Every glass of wine may include a little amount of carbohydrates, but the judgment is still out on how those carbs may effect your overall health. Drinking excessive amounts of wine may cause some diabetics’ blood sugar levels to rise, whereas drinking particular red wines may reduce your blood sugar in rare cases. Keep in mind that wine includes a modest quantity of carbohydrates and, as such, should be consumed in moderation if you are watching your carb intake for health reasons. Merryvale Winery – The Napa Wine Project

Migliavacca Wine Company is our highlighted Napa Valley winery. Merryvale Winery is located in the southern portion of the municipal boundaries of St. Helena, near to the railroad tracks and Highway 29. The site is widely visible to the public. Its location is prominently displayed (1000 Main Street). This winery has a long and illustrious history, dating back to its founding and far into the twentieth century. In 1933, the winery was built (along with several other Napa wineries built immediately after Prohibition, including the nearby Louis Martini Winery), and it was initially known as Sunnyhill Winery before being renamed Sunny St.

  1. A partnership between Jack Riorda and other investors established the winery (we first heard his name when we interviewed Peter Mondavi many years ago).
  2. Helena during the 1930s — Peter and Robert Mondavi’s father, Ceasare Mondavi, actually joined partners with Riorda in Sunny St.
  3. The winery was sold in the mid-1940s and was operated as a cooperative for a period of time.
  4. Then there’s the modern-day version of Merryvale.
  5. Bill Harlan and numerous real estate partners, notably Peter Stocker and John Montgomery, were responsible for the development of the current Sunny St.
  6. Bob Levy, the original winemaker, would go on to develop one of the valley’s most renowned long-term winemaking collaborations with Bill Harlan, working on wines for Harlan Estate, BOND, Promontory, and The Napa Reserve.
  7. Helena wines while taking advantage of the winery’s custom crush services at the time.

Despite the fact that they did not yet have electricity, they were able to process the first crop at the winery, which Bob explained to us as having required them to physically pull a massive generator onto the site.

Helena winery and grounds in 1986, Bill Harlan and his partners established their own winery.

Merryvale Vineyards was established in Sunny St.

Helena.

Gaslight Building/Antiques/Memorabilia/Merryvale Antiques & Memorabilia Pacific Union Land Company was created in 1975 by Bill Harlan and his business partner, Peter Stocker.

Based in Danville, the firm is currently highly active and specializes on land development, residential construction, self-storage facility construction, and commercial development.

From 1980 to 1998, their offices were housed in the historic and renowned Gas Light Building.

It was owned by Marie Sutcliffe, who was also an active gardener for a number of years.

The Merryvale was the name that the partners of Pacific Union Land Company used to call their office building when it first opened its doors.

The Schlatter family is the company’s current proprietors.

René, Jack’s son, and his wife Laurence are in charge of the winery’s operations (who is a 6th generation vintner and whose family owns Cave des Rois on the steep slopes of tiny Villeneuve not far from the shores of Lake Geneva).

Helena.

However, after assuming complete control of the business, the Schlatters began to buy critical areas of property that would later serve as important sources of grapes for their wines.

Helena, 38-acres in part of the Stanly Ranch in Carneros, and the 35 Lampyridae Vineyard on Mt.

Vineyard of the Lampyridae Photos of the Profile Estate Vineyard will be available shortly.

Stanly Ranch is a cattle ranch in the United States.

The Starmont wines are sourced in part from the historic Stanley Ranch in Napa’s Carneros area, with the emphasis of their production being on both widely marketed wines as well as limited-edition wines of exceptional quality.

Also available under a distinct brand, the Profile Collection, which includes two of their most premium wines: a Cabernet Sauvignon-based mix and a Chardonnay.

The reason they have a large number of tiny tanks is that they frequently pick their vineyards many times throughout the harvest season, fermenting each harvested block independently, and even fermenting certain rows from a vineyard block separately.

Wine and cheese pairings, an unique library wine tasting (including select older vintages), and a blending experience are among the other more private activities that may be reserved ahead of time.

It’s interesting to see this photo because these are the men who helped to establish and promote Napa’s wine industry following the devastation of Prohibition – at a time when Napa was not well-known and only a handful of wineries were in operation.

