With this Shepherd’s Pie recipe, I found myself going back for more!
Shepherd’s Pie is a meat pie cooked with ground lamb and vegetables that is covered with a potato crust in the traditional manner. Technically, this dish is referred to as “Cottage Pie” since it is prepared using beef, which is more readily available at my local grocery shop. Both varieties are equally delectable and form a fantastic casserole dish. The traditional Shepherd’s Pie does not include cheese on top, but I like cheese on just about everything, especially my potatoes, so I use it instead.
I first published this Shepherd’s Pie recipe back in 2012, so it was lovely to have the opportunity to re-shoot the images for it.
However, if you’re just looking for a nice ground beef meal, this recipe is perfect for you!
Several of our favorite recipes are myEasy Skillet Lasagna, Cheap Korean Beef, and Slow Cooker Meatloaf.
- 1-pound of beef
- 1-cup carrots, cut or diced
- 1/2 white onion, chopped (approximately 1 cup)
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 cup water
- 1-tablespoon dried thyme
- 2-tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1-cup beef broth
- 1-tablespoon cornstarch
- 1-cup frozen peas
- Season with salt and pepper to taste
- 4 big russet potatoes, peeled and diced (about 2 pounds or 3-4 cups diced)
- 1 teaspoon salt (for boiling water)
- 3-4 cups sliced bacon
- 1/4 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2-3 chopped garlic cloves
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the potatoes in a large saucepan with enough water to cover them completely. 1 teaspoon of salt should be added. Cook, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes, or until the vegetables are fork tender. (The amount of time it takes to cook the potatoes will vary depending on their size.)
- Remove the water from the tank. Potatoes should be mashed. (I prefer to use a potato ricer for this purpose.) To make the sauce, combine the milk, butter, garlic, salt, and pepper to taste. Make a mental note to put it away. (Be sure to stay warm.)
- Meanwhile, cook the beef with the carrots and onion in a big pan, breaking up the meat with a spoon, while the potatoes are boiling. Remove the fat from the meat mixture and return it to the pan. Toss the garlic, thyme, and Worcestershire sauce into the pan of meat and cook until fragrant. Cook for 1 minute while stirring constantly. Combine the beef broth and cornstarch in a mixing bowl. Add the ingredients to the skillet. Simmer for 3-5 minutes, or until the liquid has reduced and thickened a little. Remove the pan from the heat after adding the peas and stirring well. If you are not using a square baking dish, pour the meat mixture into an oven-safe pan. A 2 1/2-quart casserole dish was used for this recipe. Optional: use a fork to form little peaks or a beautiful design on the top of the mashed potatoes to finish off the dish with the meat mixture. Add the cheese before baking for a crispier crust, or 5-10 minutes before baking for a softer, melted cheese
- Bake for 25-30 minutes at 425 degrees Fahrenheit, or until the liquid is bubbling and the top is golden.

Hearty and comforting Cottage Pie
One of the most fulfilling, warm, and delightfully hearty dinners you can prepare at home is savory cottage pie. This classic dish combines tender beef, a rich savory gravy, and fluffy mashed potatoes to create a comforting meal. The recipe for cottage pie has been in our family for years, and we never seem to get tired of it. Once a month, we invite our adult children and their families to join us for a family supper. This is the type of Sunday lunch that everyone enjoys eating.
What’s the difference between Cottage Pie and Shepherd’s Pie?
A Shepherd’s Pie is a variation on the traditional cottage pie that uses ground lamb in place of the beef. With the exception of that minor variation, the components are normally the same. There are a zillion variants to the recipe depending on where you reside, as there are with many classic foods that are recognized over the world. The majority of recipes, on the other hand, incorporate ground beef, onions, and potatoes. Corn and peas are included in certain recipes, while celery and mushrooms are also included in others.
We occasionally add all of those veggies in our cottage pie, and it turns out quite well. In this dish, we’ve used only the most basic ingredients: onions, potatoes, peas, and carrots, to name a few.
Which is better: Shepherd’s Pie or Cottage Pie?
While traveling around Ireland, Iceland, Europe, and Australia, we came across a number of excellent lamb dishes. Try this recipe for Lamb Pasties for a true Scottish delicacy that is oh-so-delicious! When it comes to cooking at home, my husband and I are big fans of lamb and never hesitate to incorporate it into dishes like as our kebabs, meatballs, and souvlaki. Over the last several years, ground lamb has grown increasingly popular in the United States, and it is now much simpler to come by in grocery shops.
