Cherry Dump Cake (+Video)
Cherry Dump Cake is a simple dessert that can be created with cake mix, cherry pie filling, butter, and a special hidden ingredient. “Dump” the ingredients and bake!
CAKE MIX, PIE FILLING AND BUTTER
When it comes to fruit sweets, one of my go-to recipes is the modest dump cake, which is quick and easy to make. It’s a bad name, but the concept behind it is that you “dump” everything in and bake it until it’s done. The added perk of this cherry dump cake dessert is that you may use any type of pie filling you choose! Each and every one of them has worked flawlessly in my experience.
Frequently asked questions:
Is it possible to make dump cake in a slow cooker? Yes! This may also be done in a crock pot on low heat. Cook on low for 4 hours or on high for 2 hours, depending on your preference. Is it okay to use any flavor of pie filling? Cherry is one of my favorite fruits. Not only does it have the right sweet/tart flavor combo, but it also looks lovely! Making this dish during the holidays is very enjoyable because of the brilliant red hue. However, you may substitute whatever flavoring you choose for the cherry, like peach, strawberry, blueberry, apple, and so on and so forth.
- What if I don’t want it to be quite as sweet as it is?
- You could absolutely do that, but I feel that the straight-up cherry with a dash of almond extract is the best way for me to enjoy the flavor.
- The flavors of almond and cherries are a fantastic pairing.
- For an extra crunch, consider scattering some sliced almonds or chopped nuts on top or under the cake batter before baking it for an extra layer of flavor.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (FULL RECIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST)
- Yellow cake mix, cherry pie filling, almond essence, and salted butter are the ingredients.
HOW TO MAKE CHERRY DUMP CAKE:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Nonstick cooking spray should be sprayed onto a 9×13 baking dish. 12 teaspoon almond extract should be added to each can of pie filling and stirred well. Pour both cans of cherry pie filling into the baking dish that has been prepped. Sprinkle the yellow cake mix over the cherry pie filling in an equal layer. Pour the melted butter over the top of the cake mix in a slow, steady stream. Note: Rather than melting the butter and dumping it on top of the cake mix, you might slice it into squares and equally distribute them all over the top of the cake mix.
It won’t be enough to cover the entire cake mix.
An ice cream cone on top is usually a great touch, as well.

- 1.75 box yellow cake mix
- 2.25 cans cherry pie filling
- 1 teaspoon almond essence, divided usage
- 12.25 cups salted butter (1 stick), melted
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Nonstick cooking spray should be sprayed onto a 9″x 13″ baking dish. To save time, you might alternatively slice the butter into squares and then equally distribute them over the top of the cake mix, rather than melting the butter and pouring it on top of the cake. Preparation time: 50-60 minutes (or until the topping is golden brown).
- This may also be done in a crock pot on low heat. Cook on low for 4 hours or on high for 2 hours
- You may substitute whatever flavoring you choose for the cherry, including peach, strawberry, blueberry, apple, and so on. Whatever you enjoy
- Some people like to increase the acidity of this dish by adding pineapple. You could absolutely do that, but I feel that the straight-up cherry with a dash of almond extract is the best way for me to enjoy the flavor. This recipe has a small twist thanks to my addition. It is impossible to have a good time with cherries and almond taste. Adding sliced almonds to the top of the cake batter before baking will give it a crunch that will be hard to resist. As an alternative to melting the butter, you may chop it into little squares and distribute them equally on top of the cake mix layer.

Cherry Dump Cake
July 20, 2020/ByBeth @ The First Year/ Cherry dump cake may be made with a can of cherry pie filling and a box of yellow cake mix. It has the same flavor as handmade cherry cobbler, but it is much easier to make! This dump cake with cherries may be made without the need of a mixer or any extra dishes.
What is Dump Cake?
Adump cake is well-known for its simplicity, as the ingredients are simply poured into the cake pan. The majority of dump cakes are baked in 9×13-inch pans. The majority of dump cakes are made using canned, frozen, or fresh fruit, as well as canned pumpkin. In order to make dump cakes, a box of dry cake mix is spread over the ingredients in a baking pan, and then melted butter is poured on top of the cake mix to finish it off. It’s almost miraculous what takes place inside the oven. “Is this really going to work?” I wondered aloud.
It’s not the kind of cake that you cut into precise pieces; instead, you scoop it onto your plate and dig in!
Ingredients
- Cherry pie filling, yellow cake mix, unsalted butter, almond extract or vanilla extract are some of the ingredients.
How to Make Cherry Dump Cake
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Nonstick cooking spray should be sprayed onto a 9×13-inch baking pan. Make a well in the bottom of the pan and pour in the cherry pie filling. Sprinkle the dry cake mix over the cherries in an equal layer. Combine the almond essence and the melted butter in a small bowl. Drizzle the melted butter over the dry cake in a uniform layer
- Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
How Do You Know When a Dump Cake is Done Baking?
The toothpick method will not work for a cherry dump cake recipe, as it will not work for regular cakes. The top of the dump cake should be golden in color, and it should have the appearance and feel of a “crust.” However, once the crust is broken, the cake will be moist due to the presence of the fruit. As a rule of thumb, aim for a golden tint on the cake’s top before baking it.
Can Dump Cake Be Made Ahead of Time?
Because it resembles a cobbler, most people prefer a warm dump cake, which is served warm. Given this information, you may create a dump cake with cherry pie filling ahead of time, but I would not advocate making it more than one day ahead of time. In the oven, you may reheat the entire pan of food.
How to Store Dump Cake
Refrigerate with a lid on it for best results. It’s best if you consume it within 3-4 days.
Tips
- It is OK if the melted butter does not completely cover the cake mix. A box of gluten-free yellow cake mix was used in this recipe, and the results were excellent. A box of chocolate cake mix may be used to make a black forest dump cake. Using a smaller pan will need you to bake it for longer
- Nevertheless, this is not a problem.