The Cask Room, which is available during normal business hours and well worth a visit, is one of the attractions of the property, aside from the history of the building and the wines it serves as a showcase.

With the use of lighted candles, large maturing barrels, and an outstanding table that runs down the center of the room, this space transports you back in time, maybe to the Middle Ages or even beyond.

Because this is a famous tourist destination, the tasting room may become quite packed, especially on weekends.

Private tours and tastings can be arranged in advance by calling the winery.

Merryvale has been making Chardonnay from the Hyde Vineyard in Carneros for many years (the first vintage we tried of this vineyard from Merryvale was 2005).

Larry Hyde is one of the most well-known grape farmers in Carneros – and, coincidentally, he is also a partner in Napa’s HDV Vineyards with Aubert de Villaine, who is also a co-owner of the legendary Domaine de la Romanee-Conti winery in Burgundy, among other accomplishments.

Exceptional citrus aromas and flavors, with nuances of lemon/lime and traces of hazelnut, characterize the 2014 Merryvale Hyde Vineyards Chardonnay’s bouquet.

With robust taste, yet with a freshness and obvious energy, especially on the finish, this wine is refreshing.

It was racked once throughout the maturing process and then bottled.

This is a really unusual Napa wine with a considerable historical and winemaking heritage that is difficult to find anywhere else.

The wine is always a non-vintage, made by the solera technique, in which the most recent release is made up of fractional mixes of past vintages and is finished with brandy.

Merryvale resurrected the production of this wine in 1992 and continued to do so until 1997, producing enough of it to have bottles on hand for sale in the tasting room and on the company website for several years after that.

Upon tasting the current release of Antigua, California Muscat Dessert Wine (which will be sampled in 2021), the wine has a medium brown hue that is visible through the transparent glass of the bottle’s distinctive design.

The aroma is rich, and simply by smelling it, one might feel ‘full’ with energy.

This fruit is sweet and delicious, and the acidity of the fruit perfectly balances these traits.

Located on the Napa side of Carneros, the Huichica Vineyard contributes to the Merryvale Late Harvest Riesling 2011.

Honey, dried apricot, dried orange peel, citronella, and brown sugar are among the aromatics included in this blend.

It has a lot of flavor, but it also has a nice cadence across the palate, so there are no sharp edges.

Flavors of candied fruit, ripe citrus, and baked pear may be found here.

The wine was matured in barrels for two years before being bottled, with new oak accounting for 15% of the total barrels used.

Switzerland was launched in 2021 as part of a relationship with a friend in Switzerland (this white wine is bottled under the Merryvale label).

As a result, Merryvale is now cultivating 650 vines of this type on their Carneros estate.

Would you believe that this smells more like California than Switzerland, despite the fact that it was created in Switzerland?!

The palate is slightly creamy, with flavors of grapefruit and lime, as well as a mouth-watering finish that leaves you wanting more.

After tasting this wine, my first thought was to serve it with oysters, preferably from Hog Island.

This was the very first wine that they ever made in their history.

In its youth, this wine is a powerful Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with gripping, long-lasting tannins — this wine has all the characteristics of a wine that will age well for many years.

The Merryvale Family of Wines includes the Starmont label, which is produced by the Merryvale Family of Wines.

The wines were available at the Starmont tasting room in Carneros for approximately 4 years, but after Merryvale sold the winery in 2019 (but not the Starmont label), the tasting room was closed as well.

On the Napa side of the Carneros appellation, Starmont Vineyards maintains approximately 40 acres of vines planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and a small amount of Viognier.

The first Stanly Ranch was established in 1856 by Edward Stanly, a San Francisco-based lawyer and businessman.

The land had been passed down through the generations before us.

The Stanly Ranch is now owned by the Stanly Family Foundation.

Their Starmont-produced wines are large-scale production, with the bulk of the grapes taken from farms in the Carneros region of California.

While the Merryvale wines are mostly Cabernet Sauvignon-based, the Starmont wines are composed of a diverse variety of varietals and are designed to be food-friendly, accessible wines when they are first made available.