It is delicious and easy to prepare.
Where does Cottage Pie come from?
Cottage pie was initially used in Europe in the late 1700s and is still in use today. Shepherd’s pie became popular in Britain and Ireland in the mid-1800s, but only when it was used to refer to a savory pie prepared with lamb, which is what it is today. This recipe, which was originally designed as a method to use up leftover meat and potatoes, has evolved into a popular main course all over the world. Cottage pie is also referred to as “pub food” since it is served in a pub setting.
Here are some tips for making the best Cottage Pie:
- Don’t forget to complete the first step! The addition of a small amount of baking soda to the ground beef enables it to remain soft rather than chewy and rough. Because of that fantastic advice from America’s Test Kitchen, some cottage pies can be watery and nearly soup-like in consistency. To avoid this, we begin by using lean ground beef as a base. As the fatty meat cooks, it releases more fluid, which might dilute the consistency of your gravy. Make sure to use beef that is at least 90 percent lean when preparing the mashed potatoes. We recommend using a hand potato masher for preparing the mashed potatoes as well. The use of an electric mixer results in gummy mashed potatoes. 2 cups of beef broth are required for this dish. If you like less gravy, you may reduce the amount of broth to 1 or 1-1/2 cups instead of 2. Cottage pie can be baked in the same pan in which the meat was cooked, or it can be moved to a casserole dish before baking. If you’re using a casserole dish, make sure it’s broiler-safe
- Otherwise, you may skip the broiling and simply bake until the mixture is bubbling. Without the use of a broiler, the potatoes will brown somewhat
- For an easy shortcut, use excellent quality, pre-made, store-bought mashed potatoes. Before piping the egg yolk on top of the steak, whisk together the ingredients. The addition of an egg yolk to the potatoes aids in the creation of a lovely golden brown color. That fantastic advice came from another of my go-to sources for all things cooking and baking: Cook’s Country is a region in the United States where people live and work in the kitchen. It is strongly advised that you spread the mashed potatoes on top of the dish. If the potatoes are spooned or dolloped into the meat, they tend to clump together and sink into the meat, rather than spreading evenly
- I’ve also had wonderful success adding white cheddar cheese to the mashed potatoes and/or topping the casserole with shredded cheese at the end. Potatoes stuffed with cheese. delicious
Can this Cottage Pie recipe be made ahead or frozen?
- It is possible to prepare the beef combination ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator. While cooking the mashed potatoes, let the meat to come to room temperature before cutting it. Bake and broil according to package directions. Leftover cottage pie may be re-heated gently in the microwave
- We often freeze leftover cottage pie in individual servings to use as a fast evening meal or a filling lunch on busy days. Thaw the frozen cottage pie in the refrigerator overnight before reheating in the microwave.

For the beef mixture:
- 14 teaspoon ground pepper
- 2 pounds lean ground beef (not less than 90 percent)
- 12 teaspoon baking soda
- 12 teaspoon salt
For the mashed potatoes:
- 3 pounds boiled potatoes, peeled and chopped into 1-inch chunks
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided into little bits (3-ounces or 85g)
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1 big egg yolk
- A tablespoon of butter, a tablespoon of olive oil, a large onion, chopped, three medium carrots, diced, a quarter teaspoon of salt, a quarter teaspoon pepper, a quarter teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional), two cloves garlic, minced, three tablespoons tomato paste
- Two tablespoons all-purpose flour
- Two tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- A tablespoon of butter
- A tablespoon of olive oil
- A tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
- One 15-ounce can low-sodium beef broth (you may use less stock if you want a dryer casserole)
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves, or 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch, combined with 1 tablespoon water
- 12 cups fresh or frozen green peas
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
To prepare the beef:
- In a medium-sized mixing basin, combine the ground beef and the remaining ingredients. In a small cup, whisk together the baking soda, 2 tablespoons water, 12 teaspoon salt, and 14 teaspoon pepper until well combined. Stir until the mixture is completely dissolved. Toss the ground beef with the baking soda mixture until everything is well-combined. Keep the potatoes at room temperature for 20 minutes while you prepare the rest of the meal.
