time until the desired consistency is reached. If you don’t want to create your own pie crust, you may purchase one at your local grocery shop.

A SIMPLE AND QUICK DESSERT

Today’s dish was partially inspired by myEASY APPLE DANISHESandCRESCENT ROLL CHEESE DANISHESandEASY CINNA-MINIS recipes, which you can find on my blog.

Crescent rolls are one of my favorite ingredients to work with when creating fun and simple sweets. Furthermore, these are desserts that my family can easily prepare themselves without requiring a great deal of assistance from me if they want to whip up a quick and easy dessert.

CAN YOU USE DIFFERENT PIE FILLINGS?

These were a huge hit with us! The nice part about them is that you can completely customize them to any filling your family enjoys. There are just a plethora of alternatives here. Apple, blueberry, strawberry, lemon, and chocolate pie fillings are all excellent choices!

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (FULL RECIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST)

Crescent roll dough, powdered sugar, and milk are all used in this recipe.

HOW TO MAKE CHERRY PIE BITES:

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Nonstick cooking spray should be sprayed onto a normal muffin tray. Individual crescent roll dough pieces should be unrolled and placed in individual muffin pans. Place the largest piece of dough in the bottom of the pan. In the event that you only have one muffin tray, you may need to make two batches of these. Fill each crescent roll dough piece with pie filling using a spoon. Make sure you use a lot of pie filling. It’s fine if a little liquid slips out throughout the baking process.

  • It should be sufficient to use 3 to 4 heaping teaspoons.
  • You should be able to pull in three corners at a time.
  • It is not necessary for the filling to be completely covered.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake for 13-14 minutes.
  • You don’t want to bite into them and have some of the crescent roll still be doughy and not completely cooked when you bite into them.
  • The final step is to apply the glaze.
  • It’s important to note that while I placed my bites on a cooling rack with wax paper below, you may sprinkle the glaze over them while they are still in the muffin pan.

Add 4 tablespoons of water and pulse until the dough comes together just a little bit more. (Alternatively, you may create the dough by hand in a large mixing bowl, using a pastry blender or two forks to cut in the butter to desired consistency.)
  • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured work surface and form it into a round disk with a rolling pin. The dough should be rolled out to a 12-inch round. The dough may be transferred to a pie dish by rolling it half way around the rolling pin and then unrolling it directly over the pie dish. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cherry filling and crumble ingredients
  • Set aside in the refrigerator to cool.

Make the Cherry Filling:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. In a large mixing basin, add all of the filling ingredients and gently toss to incorporate. Set it aside while you prepare the crumble topping for the pie.

Make the Topping:

  • In a medium-sized mixing basin, whisk together the oats, flour, brown sugar, and salt until well combined. Add in the butter pieces and, using your fingers, break the butter into the oat mixture until clumps form

Assemble and Bake the Pie:

  • Make sure the cherry filling is properly blended by stirring it a few times. Pour the cherry filling into the pie crust with a slotted spoon, allowing any excess liquid in the bowl to be discarded. It is not necessary to use all of the liquids that the cherries have produced since the pie will become overly liquidy. Sprinkle the crumble topping on top of the cherries and set aside. Bake the pie at 400° F for 20 minutes, then decrease the oven temperature to 350° and continue baking the pie for 40 to 45 minutes more, or until the filling is bubbling and golden. When you check on the pie halfway through the baking time, cover it with a piece of aluminum foil to avoid the crust and topping from becoming too brown.
