- 1Coat a 13×9-inch (3-quart) glass baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and set aside. Sugar and cinnamon should be combined in a big resealable food-storage plastic bag. - Cinnamon buns aren’t supposed to be picture-perfect.

- Allow the dough to rise for 1 – 1 12 hours in a warm position in your kitchen before placing it in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours and up to 12 hours. Once the dough has been allowed to cool, it will be much simpler to deal with. Refrigerating the dough overnight also aids in the development of the dough’s taste. If you are in a hurry, you may let the dough rise for 1 – 1 12 hours instead of the overnight chilling component. Roll out the dough into a broad rectangle until it is around 14 inches thick and measures approximately 16 inches by 12 inches. Don’t make the mistake of rolling out the dough too thin. A thicker dough will hold in the filling much better, making it much easier to roll and cut the cinnamon rolls once they have been baked. Having a little filling slip out when you’re rolling them is quite OK. Optional: Trim / cut the edges with a sharp knife or pizza cutter to ensure that they are perfectly straight. Making use of a tiny offset spatula, spread the softened butter evenly over the dough, going as close to the corners of the dough as possible. In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar and brown sugar, then sprinkle equally over the butter, gently pushing the sugar into the dough with your fingertips or a spatula to make sure it is well distributed. Place a layer of cooled apple pie filling on top of the sugars and butter. Prepare the Cream Cheese Icing as follows: In a medium-sized mixing basin, beat together the softened cream cheese and butter until well incorporated, either with an electric mixer or by hand. Whisk in the vanilla extract until it is well incorporated. Whisk in the powdered sugar until it is completely smooth. You may thin down too much frosting by adding a tablespoon or two of milk until it reaches the consistency that you want (I usually add in two tablespoons of milk). Spread the frosting on top of the cinnamon buns and serve while still warm.
- The best way to enjoy these rolls is to serve them warm the day they are cooked. If you store them in the fridge, they will last up to 3 days. Rolls may be refrigerated after their second rise for up to one month if kept at 350°F (177°F) for 5-10 minutes before serving. Okay, so apple pie cinnamon buns aren’t exactly a novel concept, but they are delicious nonetheless. However, these cinnamon buns, topped with a handmade apple pie filling and the most delectable brown butter cream cheese icing, are on another level entirely.
Once they’ve risen a second time, you’ll simply fold in a fast and easy homemade apple pie filling and they’ll be ready to bake!
Should you cook apple pie filling before baking?
When utilizing the homemade filling I’ve included below, the answer is yes! These cinnamon buns will be filled with a wonderful homemade apple pie filling, which is really simple to make! Several components, including apples, cornstarch, sugar, and spices, will be combined and cooked until the apples are soft and the mixture has thickened somewhat, as seen in the picture. - Cooking spray- put a little amount of cooking spray on your baking pan to prevent the rolls from adhering to it.

- Fruit- you’ll need the equivalent of around 2 apples for this recipe. Make sure to peel and cut them finely so that your filling will fit comfortably within these cinnamon buns. In our apple filling, lemon juice brings out the acidity of our apples while also balancing the sweetness of the filling. unsalted butter- we’ll use some unsalted butter to increase the richness of this filling
- Light brown sugar- we’ll use light brown sugar to perfectly sweeten our filling
- Granulated sugar- we’ll use granulated sugar to perfectly sweeten our filling
- Vanilla- once again, I like to use my own handmade vanilla extract, but if you must use storebought, make sure it is of high quality. If you don’t have apple pie spice, you may use pumpkin pie spice. sodium chloride
Finally, we’re going to make an incredible brown butter cream cheese glaze! Here’s everything you’ll need to get started:
- Unsalted butter should be chopped so that it may be heated and browned uniformly

I baked these cinnamon rolls in a 10-inch cast iron skillet, but you could also use a 9-by-9 baking pan or an 11-by-7 baking pan.

Cinnamon Roll Dough
- 214 teaspoon instant yeast (one packet
- 1 cup (237ml)warm buttermilk (approximately 110-115°F)
- 6 teaspoon (84g)unsalted butter (melted)
- 1 large egg (room temperature)
- 12 cup (110g)light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ( 6g)salt
- 2 12 cups (312 g)all-purpose flour (plus more as needed, up to 312 cups)

