Easy Shepherd’s Pie + Tasty St Patrick’s Day Food Traditions
Ground lamb is used in this shepherds pie dish, exactly as it is in the traditional St. Patrick’s Day supper. Some of the recipes I’ve seen online ask for ground beef, which I’m not a fan of. Those who believe that cottage pie is literally what you would call a shepherds pie when it is cooked with meat are mistaken. My idea is that because lamb is not widely available in many parts of the United States, people began substituting beef for lamb, and through the years and generations, many people didn’t realize the difference between the two types of meat.
It’s also a fantastic way to make use of any leftover mashed potatoes!
Can you freeze shepherds pie?
It is one of my favorite Sunday dinners, and it is also a terrific meal prep idea for the week ahead. Everything in this dish freezes and reheats well! First, allow the shepherd’s pie to reach room temperature before storing it in the freezer. Wrap it securely in aluminum foil and store it in the freezer for 30 minutes. It will stay nicely in the freezer for 2 to 3 months once it has been frozen. The foil should be left on top of the casserole dish for reheating shepherd’s pie. Preheat the frozen pie for one hour at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
What to serve with easy shepherd’s pie
I prefer to serve the dish with a few spinach parmesan sables on the side as an accompaniment. When I make them for a St. Patrick’s Day supper, I bake them in the shape of four-leaf clovers to commemorate the holiday. They’re just adorable! - Russet potatoes (about 3 medium) peeled and sliced into 1-inch pieces
- 4 tablespoons (2 oz) unsalted butter melted Half a cup of whole milk, warmed
- 2 big egg yolks
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1.75 pounds seasoned ground lamb
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 medium carrots, peeled and sliced into 1/2 inch thick slices 1/2 teaspoonsea salt, or more or less to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, or more or less to taste
- 2 clovesgarlic, minced or pressed through a garlic press (approximately 2 teaspoons)
- 1/2 teaspoonsea salt, or more or less to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, or more or less to taste 4/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon tomato paste
- 2 cups low-sodium beef stock or beef bone broth
- 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme or 1/2 teaspoon dried
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup frozen peas
FOR THE TOPPING:
- The oven should be preheated at 400 degrees F with the center oven rack in the centre of the oven. Place the potatoes in a large saucepan with enough water to cover them and bring to a boil. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender
- While that’s going on, brown the lamb in a large ovenproof pan over medium heat, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until it’s no longer pink and the fat has rendered, approximately 3 minutes total. Drain the grease into a big mixing bowl using a fine-mesh strainer placed over a large mixing basin. Remove all except 1 tablespoon of the rendered fat from the pan and set it aside. Drain the potatoes thoroughly and return them to the saucepan over low heat. Using a potato masher, mash the potatoes until they are completely smooth. Fold in the butter until it is melted, then whisk in the heated milk and egg yolks until everything is well combined. Taste and season with salt and pepper to your liking. Cover the pan with aluminum foil and leave it aside while you prepare the filling.
FOR THE FILLING:
- In the same pan that you cooked the lamb in, boil 1 tablespoon of the saved lamb fat over medium heat until it is bubbling. Once the oil is shimmering, add the onion, carrots, and 1/2 teaspoon each of salt and pepper. Cook until the vegetables are tender. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, or until the veggies have softened somewhat. Cook for about 30 seconds, stirring constantly, until the garlic is aromatic. Toss in the flour and tomato paste and cook, stirring frequently, for approximately 1 minute, or until the flour is completely integrated. Using a wooden spoon, scrape off any browned pieces from the bottom of the pan as you add the stock/broth, thyme, and Worcestershire sauce in small batches. Prepare a simmering mixture, then decrease the heat to medium-low and cook until the sauce has thickened, 3 to 5 minutes. Immediately remove the pan from the heat and toss in the drained lamb and frozen peas, seasoning with salt and pepper to taste, and spreading the filling into an equal layer on the baking sheet Spread the potato topping over the contents in a uniform layer, covering it thoroughly and securing the potatoes to the edges of the skillet. Bake the pie at 400 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Allow approximately 10 minutes of cooling time before serving the shepherd’s pie.