To prepare the potatoes:
- Place the potatoes in a big saucepan and fill with cold water until they are thoroughly submerged. 1 teaspoon of salt should be added. Bring the potatoes to a boil over high heat, stirring often. Reducing the heat to medium and continuing to cook until the potatoes are tender (approximately 10-12 minutes), draining the potatoes entirely until absolutely dry Using a potato masher, return the potatoes to the saucepan and mash until there are no lumps left. Combine the butter, 14 teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon pepper in a mixing bowl. Stir constantly until the butter is completely melted. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and egg yolk. Toss the ingredients into the potatoes until everything is well-combined. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside
To prepare the filling:
- 1 tablespoon butter and 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large oven/broiler-proof skillet (at least 12-inches wide) over medium-high heat until melted and well combined. Heat on a medium heat until the butter has completely melted. Toss in the onions, carrots, 12 teaspoon salt, 14 teaspoon pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes, if using, and cook until the vegetables are tender. Keep stirring until the carrots are starting to soften, about 10 minutes. Stir frequently for approximately 2 minutes, or until the mixture darkens and the garlic is aromatic, until the mixture is thick and fragrant. Combine the flour and veggies by sprinkling it over them and stirring well. Cook for approximately 2 minutes, stirring regularly, scraping up any browned fond that has accumulated on the bottom of the skillet. Combine the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme in a large mixing bowl. Stir occasionally to remove any browned pieces from the bottom of the pan. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and add the beef in tiny chunks on top of the veggies (do not stir). Simmer for 12-15 minutes, stirring halfway through to break up any large clumps of meat, or until the beef is cooked through. Whisk together the cornstarch and 1 tablespoon water in a small bowl and whisk into the beef mixture. Cook for 1 minute, or until the sauce has thickened somewhat. Remove the pan from the heat after stirring in the peas. In a large zipper or pipping bag, combine the mashed potatoes with the remaining ingredients and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Remove the potatoes from the bag by cutting a 1-inch hole in one corner and piping them over the meat mixture. Smooth the potatoes over the steak to coat it completely. To create ornamental ridges in the potatoes, drag the tines of a fork across the surface of the potatoes. Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the filling is bubbling around the edges of the pan. Bake for 5 minutes under the broiler, with the oven door propped open a little, until the potatoes are golden brown and crusty, about 5 minutes total. (Be cautious not to overcook them or they may burn!) Allow 10 to 15 minutes of cooling time before serving.
- Recipes from Food Network and Cook’s Country served as inspiration. The beef combination can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator. Allowing the steak to come to room temperature while cooking the mashed potatoes can save you time. Bake and broil according to package directions. When making the mashed potatoes, we recommend using a potato masher. The use of an electric mixer will result in gummy mashed potatoes. In this recipe, we use 2 cups of beef broth as the base. To make a drier casserole with less gravy, use 1 to 1 1/2 cups stock for the water. More juice will be produced by fattier meat, which will have an impact on the amount of gravy in this dish. It is recommended that you use lean ground beef with a high fat content and reduce the amount of beef broth to 1 cup. This dish may be baked in the same pan that was used to cook the beef, or it can be moved to a casserole dish and cooked there. In order to bake successfully, your casserole dish must be broiler-safe. You may skip the broiling stage if you don’t have a broiler-safe pan, and simply bake until the top is bubbly and golden. If you want to save time, use pre-made, store-bought mashed potatoes blended with 1 egg yolk
- Pipping mashed potatoes on top is advised as an option. When spooned on top of the meat mixture, the potatoes tend to clump and sink, rather than spreading evenly as they would if baked.

My recipe calls for lamb because it is a traditional one. If lamb isn’t available, I’ve also used the meatloaf mix from the grocery store, which is a combination of beef, veal, and pork. I enjoy the variety of flavors and textures that every beef has to offer. Carrots and onions are ground up in my recipe and cooked together with the meat. Afterwards, I pile the meat on top of the sauce, then the corn, and finally the mashed potatoes. Because we don’t care for peas, I exclude them from the recipe.

For the potatoes:
- 2 tablespoons canola oil
- 1 cup finely chopped onion
- 2 carrots, peeled and diced tiny
- 2 cloves minced garlic
- 2 cups water
- 1.5 pounds ground lamb
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons tomato paste
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons freshly chopped rosemary leaves
- 1 teaspoon freshly chopped thyme leaves
- 1/2 cup fresh or frozen corn kernels
- 1/2 cup fresh or frozen English peas
- 1 teaspoon freshly chopped rosemary leaves
Peel and divide the potatoes into 1/2-inch cubes once they have been peeled. Fill a medium saucepan halfway with cold water and set aside. Set the pan over high heat, cover it, and bring it to a rolling boil. Cover and cook until the vegetables are soft and readily mashed with tongs, usually 10 to 15 minutes after the water has been brought to a boil. Place the half-and-half and butter in a microwave-safe container and cook on high for 35 seconds, or until the mixture is well warmed. Using a colander, drain the potatoes and then add them back to the saucepan.