Recipe Variation
- Blueberry pie filling should be substituted for the cherry pie filling. Apple or peach pie filling can be used, but the fruit should be chopped finely before being spooned over the batter. Bake according to package directions
- In this recipe, you can use a butter pecan, white cake, cherry chip, French vanilla, or any comparable cake mix. Make the cake using a chocolate or fudge cake mix if you want it to have a black forest taste. Before swirling the pie filling into the batter, sprinkle 1/4 to 1/2 cup of chopped nuts over the top of the pie filling.
This recipe has received a rating. This does not sit well with me. It’s hardly the worst case scenario. Yes, this will suffice. I’m a fan, and I’d suggest it. Amazing! It’s fantastic! Thank you for your feedback!

What is a cobbler?
Cobbler is a baked dish made out of a fruit or savory filling that is placed into a big baking dish and then coated with a batter, biscuit, or dumpling before being cooked at a high temperature. I used a cake mix, butter, and coats to make the batter for my rendition of the recipe.
What makes a cobbler different from a pie?
Crust, to put it simply. Pies are made with one or two crusts, whilst cobblers are made without any crusts. Cobblers have a “messier” appearance than other types of nails. There isn’t a neat and sharp edge here. Because of all of the tasty fruit, you may develop a bubbly edge. Does Cherry Cobbler Have to Be Refrigerated?
Because it is entirely canned, I don’t believe it is strictly necessary to keep it chilled, but we do keep ours in the refrigerator once we have finished eating it. There is no harm, no foul. Because it does not include any fresh cherries or dairy, I do not believe it would spoil on the counter top. You’ll also appreciate the following:

Because we would have devoured the entire pan if I hadn’t taken the rest to a party, I was fortunate. Please don’t call it a “dump cake,” even if you want to. It’s referred to as “Easy Cherry Cobbler.”
How to Make a Dump Cake
Prepare your casserole dish by greasing it. This recipe may be made in any pan that is roughly 9×13 inches, but if you have a little larger or smaller pan, or three loaf pans, or whatever, you can adapt it to work for you! Using a pastry blender, blend the almond extract into the canned cherry pie filling directly in the can. After that, pour the filling into your dish and smooth it out evenly on top. In order to finish, you’ll want to sprinkle the cake mix over the top and then pour over the melted butter.
Do you want to skip the “dump” portion of the recipe?
The reason for this is that I don’t mind having one dirty dish and I know that the butter has been distributed equally.
However, if you put a scoop of ice cream on top and taste it, you will fall in love with it!

This is a sweet and delectable cake recipe. Several years ago, the recipe was printed on the side of a package of cake mix. Unfortunately, I don’t recall what it was named back then. - (either) one (18 1/4ounce) box white cake mix or one (18 1/4ounce) box yellow cake mix
DIRECTIONS
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a 9x13x2″ cake pan by greasing and flouring the bottom and sides
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cake mix, eggs, water, and oil until thoroughly combined. Pour the batter into the cake pan that has been prepared. Spread evenly in the pan
- To decorate the cake batter, place spoonfuls of pie filling on top of the batter. Swirl the cherry pie filling into the cake batter with a knife
- Set aside. Take care not to let the knife come into contact with the bottom of the cake pan. This may cause some of the flour/shortening covering to be removed, resulting in the cake sticking to the pan. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the top of the cake is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean
- Cool completely before serving. Allow for a 10-minute cooling period. It is possible to serve it warm or chilled. It is possible to serve it with ice cream or whipped topping.

Making this dish is quite simple, since it only requires four ingredients to be completed! Here’s everything you’ll need to get started:
- Cherry pie filling from a can. I’m a great admirer of cherries, and the combination of cherries and almond extract is one of my favorites, but you may use any fruit filling you like. Apple pie filling with a spice cake topping seems like the ideal Thanksgiving dish. Extracts such as almond or vanilla are used. The use of this item is entirely optional, but we like the taste boost it provides to our dump-cake recipe

how to make a dump cake
This is where the name dump cake originates from — we’re going to pour all of the ingredients onto a baking dish! A basic synopsis of the procedure is provided here, but for complete details, please refer to the recipe card provided below this page.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and ready your baking dish. Take a moment to gather all of the components. It will be necessary to melt your butter. If you’re using almond (or vanilla) essence, mix half of a teaspoon into each can of cherry pie filling
- Otherwise, leave it out. Using a spatula, spread out the mixture in the baking dish so that it is evenly distributed. Cake mix should be sprinkled evenly over the cherry pie filling, then gently pour melted butter over the cake mix to ensure that it is equally coated with butter. Bake until the top is golden brown and the cherries are bubbling, about 30 minutes.
Remove from the oven and top with a generous dollop of whipped cream or, even better, a scoop of vanilla ice cream before serving.