Traditional Irish cuisine such as potatoes, cabbage and noodles, and corn beef hash may spring to mind while thinking of traditional Irish dishes.
Irish Food Culture
Ireland’s dairy and cattle industries are both significant employers. That means there will be plenty of great cheeses and meat dishes to choose from. Lamb, hog, and chicken (think chicken and dumplings) are other popular dishes in the region’s culinary tradition.
Grains such as wheat, oats, and barley are widespread, while vegetables such as potatoes, cabbage, and curly kale are popular. Shephard’s pie is another popular dish, and it is a family favorite in my household.
How To Make Shephard’s Pie
Make no mistake: If you believe that making a traditional dinner to honor the event is out of the question, think again. This shepherd’s pie recipe is designed for families with active lifestyles. Although lamb is used in a classic shepherd’s pie, I don’t anticipate you making a special trip to the butcher to procure the meat. Unless, of course, you don’t want to. As a substitute, I’ll teach you how to prepare a St. Patrick’s Day lunch with the bare minimum of supplies, little time, and low work.

- 3 cups frozen mixed veggies
- 2 cups dry potato flakes
- 1 cup skim milk
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
- 1 package beef gravy
- 1 pound 97 percent lean ground beef
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Cooking spray should be sprayed into a big muffin tray. Ground beef has been cooked until it is tender. Microwave a mixture of veggies until they are cooked through. Prepare instant potatoes according to the directions on the box (the 1 cup skim milk listed in the ingredient list is for the instant potatoes.) Make the gravy according to the package directions. For this dish, I used McCormick Beef Gravy Mix, which I simply made with a small amount of water. In a large mixing bowl, combine the meat, beef gravy, and mixed veggies and toss thoroughly. 1/2 cup of the mixture should be scooped into large muffin pans or individual baking plates. Half a cup of mashed potatoes should be placed on top. Make lines in the tops of the potatoes with a fork, if desired. Over each individual piece, drizzle melted butter over the top. Paprika and freshly ground pepper should be sprinkled on top. Transfer to the oven and bake for approximately 30 minutes, or until the potatoes are golden brown. This recipe yields 8 servings.

Traditional Irish Shepherd’s Pie
Saint Patrick’s Day will be celebrated next week! Are you looking forward to it? In spite of the fact that I don’t generally do much to commemorate St. Patrick’s Day these days other from going out for a drink or two and perhaps sipping on some Jameson Irish Whiskey on the rocks (which is delicious! ), St. Patrick’s Day is one of my favorite holidays! You may already be aware of this because I bring it up every time St. Patrick’s Day rolls around — I spent a semester studying abroad in Dublin, Ireland, while in college.

- How did that happen?
- It was one of the finest decisions I have made for a variety of reasons, including the opportunity to study abroad.
- – one of the finest ways I can commemorate St.
- No one can understand how it has taken me this long to prepare a version of Irish Shepherd’s pie.
- And it’s a magnificent one at that!
Cottage pie, on the other hand, is cooked with ground beef and covered with a potato crust, whilst Shepherd’s pie is made with ground lamb and topped with a potato crust, as the name suggests.
I’m not here to pick apart minor details, and the only significant variation between the two recipes is the sort of meat that is utilized.
However, if you have ground lamb or mutton on hand, by all means, please substitute ground lamb instead — not so much to be traditional as it is because ground lamb is so wonderful and I wish it were easier to come by here in Iowa.
There is a specialty butcher I can visit who sells ground lamb and a variety of different lamb cuts, but in this case, convenience won out above all other factors.
Perhaps it would be worthwhile to travel a little further for the ground lamb if I were to make this Shepherd’s Pie on St.
I simply want to make Ireland proud!
MUSHROOMS were added to this Shepherd’s Pie by me!
I couldn’t help myself with any of them.
Aside from that, mushrooms are usually an excellent choice!
Believe me when I say that it was a wise decision!
It was until before I put the entire shepherd’s pie in the oven that I decided to add them in while they were still frozen — this allowed them to taste fresh and have a great crunch to them.
It’s really good!

Because I was preoccupied with something else for a few minutes, I put them back on the burner to conserve counter space.
I quickly switched it off.
They were in a poor way with their smoking.
The tale has a happy ending: I was able to pluck out the charred pieces and the potatoes were preserved!