Brown Butter Cream Cheese Glaze
- 1 teaspoon (5 mL) pure vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon (1 g) salt-or to taste
- 4 teaspoon (20 mL) milk-or as needed for desired consistency
- 2 cups (240 g) powdered sugar
- 4 tablespoons (56 g) unsalted butter cubed
- 4 ounces (113 g) cream cheese softened
- 18 teaspoon (1 g) salt-or to taste
Prepare Apple Pie Filling
- In a medium saucepan, add all of the filling ingredients and whisk until well combined. 2 medium baking apples, 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice, 4 tablespoon unsalted butter, 3 1/4 cup light brown sugar, 12 teaspoon pure vanilla extract, 4 teaspoon apple pie spice, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, 14 teaspoon salt, 2 tablespoon water are the ingredients for this recipe. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until the cornstarch and spices are dissolved and the apples have released some of their juice
- Bring to a low boil. Cook, stirring periodically, for 10-15 minutes, or until the mixture is thick and the apples are soft. Take out of the oven and store in a heat-proof container in the refrigerator to cool
Prepare Cinnamon Roll Dough
- In a large mixing basin or the bowl of a stand mixer, whisk together the yeast and warm buttermilk until well combined. Set aside for 3 to 5 minutes, then stir again. A frothy mixture should form – if it does not, your yeast may be too old, or your buttermilk may have been served at too high a temperature. 1 cup buttermilk

- Combine the melted butter, brown sugar, egg, vanilla extract, and salt in a large mixing bowl, mixing well after each addition. 1 big egg, 12 cup light brown sugar, 1 teaspoon salt

- Add flour a bit at a time, stirring constantly, until the dough pulls away from the edges of the pan. Don’t add any more flour than is absolutely required since the dough should still be sticky and adhere to the bottom of the bowl. pure vanilla essence (about 1 teaspoon)
- Knead the dough for approximately 2-3 minutes on a floured surface (or in a stand mixer fitted with the hook attachment) until it is soft and smooth. Gently roll the dough into a ball

- Place the bowl in a warm area and cover with plastic wrap to allow the dough to rise for approximately 40 minutes, or until it has doubled in size
- Using a lightly floured surface or a nonstick pastry mat, roll out the dough to make a rectangle about 10 inches by 15 inches in size, with the long side closest to you. The dough should be 1 inch thick
- It should be rolled out. Distribute a thin layer of chilled apple pie filling on top of the dough and spread it evenly
- Using your hands, roll the dough away from you into a long roll, with the seam on the bottom side. When rolling the roll, carefully pull the edge of the dough around the roll to prevent the filling from squeezing out. Cut the dough into pieces that are evenly spaced, depending on the size of the pan: There are seven parts needed for a 10-inch cast-iron skillet, eight pieces for an 11×7″ pan, and nine pieces for a 9×9″ pan. Cut the pieces with a serrated knife or dental floss that has not been waxed for cleaner cuts
- Cooking spray should be sprayed onto a 9×9 baking pan, a 10-inch cast-iron skillet, or a 7×11 inch baking pan. 2-1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
- Carefully lay the rolls onto the skillet or baking pan that has been prepped. Cover with plastic wrap or a towel and leave to rise in a warm location until it has doubled in size again, around 40 minutes more time. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Rolls should be baked for 25-30 minutes, or until they are golden brown. Remove the rolls from the oven and set them aside for 5 minutes to cool.
Prepare Brown Butter Cream Cheese Frosting
- In a light-colored sauté pan, heat cubed butter over medium heat until melted. To make the milk solids separate, continue stirring until the milk solids have separated and the butter has begun to turn golden brown. Transfer the brown butter to a heat-proof bowl right away, scraping the brown bits out with a spatula. Remove from heat and bring to room temperature. Beat softened cream cheese and cooled brown butter with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy, approximately 2 minutes. Add in the vanilla extract and the salt to taste. 4 tablespoon unsalted butter,⅛ teaspoon salt,4 oz cream cheese
- Gradually add in powdered sugar, mixing on low, until combined. Beat another minute to a smooth and creamy consistency. Mix with milk to obtain desired consistency. pure vanilla essence (about 1 teaspoon)
- Spread or pour glaze over warm rolls and serve immediately
Making these cinnamon rolls overnight is my favorite method since it is so handy, and the gradual rise gives them such a gorgeous texture! Making these cinnamon buns with apple pie filling for breakfast the night before can be a good idea if you’re planning on eating them the next morning. To make your rolls rise overnight, first make sure you’re using a pan that isn’t made of cast iron – leaving your cast iron pan out overnight might cause harm to it, so use glass or another type of pan instead.
Simply set the rolls aside in a warm place overnight or until they have doubled in size in the morning, then bake them as usual.
Instead of using buttermilk, you may substitute whole milk, substituting one tablespoon of the milk with vinegar, if desired.
To make use of storebought apple pie filling, just use roughly 1 12 – 2 cups of storebought apple pie filling (cut apples into smaller pieces first) and whisk in 2 tablespoons melted butter, 12 cup light brown sugar, and 1 tablespoon apple pie spice until well combined.
