Considering a sloppy bun to be one of life’s great ironies, consider the following: When it comes to beauty, the looks that are the most undone generally need the most work. As a result of our efforts to create the perfect “I woke up like this” messy bun, we’ve ended up with hairstyles that are either too sloppy and deflated, too ballerina-tight, or simply incorrect all together. How To Make A Bun – Easy Step by Step Tutorial – Your Daily Dance
For the majority of dance parents, there comes a period in their daughter’s dancing career when they will tie her hair up in a bun. It may be a choice for recital, a necessity for a class, or a performance, or she may just enjoy the way it looks – like an official ballerina and prefer her hair be up. When I remember back to when I attempted to make a bun out of my dancer’s hair when she was younger, I have to giggle. While a bun was not required for the performance, I like the appearance and would attempt to give the impression that she had much more hair and, consequently, a much bigger bun than she actually had by styling her hair in a bun.
I was happy, but unless I wanted her thin hair to look like the size of a donut hole on top of her head, we needed some aid.
As I began researching how to build a bun, I found onto the right solution for us — the hair doughnut.
Check out how we include the hair donut below to build a bun that works easy for dancing class, school or any performance. The lesson below may also be useful for dancers with thicker hair who do not need to use a bun doughnut but still want to look stylish.
How To Make A Braided Bun – Quick Tutorial
What we used were the following products: a hair donut (donut brush), a comb (comb), gel (gel), clear elastic hairbands, hair pins, and Bobby pins
Step 1: Add Gel To Hair:
This is a new gel for us, and we were excited to give it a try. Would love to know if you have a favorite styling gel that you use to keep your hair up. In the aftermath of this, we were going out to dinner, and she did not want her hair to be slicked down in the way that we would normally do for a performance or dance competition. When it comes to flyaways, I prefer to apply gel more thickly to the front, sides, and below the hair in the back to help avoid them.
Step 2: Put Hair Up Into Ponytail
Hair should be pulled back into a ponytail depending on the sort of bun you want. A high ponytail is required for a high bun, a bun that is straight back is required for a straight back bun, and a low bun is required for a low bun. Because my dancer favors a high bun, we will be showcasing it in this tutorial. I use transparent elastic bands that I purchased from Sally’s Beauty Supply to hold her ponytail in place. Even though they are affordable and durable, I just use them once and then throw them at the end of each day during competition season.
Step 3:Pull Ponytail Through Hair Donut
The ponytail should be able to slide up through the middle of the hole in the hairdonut.
Step 4:Let Hair Fall and Cover Hair Donut
Adjust the angle of your dancer’s head forward and draw the ponytail straight up, allowing the hair to fall over the doughnut and cover it completely on all sides. When purchasing a hair donut, be sure to get one that is as near to the color of your dancer’s hair as possible so that it will integrate seamlessly even if it is not totally covered.
Step 5:Cover The Hair and Donut with an Elastic Hair Band
If you like, you may use a conventional hairband instead of the transparent elastics that we use for this. Once the elastic is in place, I pull the excess hair down to assess how much hair I have to pin around the bun before pinning it. I take little strands of hair and twist, wrap, and bind them with bobby pins around the bun to make it seem more polished. For class, we just spray our hair with hairspray and style it in this manner, adding gel to the sides if required. When performing or competing in dance competitions, we dress our dancers with a hair net and hairpins.
Step 6:Cover With a Hair Net
When I’m done, I wrap the leftover netting around the bun and fasten the end with bobby pins to keep everything in place.
Step 7:Add Hairpins to Secure the Bun
Hairpins should be inserted into the hair and secured with a doughnut. On most occasions, I enter the pin in a downward motion and then raise it back up again. This method appears to be more effective than simply inserting the hairpin straight into the bun.
The Finished Product – Spray with hairspray and your dancer will be performance ready!

On the days when you don’t feel like pulling out your curling iron or straightening iron, simply refer to this list for inspiration. Continue reading for a step-by-step approach to successfully pulling off buns for short hair.