In a beautiful red wine/chicken broth saucy combination, all of this is cooked together!
It’s everything a Shepherd’s pie or a cottage pie should be, and then some more.
It performs a good job at re-heating, however it does become little dried out, which is ok with me.
It is recommended that you serve this shepherd’s pie with a simple light green salad to balance off the richness of the dish.
Magners, assuming you can obtain it in the United States, is known in Ireland as Bulmers.

This delicious and cozy Irish Shepherd’s pie is ideal for St. Patrick’s Day or any other occasion when you need to feed a large group of people. So delectable!
- Russet potatoes, peeled and quartered (about 3 potatoes)
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 pounds russet potatoes (about 3 potatoes)
- To make this recipe, you’ll need 1/4 cupmilk (I used unsweetened, unflavored almond milk, but any sort would do)
- 2 tablespoonslight sour cream
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 egg, room temperature and softly beaten
- A filling of 1 tablespoonoil, 1pound lean ground beef, lamb, or mutton*, 1 onion, chopped
- 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cupdry red wine**
- 3/4 cuplow sodium chicken broth
- 1 tablespoongluten free Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoonstomato paste
- 1 tablespoonliquid smoke (optional)
- 2 teaspoons dried thyme and rosemary
- 2 tablespoonswhite rice flour***
- 2 cupsfro Garnish
- Minced chives or parsley (fresh or dried)
- Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius). Boil potatoes: Place the peeled potatoes in a medium-sized saucepan and cover with water until they are tender. Turn the heat up to high and bring the water to a boil, then decrease the heat to a simmer without covering the pot. Allow the potatoes to boil for 8 to 10 minutes, or until they are fork-tender, depending on how large they are. Remove the potatoes from the water and place them back into the pot that the potatoes were cooked in, which should now be empty. Allow them to cool for a few minutes. While the potatoes are coming to a boil, begin working on the filling. Heat the oil in a big, oven-safe pan over medium heat (I like to use my cast iron skillet for this dish since it is very durable). Add the ground beef or lamb and break up the meat into tiny pieces, then mix everything together. Continue to simmer until the onion is soft and the meat is mostly browned, about 10 minutes. Cook for about 5 minutes, or until the mushrooms are soft, before adding the spinach. Returning the boiling potatoes to the saucepan, add the butter, milk, sour cream, salt, and pepper, and mash until the potatoes are largely smooth and the butter has melted. Remove from heat and set aside. Season with salt and pepper to taste, adjusting as necessary. Set the mixture aside after stirring in the egg. The sauce for the filling should be prepared as follows: If the potatoes appear to be a touch dry, add a splash or two additional milk. Add the garlic cloves and heat for 1 minute more before returning to the skillet with the filling to finish it off. Using a whisk or a spoon, combine the red wine, chicken broth, Worcestershire sauce and liquid smoke (if using) in a large mixing bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Allow for a 5-minute simmering period. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and adjust as necessary. Cook for 1 more minute after adding the white rice flour, then remove from the heat and set aside. Combine the frozen peas, carrots, and corn in a large mixing bowl. Adding mashed potatoes on top is a nice touch. Spread the filling out evenly on the baking sheet, then pour the mashed potatoes on top of the filling to finish it off. The potatoes should be spread out evenly on top of the mixture using a spatula. Bake: Place the pan in the oven for 15 minutes. Place the dish in the oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the mixture is bubbling and the mashed potatoes have a faint browning. Allow for a 10-minute cooling period. To finish, sprinkle chopped parsley or chives on top of the Shepherd’s pie before serving. Distribute the mixture onto plates and serve
*Traditionally, ground lamb or mutton is used to make shepherd’s pie (for more information, see the post), but if you live in a region where lamb is difficult to come by, ground beef will work just as well. In the case of ground beef, however, the dish is referred to as a cottage pie in the culinary world. With this Shepherd’s Pie recipe, I found myself going back for more!
Shepherd’s Pie is a meat pie cooked with ground lamb and vegetables that is covered with a potato crust in the traditional manner. Technically, this dish is referred to as “Cottage Pie” since it is prepared using beef, which is more readily available at my local grocery shop. Both varieties are equally delectable and form a fantastic casserole dish. The traditional Shepherd’s Pie does not include cheese on top, but I like cheese on just about everything, especially my potatoes, so I use it instead.
I first published this Shepherd’s Pie recipe back in 2012, so it was lovely to have the opportunity to re-shoot the images for it.

