Step 1: Make the Pudding Layer
To begin, combine the instant vanilla pudding and cool skim milk in a large mixing dish. 5 minutes, or until the pudding is soft set, should be spent whisking vigorously. After that, fold in the Cool Whip. If you wanted to, you could use ordinary or sugar-free sugar in this recipe. Using a separate mixing bowl, beat together the softened butter, powdered sugar, and softened cream cheese until completely smooth. In a separate bowl, combine the cream cheese mixture with the pudding mixture, stirring until completely smooth.
Step 2: Make the Cookie Layer
After that, take out a packet of Oreos, which are widely considered to be America’s favorite sandwich cookie. Was it ever brought to your attention that Oreos used to be offered in 20oz packets, as a result of my mother’s original recipe from the 1980s? You could almost feel the steam rising out of her ears the day she discovered that they had reduced the size of the packet to 15.5oz and were selling it for a higher price than before. In a separate dish, mix together the cream cheese, butter, and powdered sugar until smooth and combined. Add to the pudding mixture and whisk until everything is well combined. Process the Oreos in a food processor or blender until they are fine crumbs. 1 1/2 cups cookie crumbs should be placed in the bottom of a large mixing basin. Half of the pudding mixture should be placed on top, followed by 1-1/2 cups cookie crumbs, the remaining pudding mixture, and the remaining cookie crumbs, if desired. Worms in Dirt” may not seem particularly appealing, but one bite of this simple treat will have you believing otherwise! These chocolate pudding cups are topped with broken cookies and gummy worms, resulting in a creepy-crawly treat that kids will enjoy helping to prepare as much as devouring. This dish does not involve any cooking and can be completed in about 15 minutes, making it an excellent project to perform with little assistants on a hot summer day in the backyard or backyard garden. - Divide the pudding mixture evenly among the eight muffin cups, each of which should hold just more than 1/2 cup of pudding.
- Then, using a small offset spatula, gently tap the cups on the counter several times to level the pudding.
- Using a spatula, cover the whole top of the pudding with the cookie crumbs to make it look like dirt.
- Your Worms in Dirt project is complete!
- In order to make them even more special, you may hide the cups inside of little flower pots or prepare a huge batch and store it in a large planter.

Halloween is almost coming, and I’m preparing some frightening sweets that aren’t too nasty to look at for my family and friends. Things like gingerbread man mummies and truffles that look you in the face are examples of how I prefer to make my desserts entertaining.
I use the word “first time” loosely because I’ve been crafting Dirt and Worms for years, but this is the first time I’ve done it with a Halloween treat theme in mind.
Dirt pudding, also known as Oreo Dirt Cake or just Dirt and Worms, is an American dessert composed of crushed Oreo cookies covered with chocolate pudding that has been combined with cream cheese and whipped cream. It is a popular delicacy in the United States. If you want to have some fun with it, you can add some gummy worms to the top of the pie and make it a traditional treat that will be a success with the kids. To make my Halloween Dirt Pudding Cups even more frightening, I used some wonderful zombie hand cake picks to decorate the tops of the cups.
(It sounds terrifying, doesn’t it?) With your own pudding cups, you can be as creative as you like, decorating them up for a variety of holidays or special events.
HOW TO MAKE IT
I appreciate how straightforward this dessert dish is, and how little time it takes to put it. The best part about this Dirt Dessert recipe is that it can be made ahead of time, which makes party planning a joy! To get started, do the following: Crush the Oreos in a food processor or in a zip-top bag with a rolling pin until finely ground. Combine the instant pudding mix and milk in a mixing bowl and set aside. Combine the cream cheese and powdered sugar in a mixing bowl. Fold the cream cheese mixture into the pudding until well combined.
- Combine the melted butter and cookie crumbs in a large mixing bowl.
- Half of the pudding should be placed on top.
- The remaining pudding should be placed on top.
- If wanted, add worms and Halloween decorations to complete the look.
HOW TO MAKE IT FROM SCRATCH
When making Dirt Pudding from scratch, it is not much more difficult than utilizing convenience goods such as instant pudding. Simply substitute my quick homemade pudding (which is prepared without eggs!) for the chocolate pudding in the recipe and follow with the remainder of the ingredients for the pudding layer. In lieu of the Cool Whip, make your own whipped cream (it takes less than 2 minutes to make.I’m not joking!) Additionally, you may vary the sweetness of the whipped cream by adding more or less sugar, based on your personal liking.
I created my Dirt Pudding Cups using chocolate pudding and chocolate sandwich cookies, but you can use almost any flavor combination you desire to create your own unique creation. We also enjoy it with this Butterscotch pudding since it has a similar appearance to the soil along the shore, which is not exactly brown but more golden and clay-like in appearance. Then, for an even more sandy mud pudding effect, top with vanilla sandwich cookies. If you’re not a fan of chocolate pudding, you may use a vanilla pudding foundation for the chocolate pudding base.

Creating Mud Pies and Dirt Cakes with your children may be a lot of fun. A dessert that can be shoveled out with gummy worms is a must-have for every spring or summer celebration. In addition to playing with real earthworms at school, my little one has been making this at home. Looking for a delicious, sweet treat to make with the kids or grandkids? Look no further! This Dirt Pie is even better than the one you remember from childhood. Add gummy worms or a scoop of vanilla ice cream to really kick it up a notch!
1 box chocolate fudge cake mix, plus all of the additional ingredients listed on the package’s ingredients list The following ingredients are needed for the topping: 14.3 ounces Oreos 12.8 ounces of homemade hot fudge Chocolate instant pudding mix (3.4 ounces) made by Hershey’s Dark Chocolate. 1 3/4 quarts of milk For the soil, you’ll need 3.4 ounces. Instant pudding mix made with Hershey’s Dark Chocolate. 1 3/4 quarts of milk 1 tub of Cool Whip (optional). Hot fudge on top of that Oreos with optional garnishes
Step 1 Prepare the cake mix according to the directions on the package. Bake the cake in a 9×13-inch baking dish for 22-28 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out completely clean. Allow for approximately 10 minutes of cooling time. Step 2 While the cake is still somewhat warm, puncture holes in the top with the end of a wooden spoon or a rubber spatula to allow air to escape. To make the hot fudge smooth and easily mixed, heat the jar of hot fudge in the microwave for 30 seconds at high power.
Allow for cooling while the cake is resting.
Pour it over the top of the cake as soon as possible.
Step 5Combine the second box of pudding with 1 3/4 cups of cold milk in a large mixing bowl.
Step 6Place 3/4 of the Oreos package into a gallon-sized plastic bag and smash them with a rolling pin until they are crumbly.
To make the “soil” layer, combine the crushed Oreos with the Cool Whip mixture and distribute the contents over the top of the cake to form a layer of dirt.
Serve chilled, and keep any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