- Stir in the yolk until it is completely incorporated.
- Preparing the filling may be done while the potatoes are cooking.
- As soon as the oil begins to shimmer, add the onion and carrots and sauté just until the vegetables begin to turn a light golden color, about 3 to 4 minutes.
- Cook for approximately 3 minutes, or until the lamb is browned and cooked through.
- Cook for another minute after sprinkling the meat with the flour and tossing it to coat it.
- Bring the sauce to a boil, then decrease the heat to low, cover, and cook for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened a little bit more.
- Fill in around the sides of the pan with mashed potatoes to form a seal that will prevent the contents from bubbling up.
- Place the potatoes on a half sheet pan coated with parchment paper and bake for 25 minutes, or until the potatoes are just beginning to brown.
Notes from Renee: I processed the carrots and onions in a food processor until they were finely chopped, then combined them with the meat in a skillet. I also increased the amount of corn and left out the peas because we don’t like for them.
Maple “Shepherd’s Pie” Dessert
- 1-1/2-cups maple syrup
- 1/4-cupcocoa powder
- 2 cups plain bran cereal (such as All-Bran)
- 2 mangoes, cubed
- 2 cups Mediterranean style plain yogurt
- Maple sugar (for decorating)
- 2 cups mangoes, cubed
- Pour maple syrup into a saucepan and stir in cocoa until well combined. Cook for 1 minute over medium heat, stirring constantly. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the cereal. Prepare “shepherd’s pie” in four separate glass dishes (dessert bowls, tiny Mason jars, or other), preferably wider than higher, by layering the following ingredients in succession: cereal mixture for meat, mango cubes for corn, and yogurt for mashed potato. Serve with a sprinkle of maple sugar on top.

Dessert Shepherd’s Pie
Please keep in mind that these instructions were created with the usual serving size in mind; therefore, if you have changed the number of servings, some of these procedures may need to be adjusted for the best results.
- If you have an Instant Pot, simply put the potatoes and water in it and press “start.” Cook for 10 minutes on the manual setting after securing the lid and turning the valve to the sealing position. Allow the pressure to naturally dissipate. For those who don’t have access to an Instant Saucepan, simply place the potatoes in a pot with enough water to cover them on the stovetop and bring to a boil until fork tender
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the potatoes are finished boiling and the pressure has been released completely, drain the water and return the potatoes to the pot. Using a fork or potato masher, mash the potatoes together with one tablespoon of coconut oil and 1/4 cup of almond milk until they are smooth. Continue mashing the potatoes until they are smooth, then put them aside. Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of coconut oil in a pan over medium-low heat, stirring constantly. Combine the apples and the 2 cups of chopped pecans in a large mixing bowl. Continually stir to cover everything with oil and simmer until the apples are mushy, approximately 10 minutes
- In the meantime, mix together 1/4 cup maple syrup, 1/2 teaspoon of the cinnamon, allspice, and cloves, and 1/4 teaspoon of the salt. When the apple/pecan combination is finished simmering, add this and combine well before transferring to a pie plate. Bake for approximately 40 minutes, or until the top is gently browned, until the sweet potato is lightly browned on top (I like to use a fork to make patterns on the top of mine). While the pie is baking, begin making the candied pecans (they’re pretty simple!) Warm the pecan halves in a pan over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until they are slightly toasted and aromatic, approximately 10 minutes. This does make a difference in the flavor and texture of the finished product, but if you’re impatient, you may forgo heating the pecans altogether. While the nuts are toasting, whisk together the remaining 1/4 cup maple syrup and 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon in a small mixing bowl. Once the nuts are aromatic, add this and leave to simmer down for a few minutes, stirring occasionally to avoid the sauce from being burnt. Allow this to simmer down until the maple syrup begins to resemble granulated sugar, around 30 to 40 minutes. It should take between 10 and 15 minutes to complete this task. Remove off the heat and set aside until it is safe to touch
- The candied pecans should be placed on top of the pie after it is ready. In my pie, I made a basic pattern with the pecans and opted to keep some for snacking later, but you may use as many as you like. Serve while the food is still warm.
The filling, sweet potato topping, and candied pecans may all be made ahead of time if you’re cooking this for Thanksgiving. Refrigerate the filling and sweet potato topping until you’re ready to assemble and bake the dessert, which should take around 40 minutes before you’re ready to serve it.