- 1-pound of beef
- 1-cup carrots, cut or diced
- 1/2 white onion, chopped (approximately 1 cup)
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 cup water
- 1-tablespoon dried thyme
- 2-tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1-cup beef broth
- 1-tablespoon cornstarch
- 1-cup frozen peas
- Season with salt and pepper to taste
- 4 big russet potatoes, peeled and diced (about 2 pounds or 3-4 cups diced)
- 1 teaspoon salt (for boiling water)
- 3-4 cups sliced bacon
- 1/4 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2-3 chopped garlic cloves
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the potatoes in a large saucepan with enough water to cover them completely. 1 teaspoon of salt should be added. Cook, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes, or until the vegetables are fork tender. (The amount of time it takes to cook the potatoes will vary depending on their size.)
- Remove the water from the tank. Potatoes should be mashed. (I prefer to use a potato ricer for this purpose.) To make the sauce, combine the milk, butter, garlic, salt, and pepper to taste. Make a mental note to put it away. (Be sure to stay warm.)
- Meanwhile, cook the beef with the carrots and onion in a big pan, breaking up the meat with a spoon, while the potatoes are boiling. Remove the fat from the meat mixture and return it to the pan. Toss the garlic, thyme, and Worcestershire sauce into the pan of meat and cook until fragrant. Cook for 1 minute while stirring constantly. Combine the beef broth and cornstarch in a mixing bowl. Add the ingredients to the skillet. Simmer for 3-5 minutes, or until the liquid has reduced and thickened a little. Remove the pan from the heat after adding the peas and stirring well. If you are not using a square baking dish, pour the meat mixture into an oven-safe pan. A 2 1/2-quart casserole dish was used for this recipe. Optional: use a fork to form little peaks or a beautiful design on the top of the mashed potatoes to finish off the dish with the meat mixture. Add the cheese before baking for a crispier crust, or 5-10 minutes before baking for a softer, melted cheese
- Bake for 25-30 minutes at 425 degrees Fahrenheit, or until the liquid is bubbling and the top is golden.