The Starmont Viognier 2012 has scents of melon and apricot.

There is a clean and somewhat peppery aftertaste to this drink.

Fruity and citrusy aromas and flavors.

On the palate, there are flavors of lemon, lime, and red apple.

Aromatically, the 2012 Starmont Pinot Noir Carneros has spicy aromas reminiscent of white pepper – a trademark of the varietal.

On the taste, the spiciness from the fragrance is still there.

Fruit with a high tone, rather than a darker tone, is preferred.

The aroma is full-bodied, fruity, and energetic, and it reflects the vigorous finish on the palate as well.

That palate has a rounded appearance and is of modest build (more tannins than perhaps expected of a Pinot Noir).

The 2012 Starmont Syrah, Stanly Ranch Estate has to be one of the smallest or smallest production wines produced by Merryvale or Starmont, if not the lowest production wine.

In the glass, this wine appears to be black, and it was our favorite of the various wines we tested.

Aromatic notes that are bright and lively are detected on the nose.

With a plush tongue feel comes good acidity, which is something that is not typically connected with a pleasant mouth feel.

This is a very well-balanced wine, especially considering its youth.— In 2018, Merryvale transformed a portion of their grounds into an outdoor tasting facility with a view of the surrounding countryside.

And, of course, take pleasure in Merryvale wines.

MERRYVALE VINEYARDS: A working winery in St. Helena attracts out-of-town visitors

When it comes to Wine Country’s rich heritage, Merryvale Vineyards & Winery, located on the southern end of St. Helena’s appellation, radiates the patina of a winery that is maturing as elegantly in the terrain as its greatest wines are maturing in rotund barrels. Merryvale has only been alive for 23 years. However, that is merely the date that the winery was given its current name, not when it first opened its doors. The structure was nearly half a century old, having been constructed as the first winery in the Napa Valley following the lifting of Prohibition in 1933.

  • Helena Winery was the name of the establishment before it became Merryvale.
  • For out-of-town tourists who need to stay close to a number of outstanding restaurants – Tra Vigne and Martini House – as well as St.
  • Guests may sample wines and purchase from a range of clothes, ceramics, gourmet foods and artwork while being surrounded by the scents and views of a real vineyard, since the barrel chambers are open to the tasting area.
  • Magnum is a large black canine that belongs to the owner’s family.
  • The use of natural wood throughout the interior, as well as well-designed display racks and tables, contribute to a rustic yet elegant atmosphere.
  • The members of the team are as follows: Since 1996, Jack Schlatter has operated as a sole proprietorship business.
  • Helena and works at the winery on a daily basis.

In addition to Sean Foster, who has been with Merryvale for 14 years, the vineyard has a new winemaking team that includes Larry Cherubino, an international winemaker who splits his time between his native Australia, the Napa Valley, and other international wine sites, as well as other winemakers.

  • The wines are as follows: Merryvale makes 75 different wines under a variety of brands.
  • Both the 2005 Juliana Vineyards Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc ($22), a silky mix of 85 percent Sauvignon Blanc and 15 percent Semillon, and the 2003 Hyde Vineyard Carneros Chardonnay ($45) were excellent choices for the occasion.
  • The cost of this tasting was $7.00 per person.
  • The most expensive tasting is a vertical four-year taste of Bordeaux-style reds, which costs $20 per person.
  • They performed admirably in both situations, providing both facts and opinions.
  • My questions concerning the items and paintings on exhibit were answered without a sales pitch, and the knowledge was provided without prompting.

Rather than the standard T-shirt, baseball cap, and coaster assortment found at some wineries, the merchandise on offer is far more interesting, with a strong emphasis on locally produced goods, whether they be artwork or interesting food items such as Tulocay Napa Valley marinades or Round Pond olive oil.

Helena Highway, on the edge of town, the winery is close to dozens of other wine destinations in St.

Helena, including Prager Winery and Port Works (1281 Lewelling Lane, 707-963-7678 or 800-969-7678), which also operates a bed and breakfast; Sutter Home (277 St. Helena Highway, 707-963-3104); Beringer, the valley’s oldest continuously operating winery (2000 Main (1142 Main St., 707-967-1042).