45: High Bun for Thick Hair
Another option for keeping your bun atop your head at a high level is to make it particularly thick. Because the real bun is the main attraction, there is no need for any other ingredients to detract from it. Dutch Half Buns
In the event that you’ve taken the plunge and chosen a haircut that falls anywhere above your collarbones, you’ll be well aware that the traditional messy top knot is no longer a viable option. Instead, style your second-day texture into two half-buns that are twisted at the crown of your head to add dimension. Do you have a desire to succeed? Each bun should be started with a Dutch braid that begins at the hairline, crossing your sections under rather than over to achieve the coveted inside-out effect that distinguishes this braiding style.
Spritz the bottom half of your hair with sea salt or a texturizing spray, such as RedkenTriple Dry 15 Dry Texture Finishing Spray, to give it more body after you’ve finished styling it.
Rainbow Space Buns
Hair that is fine and smooth might be difficult to style. Keeping a style brush and a container of hairspray within easy reach in case of an emergency is necessary if you’re planning to put double buns to work in your everyday life. We adore this space bun look because it accentuates both the texture of the hair and the bright rainbow hue that stands out against the background. To personalize this appearance, create a clean part down the back of the head using your fingers. Using your fingers, draw each side of your hair up into a ponytail, making sure there are no lumps—if you’re having difficulties attaining a smooth finish, try tilting your head up while pulling the hair up into a ponytail.

Messy Half Buns
We all have varied abilities in life, but some of us are completely unable of achieving a professional-looking finish on our hair. Every time we tuck or pin anything, stray parts always seem to push their way back out. Rest assured, there’s a two-bun hairstyle for everyone, even those with the shakiest of hands: untidy half buns. To get this look, separate your hair horizontally right above the ears and style it as desired. Create a neat vertical part from your hairline to the end of the portion starting at the top of your head.
Even if you use a volumizing or texturizing spray at the roots of your hair before style, you may not get the desired artistic texture.
Festival Buns
It doesn’t matter if you’ve secured tickets to a music festival or not; you have every right to experiment with more braided, boho styles throughout the spring and early summer months. Try these lavender festival buns on any hair color or texture for a fun hairstyling challenge for the ladies in your life. Make a center part in your hair and clip one side out of the way with a clip to get things started. Start at your neck and work your way up, stopping only to knot off the ponytail when you reach the crown.
To style the opposite side, repeat the steps above, but instead of twisting the ponytails, wrap them around the base of each one and pin the look in place.
You’re prepared for a festival, no matter what your real plans are for the weekend.
Twisted Double Buns
There are just a few style techniques available that will get your hair out of your face quickly while also not making you appear distinctively unshowered. A twisted double bun style is one of the most popular. Whether you slept on your wet hair and now have a bizarre kink you need to cover, or you haven’t had time to shampoo, this chignon-like method can disguise any flaws in your hair. To begin, gently treat your hair with dry shampoo or a texturizing spray to give it a little extra hold. Divide your mane into two portions with your fingertips (no one will be able to tell the difference).
Once your hair has been twisted, begin shaping a bun using the bottom third of the portion you have pulled into the twist.
For a more organic look, loosen parts around the hairline and ears using your fingers.
Messy Bun with Velvet Scrunchie

A small spritz of hairspray can help to keep your style in place. @tanglezhairstudionz is having a good hair day.
Half Up Messy Bun
Lobsters, bobs, and short chops are more popular now than they have been in years. When your hair is on the shorter side, though, pulling off a full-on messy bun might be difficult to pull off. The appearance of a half-up messy bun is perfect for folks with short hair. @naledimogadime and @pekelariley are having a good hair day.

Low Messy Bun
Using a boar bristle brush, work your way through your strands. Pull all of your hair to the back of your head with your fingers, and tie it into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck. Make a bun by twirling the loose hair from the ponytail around the base of the ponytail and tying it together. Using your fingers, gently tug on a few sections of hair from the bun to give it a messier appearance. A couple spritzes of hairspray can bring your low bun to a successful conclusion.