Tonight’s dinner will consist of beef shepherd’s pie. This lunch will satisfy your hunger while also providing a taste of Irish heritage. It’s common to think of St. Patrick’s Day in terms of beer, cupcakes, and other sweets. But, when it comes down to it, we all want a substantial dinner to quench our insatiable Irish appetite that burns deep inside us. To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, we’re creating a lovely beef shepherd’s pie for dinner this evening. Deliciously seasoned steak and potatoes, just the way your grandmother used to make them!
Talking about Shepherd’s pie, let’s get into it a little bit.
What Is Shepherd’s Pie?
Shepherd’s pie is available in a variety of versions these days, thanks to the abundance of options. While a typical dish would have minced lamb or mutton or beef that is cooked in a gravy or sauce with onions and other vegetables, it would also include peas, carrots and other vegetables as well. Finally, it is covered with a thick layer of mashed potatoes and roasted in the oven until golden brown on top. Often, a layer of cheese will be placed on top of the dish to allow it to melt. That is the fundamental component of the traditional recipe.
Is Cottage Pie the Same as Shepherd’s Pie?
The quick answer is that sure, it is possible. Cottage pie and Shepherd’s pie are the same item. Traditionally, the term “cottage” referred to a dwelling in which farmworkers who resided in rural areas would reside. The poor people who lived on the outskirts of town were, for the most part, the majority. Because potatoes are a simple and tasty crop to farm, they have earned the nickname “poor man’s meal.” As a result, this meal is known by a variety of names, including cottage pie. It is the social status of those who ate the pie that is the primary distinction between the two scenarios.
Personally, I love it when it’s served with meat!
Who Invented Shepherd’s Pie?
The origins of this supper meal may be traced back to the United Kingdom and Ireland. This dish is well-known across Ireland, and each establishment will prepare it in a slightly different way. If you ever have the luxury of traveling to Ireland, take a tour of the country’s shepherd’s pie (self-guided, of course, unless that’s truly a thing?) if you get the opportunity. Because each establishment has a unique interpretation of the dish, you’ll want to try Shepherd’s pie at a few different establishments over the course of many days.
To avoid delving too deeply into the political aspects of the situation, Irelanders could not afford much during the period of British rule and had to make do with what they had.
Because potatoes were a simple crop to farm, commoners would employ them as the hearty component of their cuisine because they were inexpensive. Incorporating leftover scraps and topping it with potatoes transformed a simple casserole dish into a delicious traditional Irish dinner.
How To Make Shepherd’s Pie
Making a traditional shepherd’s pie is a pretty simple process. My whole recipe may be found at the bottom of this page. Meat, veggies, gravy, and mashed potatoes form the foundation of this dish. To begin, you’ll need to prepare the mashed potatoes. When the mashed potatoes are almost through cooking, you may begin sautéing the steak and preparing the veggies for serving. A 3-quart dutch oven will be used to cook the meat and veggies. The mashed potatoes will be placed on top of that. Prepare the dish and serve it!
How to Reheat Shepherds Pie
Yes, it is possible to reheat Shepherd’s pie! To reheat this meal, you may either bake it or use a microwave. Oven: Remove the ingredients from the refrigerator and arrange them in an oven-safe baking dish. Wrap the container securely with aluminum foil to prevent any moisture from escaping. Reheat for approximately 30 minutes at 350 degrees F. Place the Shepherd’s pie in a microwave-safe dish to reheat it in the microwave. Stir the mixture occasionally until it is well cooked. Because of the inconsistent heating that occurs in the microwave, this is the least desired choice.
- Stuffed Cabbage, Corned Beef Hash Burgers, and Instant Pot Beef Stew are all delicious options.

Shepherd’s Pie Filling
- A 3 pound beef chuck roast that has been trimmed and cut into 1 inch pieces
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons pepper
- 6 tablespoons vegetable oil divided
- 214.5 ounces beef broth
- 1countyellow onion chopped
- 8 ounces baby portobello mushrooms sliced
- 1-1/2 cups carrots sliced
- 1 1/2 cups frozen peas thawed
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 10 sprigs thyme
- 10-12countrusset potatoes
- 4 tablespoons salted butter
- 1/4 cup half and half
- 1 teaspoon salt and pepper to taste
- 1countegg yolk
- 10-12countrusset potatoes
- In a large ziplock bag, toss the beef with the flour, salt, and pepper until evenly covered. In a large dutch oven, heat 2 tbsp oil over medium heat until shimmering. Add 1/3 of the meat and cook until browned, turning periodically, until the remaining steak is done. Remove the steak and put it aside
- Repeat the process with the remaining beef and oil twice more. Scrape the bottom of the dutch oven with a wooden spoon to remove any meat chunks that have accumulated
- Pour in the broth. Combine the onion, mushroom, peas, carrots, thyme, and garlic in a large mixing bowl. Cook for 5 minutes while stirring constantly. In a dutch oven, combine the cooked meat and juices, Worcestershire sauce, and salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and cook for 2 hours, or until the meat is tender. In a small dish, whisk together the cornstarch and 3 tablespoons cold water until smooth. Cook for 2 minutes, or until the meat mixture has thickened, until the sauce has thickened. Place a 3 quart baking dish on a baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Place mashed potatoes on top of the beef mixture and bake for 30 minutes, or until the mashed potatoes are browned and the filling is bubbling. Serve and take pleasure in it
- Potatoes should be peeled and cut into 1/2 inch pieces. In a large saucepan, combine the ingredients and fill halfway with water
- Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to a simmer to keep the sauce from boiling over. Allow potatoes to cook for 12-15 minutes, or until they can be easily mashed with tongs. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the butter and half-and-half and heat for 35 seconds. Drain the potatoes, transfer them to a large mixing dish, and mash them using a potato masher. Continue mashing until the mixture is smooth, adding half-and-half and butter, salt, and pepper as needed. Add the egg yolk and mix well. The potatoes for the top of your Shepherd’s pie are now ready.
